  • STT 054 - Constant Confession Is Not Condemnation but Comfort (HC LD 51, Q/A 126)

Why would Jesus teach his disciples to remember their sin and need of grace and to continually ask God for forgiveness? Might it have been for their comfort? Perhaps we feel condemned when we more deeply recognize our sin and need for God's grace. Maybe we'd rather avoid thinking about our sin than confess it. But Jesus taught us that confession and asking for forgiveness is important, in fact, essential to the Christian life.

Why would we ever ask God for things we already have? Praying "Give us this day our daily bread" may feel a little forced when our pantries and refrigerators are stocked with food. But this little line is important to pray. Why? Find out in today's show.

  • STT 052 - Do You Really Believe God’s Will Is Best for You? (HC LD 49, Q/A 124)

Christmas is coming. A great gift idea for under $5 is to buy a friend a copy of the Heidelberg Catechism. Pick up my NEW RELEASE on Amazon, The Heidelberg Catechism: True Comfort for Life & Death.

It is amazing how appealing our will can be. We want to do what we want to do, and we're often skeptical about the goodness of God's will. Why would Jesus teach us to pray, "Thy will be done"? There must be something inherently good about God's will, in fact, much better than our will. We need to trust ourselves less and God more, and that's why we need to pray, "Thy will be done."

Much church growth material focuses on marketing strategies and practical advice about how to appeal to culture. But what about the Lord's Prayer? Christ said he will build his church, and Christ also taught his disciples to pray for his kingdom to come. Do we know what to pray for? Our Lord wants us to pray for the increase of his church.

How we think about God influences our prayer life. In the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 6, Jesus taught his disciples how to pray. We can learn a lot of substantial theology from the Lord's Prayer. How does Jesus want us to think about God?

What drives us to prayer? Isn't it the awareness of our great need? When we are aware of our physical and spiritual needs, we go to God in prayer for help. However, sometimes, we don't pray with much confidence. Our heavenly Father welcomes us to bring our needs to Him, and He wants us to come expecting good from Him. When we pray, we should express our gratitude for receiving His grace and Spirit.

It is very easy to grow discouraged that we are not making more progress in our fight against sin. However, we are making progress. Even baby steps are progress that pleases and honor our Father. Though our pace of sanctification is often slower than we'd like, we must remember that God's grace is still working and we are still progressing.

Christians are greatly challenged to speak the truth amidst a culture that hates the truth. As people who have received the mercy and grace of God, how do we now express our gratitude in our speech? How can we dialogue with people who think very differently than we do, in fact, in many ways despise what we believe? The Holy Spirit will help us to obey the Ninth Commandment as we interchange with a world that hates truth.
