The Heidelberg Catechism can help us understand our sinful inclinations. Though God's law exposes our sin, it also pushes us to Christ for comfort and rest. When we realize how deeply sin goes into us, we run to Christ, we receive Christ by true faith, and Christ helps us in our deepest struggles. There is comfort, rest, and hope in Christ as we battle and repent of concupiscence.

In the political climate of today, many Christians are struggling with their thoughts, words, and actions toward politicians. It's a polarizing time. Perhaps it would help us to consider that inside our hearts the trigger is easily pulled. We need to turn to Christ to help us repent of anger, hatred, bitterness, and antagonism and to, through faith, put on Christ. Tune in for a thought about the sixth commandment.

A hot topic in our society and culture today is how to relate to authority, especially the overreach of authority. It seems as if Romans 13 and 1 Peter 2 are now texts that Christians fight over. How should Christians respond to lawful and unlawful authority? This episode will not explore the different angles on civil disobedience or when to dissent, but it does focus on the heart of the Fifth Commandment which ultimately is about love for our neighbor. Tune in to be challenged to honor, love, and faithful submission to lawful earthly authority.

I love being the pastor of Jerusalem Church in the small town of Manheim, PA. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else. My desire is that this podcast serves my local church well. I also want to reach outside the bounds of my church. In my experience, many local churches and the Christians in them have moved away from the historical and ecumenical creeds (Apostles', Nicene, Athanasian) and Reformed confessions/catechisms. This has left the church somewhat confused about what it believes and how it should live.
Kevin DeYoung wrote a book titled The Good News We Almost Forgot: Rediscovering the Gospel in a 16th Century Catechism. It's a book about the Heidelberg Catechism. Many people, including Reformed/Presbyterian Christians, have forgotten the usefulness of the Heidelberg Catechism and the ancient creeds. I would love to be part of a resurgence of these invaluable resources. My hope is that this podcast will encourage and deepen the Word and sacraments ministry of my local church and other local churches.
Charles Spurgeon was an eloquent man. God used him in mighty ways to contend for the truth of God's Word. In this episode is a Spurgeon quote worth careful consideration, especially for our times. God's infallible Word brings clarity and joy to those who believe and submit themselves to it.

One guy calling the shots in a local church? Dangerous, unless the guy is the God-man Jesus Christ. The plurality of elders is not only Biblical, it practically protects pastors and churches from pain.

Parents love to see their kids involved in many activities, good activities. Christian parents often want their kids to be involved in Christian activities as well, things like youth group, camps, and VBSs. But what means has God ordained, as the primary means, to work and strengthen faith in our kids? What does Scripture emphasize in terms of spiritual nourishment, strength, and growth?
