Are you asking the right question? I had trouble with my door lock. The locksmith cut a new key, and the lock worked fine. It wasn't the lock. It was the key. I didn't have the wrong answer. I had the wrong question.

I've got a few tactics and ideas about asking questions. 

More of an update to friends that listen. I've on a 100 Day Challenge, and I thought I'd give an update on the progress and the plan. 

I share 10 ideas I use to do the best I can.

Mistakes only happen for 2 reasons: 1) lack of knowledge and 2) lack of attention. What are you doing to enhance your knowledge and attention? I live off of personal documentation to avoid the lack of knowledge, and I use calendars and reminders to avoid lack of attention. 

I share a few of my tactics and ideas. What do you use? How do you avoid mistakes?

Are you trying to get better at your job? Is your team getting better? Do your people know exactly what is expected? Are they surprised at yearly reviews? 

How many times do you get asked, “What do you do?”  How do you answer? Before Clay Hebert, I try to use a title, like Sales VP or Instructor. Maybe a sentence or two about the particulars of the job or the industry. The trouble is you are fishing in the dark if you don’t know what the other person is interested in.  Why are they asking you? It might be just so they can say what they do; it might be just small talk to break the ice and start a conversation.  Or it might be genuine interest in what you do -- probably not, but it is possible.

Clay’s formula is easy enough. Here’s it is:

I (blank) people to (blank).

For example, I teach people to fish.

or I help people fly.

The goal is to be interesting, maybe a little mysterious or intriguing. The goal isn’t to be informative and complete. It’s not a job interview. It’s a social interaction.
