On our fourth and last Advent Sunday, we see Solomon's prayer for the king of Israel. Christians have always read this prayer as operating at two levels--the deeper of which is a prayer about what God's true king will do when He rules over the world. On this first Advent Sunday, we look at a special promise from God about a servant whom He would send to be a rescuer---to be "a covenant for the people and a light for the Gentiles," (Isa 42:6). Pastor Tyler preaches from Isaiah 42:1-9.

The world is full of leaders who are certain they control their own destinies. That they steer the ship of state. That God is meaningless. In democratic countries, this is usually never an explicit attitude--you can't be elected by hating God! But, it's sometimes an unspoken and implicit mindset that results in the same thing. Rather than begin Paul's long discussion about Israel (Rom 9-11), and stopping for Advent, we'll break from Romans and take a two-week detour before Advent begins! This detour will take us through the first two Psalms. This morning, the scripture asks us to think about the kind of person whom God blesses. What does his life look like? Her attitude? Thoughts? Some Christians are tortured by guilt. By shame. By failing to be what they ought to be. Yes, critical self-reflection is good. But God doesn't want believers to wallow in despair, without hope. Yes, we're each a work in progress and we must ask God to help us be holy people (1 Peter 1:13-16). But, God wants us to live with bold, joyful confidence because He's adopted us. Sometimes events or trends of the day dominate everything. Today, worries about politics and cultural craziness dominate a lot of Christian conversation--it shapes our sermons, or books, our worries. In the Apostle Paul's day, confusion about the distinction between grace and legalism was the topic. It's why he talked about it all the time. He probably wished he could talk about other stuff, but this was the issue, so he had to spend time on it. In our text this morning, Paul explains how law and grace are supposed to work together.
