The Utah Hockey Club's inaugural season is in the books. Even though the team failed to qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs, SLC Puck host Austin Facer still feels the season was a tremendous success. It helped that the team lived up to the preseason expectations set by general manager Bill Armstrong, who stated his goal was to have the team playing "meaningful games" late in the season.
Finishing the year strong was captain Clayton Keller who turned in five points in Utah's final five games to reach 90 points on the season for the first time in his career. That, Facer says, in addition to his terrific play in the season's final month, was emblematic of why Keller received the 'C.'

The Utah Hockey Club made its inaugural season home finale a celebratory occasion, even with an overtime shootout loss to the Nashville Predators. After the game ended, the team awarded End of Year Honors to select players, including goaltender Karel Vejmelka, who was voted by his teammates as the team's Most Valuable Player.
SLC Puck host Austin Facer commends the Club for making the right call and naming "Veggie" the MVP. It's also been interesting to note that many players on this team have had career years, such as "All-In" Award winner Barrett Hayton. That, along with a feeling of gratitude for the team's new market, gives Facer optimism for Utah's future.
Utah continued to wrap up its season with a 50% off sale at the team store over the weekend. In addition to being an act of appreciation for the team's fanbase, Facer also views it as a signal that a new name and look may be on the way, very soon.

With an overtime victory by the Minnesota Wild over the San Jose Sharks on Wednesday night, the Utah Hockey Club was officially eliminated from the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Still, SLC Puck host Austin Facer is proud of the team's effort, playing in meaning games through 79 of the team's 82 regular season matchups.
Now, with the home finale on Thursday, Facer looks forward to an evening at the Delta Center that is sure to be memorable for fans and players alike. He predicts a feeling of immense gratitude in the air, as the Utah Hockey Club salutes its fans with a number of Fan Appreciation Activitations, including the team's first-ever End of Season Awards.

It’s time for Utah Hockey Club fans to start cheering for other teams. With the team on the brink of elimination from the playoffs, Utah not only needs to win out — the Club also needs some help from the opponents of Calgary, Minnesota and Vancouver. For example, as SLC Puck Austin Facer puts it, if Minnesota beats San Jose on Wednesday, Utah is effectively out of the postseason, regardless of how it plays out over the final five games.
With playoff hopes on its last breath, Facer believes the Club will rely heavily not only on goaltender Karel Vejmelka, who fans can expect to see in net as long as Utah has a fighting chance, but also on captain Clayton Keller, who surpassed 500 career points in the NHL in the win over Winnipeg on Saturday.
Keller’s mark, as impressive as it was, was just one of a few milestones in the NHL. The biggest, undoubtedly, was Washington forward Alex Ovechkin’s monumental achievement, becoming the NHL’s all-time leader in goals scored, a mark he reached on Sunday with the now-former record holder, Wayne Gretzky, in attendance.

The Utah Hockey Club may not know its a long shot to make the postseason. That, or the team just doesn’t care. A strong showing against the Calgary Flames on Tuesday was proof of that, along with comments from the locker room, including the quote “We’ll never quit,” by head coach André Tourigny. SLC Puck Austin Facer is encouraged by Utah’s determination, which will be test against two quality opponents this week; the Los Angeles Kings and Winnipeg Jets.
When LA comes to town on Thursday, it may be the last appearance on NHL ice for Utah’s most accomplished hockey export; Kings forward Trevor Lewis. The former Brighton High School star became Utah’s first-ever first round pick in the NHL draft in 2006 and went on to play more than 1,000 NHL games with the Kings, Flames and Jets.
Who will be Utah’s next first-round native? Who knows — chances are though, that player will get a big boost from an announcement that Ryan Smith made this week, supporting the construction of up to 20 new rinks around the state. Facer wonders where the rinks could go and which cities will benefit most from Smith Entertainment Group’s rink-building pledge.

Realistically speaking, the Utah Hockey Club is out of the playoff races. Thanks to a late surge by the red-hot St. Louis Blues and a pair of losses in the Sunshine State — an 8-0 smashing at the hands of Tampa Bay and a 2-1 overtime defeat to Florida — Utah is effectively eliminated from the postseason.
Still, as the team’s performance against Chicago on Sunday — a 5-2 road victory — showed, there are still plenty of things left for many players on the team to play for. Heading into the final stretch of home games in its inaugural season, SLC Puck Austin Facer is optimistic that the team will use this opportunity to reward its fans with some spirited performances. Not to mention, the remaining eight games, including the last five at the Delta Center, give several players an opportunity to audition for a role with the next season.
Facer doesn’t expect the team to phone it in anytime soon, even with the playoffs essentially out of reach.

Utah’s playoff dreams took another hit Monday night in a crushing loss to the Detroit Red Wings, pushing their postseason hopes closer to the brink. Now eight points behind the final wild card spot in the Western Conference, Utah will need near-perfect hockey down the stretch to keep its playoff chances alive.
The final stretch kicks off with a critical two-game swing through the Sunshine State, facing powerhouse Tampa Bay and the reigning Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers. After 14 consecutive starts — the longest streak in the NHL this season— SLC Puck host Austin Facer anticipates goaltender Karel Vejmelka will rest for at least one of these pivotal matchups.
Eleven games remain in Utah’s inaugural season. Facer says the team will have to play each one of these as if it was a Game 7 — and hopefully secure a point or two without “Veggie” in net.

The Utah Hockey Club bounced back in a big way this week. After a crushing 7-1 loss to Edmonton on Tuesday, Utah recovered to pick up four points in the standings with home wins over Buffalo and Tampa Bay. As SLC Puck host Austin Facer puts it, the key for the Club is to continue to play meaningful games as long as possible. That being said, Utah has some tough games ahead, with an upcoming road trip to play Tampa Bay and Florida looming.
Facer also relays some information he learned from an interview with Utah owner Ryan Smith and NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman on a recent NashCast broadcast, including the possible location of a future outdoor game in Utah.
That commentary on an announcement about the growth of youth hockey in Utah from Smith make up this episode of SLC Puck.

The Utah Hockey Club suffered its worst loss of the season on Tuesday night, a 7-1 defeat at the hands of the Edmonton Oilers. Realistically, Utah's chances of making the playoffs at this point shrink with every loss, requiring the team to play virtually mistake-free the rest of the way.
SLC Puck host Austin Facer, however, feels this season has already been a success regardless of how the standings look at the end of the regular season. Utah General Manager Bill Armstrong said at the beginning of the season the team's goal was to play meaningful games late in the year. As it stands now, the Club still is. It's just a matter of continuing to do that for as long as the team can.

March 17, 2025 Utah Plays A Mammoth Game Against Vancouver | SLC Puck! Ep. 91
The Utah Hockey Club played and won its biggest game of the season, a 3-1 road win over the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday night. Jockeying with Vancouver for the final wildcard spot in the Western Conference playoffs, Utah's win essentially saved its postseason chances. Needing a win to stay alive, the Club found a tremendous win thanks to a strong team outing.
SLC Puck host Austin Facer salutes Utah's effort, calling Sunday's win the most important of the season. However, to remain in the hunt for a postseason appearance, he cautions that Utah must remain focused and bring a similar effort to each of its remaining 15 games. Any let downs — including Friday's loss to Seattle, a team comfortably out of the playoff picture — could detail Utah's chances to extend its inaugural season.
To Facer, Utah's biggest test from here on out: Finding a way to win a few of its remaining games when goaltender Karel Vejmelka needs a night off. His start against the Canucks marked his 10th straight, a career high.
