  • S1, E86: FlowHaus - Mitch Matthews

From facing the brutal cuts of NFL teams to hiking a Polish mountain in freezing temperatures wearing nothing but shorts and gloves, Mitch Matthews brings us on a remarkable journey of personal transformation that led to creating FlowHaus—a sanctuary designed to elevate human connection through hot and cold therapy.

Matthews opens up about the psychological challenges of transitioning from football stardom to the uncertainty of post-athletic life. "I'm done playing football, I just started this business, my mom had just passed away," he shares, revealing the perfect storm that pushed him toward a profound reset. When a fateful meeting with Wim Hof in Poland introduced him to breathwork and cold exposure, Matthews discovered something more valuable than physical resilience—he found a pathway to peak mental states and authentic human connection.

Flow House emerged from Matthews' realization that the transformative experiences he had in Poland could be accessible to everyone. But this isn't just another wellness trend or sauna facility. "FlowHaus is first a message and a feeling," Matthews explains. "Second, it's a community... and then, thirdly, it's a space." In a world where digital connection has replaced genuine human interaction, Matthews has created an environment where strangers become confidants through shared experiences in breath, heat, and cold.

The conversation takes a fascinating turn when Matthews shares his philosophy on success: "If you want a good career and you want a good business, listen to everyone who's gone before you and done it. But if you want a successful life, sometimes it means listening to nobody." This counterintuitive wisdom, along with his concept of the "celery test"—filtering all advice through your own intuition—offers a refreshing perspective on authentic living in an advice-saturated world.

Whether you're navigating a major life transition, seeking deeper community connections, or simply curious about the science behind cold plunges and sauna therapy, this conversation will leave you contemplating how intentional discomfort might be the gateway to your next level of growth. As Matthews puts it: "The feeling is like being in the zone where you just can't miss that shot—peak confidence, peak flow."

  • Vault Episode 3: Cameron & Ying Nance - Part 1

What happens when a comic book-loving Utah kid meets the daughter of a prominent Thai family? Something magical, as it turns out.

Cameron and Ying Nance's story reads like the plot of a Netflix original – he was a Dragon Ball Z enthusiast from Salt Lake City who found himself teaching English to one of Thailand's most revered Buddhist monks. She was the youngest child in a family of Thai pop stars and celebrities. Their paths crossed at a temple ceremony, where the monk eerily predicted their future marriage during only their second meeting.

But this episode goes deeper than their romantic journey. Cameron shares profound wisdom learned during his time living at a Thai temple, including life-changing meditation practices that helped him overcome anxiety by learning to stay present. "People who are depressed are living in the past too much," the monk told him. "You're unhappy because you think about the future too much, which causes anxiety."

Meanwhile, Ying reveals her entrepreneurial spirit that emerged despite an uncle's discouraging words that she was "good at many things, but not specifically anything." She proved him wrong by successfully building a business importing Chicago's Garrett Popcorn to Thailand while still in college, making $10,000 without significant startup capital.

Their journey weaves through Cameron's unexpected stint as a Thai TV star (complete with a shaved head), cultural differences, family expectations, and ultimately to Salt Lake City, where they've built two thriving businesses – Chubby Baker Donuts and Bespoke Custom Clothing.

Ready to be inspired? Listen now to discover how this unlikely pair found each other across cultures and continents to create something beautiful together in the heart of Utah.

We're excited to bring back this incredible conversation with David Garbett, founder of O2 Utah—now known as Stewardship Utah after its recent merger. This transformation marks a new chapter in local climate advocacy, continuing the mission to protect Utah's environment and improve air quality across the state.

Imagine hiking the breathtaking trails of Salt Lake Valley, the crisp mountain air filling your lungs, only to realize that the air could be cleaner, healthier, better. This very realization is what drove David, a Salt Lake native with a deep love for the outdoors, to launch a movement dedicated to environmental progress. He shares insights into the political dynamics that shaped his path, the role of social and emotional learning, and the importance of creating solutions that deliver a double bottom line: environmental impact and community benefit.

You'll learn how elections can influence climate policy, the unique challenges facing Salt Lake City's air quality, and the critical role of biking and walking infrastructure. David's story is a powerful reminder of what it means to stay informed, get involved, and make a tangible difference.

