Small Town Secrets

Just slighty before the events that would become the Mothman saga began. Another encoutner would happen along a West Virgina road near Parkersburg. Even though it has little to do with mothman is often rolled into the story. The simple reason is becasue Keel started researching this case along side Mothman and decided to include it in the book. This is the story of Woodrow Derenberger and his friend Indrid Cold.

Indrid Cold wasn’t the only spaceman zipping around the skies in and around the Point Pleasant area in 1966 and 1967. There were plenty of other reports of crazy things in the sky during that time.

Point Pleasant is a small close-knit community just across the Ohio River from Gallipolis. Like many little towns in West Virgina, it’s quiet and keeps to itself. It’s surrouned by woodlands and winding roads once these roads get you to next small town the cycle repeats. Also like many town in WV it has a history of strange happens, it would start with sightings of the Mothman in 1966 and end with the collapse of the Silver Bridge in ’67.

Some say the Mothman was a harbinger of death and destruction? That remains to be seen and is still widely discussed. However on December 15, 1967 a disaster would befall Point Pleasant and afterwards the Mothman would seem to fade away or perhaps just forgotten.

Standberry is a little place, with a population of around 1185 according to the 2010 Census. It lies in Gentry County Missouri. It’s a quiet place, like so places like it not much happens that was until Mike “Madman” Marcum moved in. This story starts off with a fun electrical experiment and ends up in the realm of time travel.

Sheppton Pennsylvania like many small towns in Pennsylvania used to live, breath and eat coal.  It was a coal-mining town, just like so many others.  However, on August 13, 1963, three men would enter a defunct mine at Oneida Slope number 2.  Hank Thorne, Dave Fellin, and Lois Bova went down into the darkness at 7:30 AM; two of them wouldn't see daylight for 14 days.  One would never see daylight again.

Almost a year before the Sheppton incident a very different mining disaster took place.  In 1963 in the little town of Centralia PA a coal fire would start and still burns to this day. Coal mining started in the area around Centralia in the 1850’s.  The mining became a boom and Centralia would grow into a community of 2,761 at its peak in the 1890’s.  Coal would be the lifeblood of the little town but it would also be it’s undoing.

Chowcilla California lays in Madera County with a population of 18,270. It’s name is derived from Native American tribe known as the Chaushila, a Yokut tribe. It is said that the name translates to “murderers” which is a reference to the warlike nature of the tribe. Other then it’s intereting name there is not much to be said about the little town, but in 1976 something did happen that would put Chowcilla on the map.

Skidmore is indeed a small town, with only a population of 284. The local St. Oswald’s Protestant Epicopal Church is on is on the National Register of Historic Places. The town held a yearly “Punkin’ Show” up until 2004. It’s not the Punkin’ Show or the historical church people whisper about when they talk about Skidmore, it’s the shooting of former town bully Kennith Rex Mcelory. As you well see this story is the epitome of a small town secret.

Thunder Bay sits on the coast of Lake Superior just north the Michigan border.   It boasts a population of around 108,000.   It is actually an amalgamation of former cities Port Arthur and Fort William.  On January 1st, 1970 the city of Thunder Bay was officially born.  Just off the coast on the US side of the border lies Isle Royale.  It’s now a state park full of hiking trails and campgrounds.  Surrounding this island are a number of shipwrecks.  One of them was called the SS Algoma.

Located close to Chicago in Rogers Township Illinois is small town known a Stelle. The town’s poputlation is around 100 or so. Today it’s a very different type of place then what you would normally see. The residetns maintain their own telephone and internet servieces as well as water treatment, and use mostly soloar and wind power. Today it’s a tight knit comunity focusing on a sustainable living. However that was not always the community’s purpose.
