Rachel Field was an American novelist, poet, and children's fiction writer. She is best known for the Newbery Award–winning Hitty, Her First Hundred Years. Field also won a National Book Award, Newbery Honor award and two of her books are on the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award list.
Prayer for a Child is a 1944 book with artwork by Elizabeth Orton Jones, which won a Caldecott Medal in 1945, an award that recognizes the previous year's most distinguished American picture book for children.
The book is told with the voice of a little girl, but it is meant to represent children as a whole, with their love, gentleness, and care for the world.