  • Tuesday Announcements 5/6: Children's Museum Guest, Events, Concerts, and This Week's Beer Loving Guest

Career success without fulfillment is just a paycheck. Kathleen Bodenlos discovered this truth after spending a decade climbing the corporate ladder, only to realize that external achievements weren't filling her soul. Our conversation takes an unexpected turn as she reveals how childhood memories of her favorite museum sparked a complete career reinvention, eventually leading her to become CEO of Discovery Gateway Children's Museum in Salt Lake City.

What makes this episode particularly compelling is how universal Kathleen's experience feels. We dive deep into questions many professionals silently struggle with: How do you recognize when your career path isn't right for you? • S1, E85: Discovery Gateway Children's Museum, CEO - Kathleen Bodenlos

Kathleen Bodenlos had everything society told her she should want – a successful corporate career with good pay and prestige. Yet something was missing. "I thought success would make me fulfilled and it was not fulfilling," she reflects. That realization sparked a dramatic career shift that would eventually lead her to Salt Lake City and the helm of Discovery Gateway Children's Museum.

Ten years ago, Kathleen took a significant pay cut to pursue her childhood passion for museums, beginning at the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh where she grew up. Despite skepticism from friends, the move immediately felt right: "I didn't feel like I was working anymore." This authentic alignment with her values carried her through roles at several prestigious institutions before landing in Utah to lead Discovery Gateway during its most challenging period.

When Kathleen arrived, the museum was struggling – closed for months due to COVID and facing an uncertain future. She developed an ambitious renovation plan that was originally meant to take a decade. Through strategic partnerships with corporate sponsors and her energetic leadership style, she's accomplished that transformation in just five years, earning her the 2024 CEO of the Year Award in Utah.

The revitalized museum now features extraordinary new exhibits like a dinosaur display with authentic fossils, a stunning $3.5 million train installation (donated by a couple who reached out via Instagram), and an Associated Foods tractor-trailer that teaches children about food supply chains. Coming soon: an Intermountain Healthcare exhibit focused on emotional wellbeing and what will become the largest children's rooftop garden in the country.

Beyond the exhibits, Kathleen has expanded access through programs like the Museum Inclusion Fund and reduced admission for families on public assistance. Her philosophy centers around creating spaces where both children and adults can experience joy, wonder, and creativity together – reconnecting with that childlike spark that many of us lose in adulthood.

Ready to rediscover your sense of wonder? Visit discoverygateway.org to learn more about upcoming exhibits and plan your visit to this remarkable Salt Lake City treasure.

  • S1, E84: The Comedy Church - Adam Broud

What happens when a former Mormon decides to turn his religious upbringing into comedy gold? Adam Broud joins us to share his fascinating journey from rural poverty to BYU graduate to the co-founder of Comedy Church, a unique comedy experience that playfully examines religious upbringings without resorting to faith-bashing.

Growing up poor with limited exposure to higher education, Adam never imagined he'd find himself on comedy stages across the country. His path took an unexpected turn when fellow comedian Greg Kyte approached him about co-hosting Comedy Church, creating a space where they could use humor to process their religious pasts. What began as local shows has expanded to performances nationwide, where they explore not just Mormon experiences but regional religious identities from Judaism in New York to evangelical backgrounds in Texas.

Our conversation delves into the complex relationship between comedy and religion, particularly how the same jokes land differently in Utah versus other parts of the country. "In Utah, people think I have it out for the church," Adam explains, "but when I perform the exact same material elsewhere, audiences are surprised by how gentle I am toward religion." This dichotomy reflects the heightened sensitivities that exist in post-Mormon spaces and how religious identity remains deeply intertwined with personal identity.

We also explore the surprising national fascination with Mormon culture—from "soaking" to dirty soda shops—and how these peculiarities have become cultural touchpoints that outsiders find endlessly fascinating. Adam notes that while Utah comedians often worry their Mormon material won't translate outside the state, he frequently finds the opposite to be true: audiences across America are hungry for these unique perspectives.

Whether you're post-religious, curious about Mormon culture, or simply appreciate thoughtful comedy, Adam's journey from mission-bound Mormon to boundary-pushing comedian offers a window into how humor can help us process our pasts while creating community in the present.
