  • Episode 38: Exploring Ancient South American Mummification and a Taste of Peruvian Cuisine

Are you ready to uncork a bottle of history lesser known to most? Prepare to be transported back in time as Phoenix and I pull you through the winding corridors of South American civilization, exposing the ancient art of mummification in all its eerie grandeur. Unveiling the mystic practices of the Inca Empire, the Nazca civilization, and the Mochi civilization, we piece together theories of intentional cranial deformation and unearth influences possibly not of this Earth. Our journey doesn't end there. We breathe life into the 3D-like model discovered near Chanchand, Peru, in a bid to illuminate the beliefs, customs, and rituals of these ancient people.

But we're not just historians, we're also quite the culinary explorers. We whisk up a traditional Peruvian delight, a creamy spiced hot chocolate, perfect for cozy winter nights or an early morning jolt of warmth. With rich cocoa powder, a dash of sugar, and a mosaic of spices like cinnamon, cloves, and star anise, this chocolaty marvel is more than just a drink; it's a taste of Peru's vibrant culture. Stick with us as we simmer history and gastronomy into one delicious podcast episode. Trust us, it's a ride you don't want to miss!

  • Episode 31: The Great Locomotive Chase

The United States Civil War is a never-ending source of tales of bravery, valor, and danger. But few stories capture the spirit of the battle quite like the Great Locomotive Chase. In this episode of Smarticus Tells History, we explore the strangest locomotive heist that ever was. Led by a civilian spy, a group of Union volunteers commandeered a locomotive engine to destroy the rail lines between Atlanta and Chattanooga. If successful, the raid would have successfully mangled the Confederacy’s supply lines beyond repair. But the raiders were wholly unprepared for the speed and determination of one slighted locomotive conductor, who single-handedly foiled their plot. The men who attempted this incredible feat were awarded with the first ever Medals of Honor.

    Highlights:

The Great Locomotive Chase in 1863 ended in failure, but its brave participants earned the first Medals of Honor. Highlights include:

    • A look at the strategy of Brigadier General Mitchel in capturing Huntsville and Chattanooga, and the challenged presented by southern railroad lines.
    • The man who presented the solution, a mysterious civilian spy names James J. Andrews
    • The soggy push toward rendezvous in Marietta that caused Andrews and his men to fall behind schedule.
    • The successful first moment of the Great Locomotive Chase, in which Andrews and his men steal a locomotive in full view of Confederate sentries and a dining room full of civilians.
    • The unbelievable tenacity of locomotive conductor William Fuller, who chased Andrews and his men first on foot, then using three different commandeered locomotives.
    • The order by Andrews to abandon the plan, and the fate that awaited the raiders as they plunged into the wilderness of the Confederate south.
    • The awarding of the first ever Medal of Honor.
    • Walt Disney made a movie of Andrews’ exploits in 1956 called The Great Locomotive Chase starring Fess Parker as Andrews
    • Buster Keaton’s 1927 movie, The General was loosely based on the incident.

  • Episode 30: The Anglo-Zanzibar War

There is no shortage of historical conflict to talk about, but only one war in known history started and ended on the same day. As a result of a jilted sultan-to-be calling a British bluff, the Anglo-Zanzibar War in 1896 was over in less than an hour. In this episode of Smarticus Tells History, Smarticus explains the complicated protectorate relationship that led to the British gaining control of the Zanzibari Sultanate and introduces you to a young heir to the throne who stared down the British Navy in his refusal to step aside. While ridiculous in its brevity, the Anglo-Zanzibar War resulted in hundreds of deaths and the needless destruction of the iconic palace of Zanzibar.

    Highlights:

The Anglo-Zanzibar War lasted less than an hour but was building for years. Some of the highlights include:

A look at the history of warfare and conflict throughout recorded history.

    • A primer on British protectorate relations with Zanzibar.
    • The line of succession that led to (and side-stepped) young Khalid bin Barghash.
    • Khalid’s first attempt to ascend to the throne after the death of his father.
    • The reign of Hamad and its abrupt end that prompted another attempt to mount the throne by Khalid.
    • The standoff in the palace square that led to an ultimatum for would-be-sultan Khalid.
    • The conflict that lasted less than an hour and would be known as the world’s shortest war.
    • The fate of Khalid and the country of Zanzibar.

  • Episode 29: Dublin Whiskey Fire

On a summer night in 1875, more than a dozen Dubliners drank so much whiskey they all perished. But it wasn’t a special occasion, and none of them ordered a single dram from a pub. They were all causalities of the Dublin Whiskey Fire. On this episode of Smarticus Tells History, Marty tells us the unbelievable story of the most destructive fire in Dublin’s history, which started in a whiskey storehouse in The Liberties and nearly engulfed both a maternity hospital and a convent. He also examines the history of Ireland’s ties to alcohol and uncovers the truth about where the “drunk Irish” stereotypes were born. Grab a saucepan, hat, or boot because you’ll want to be ready to collect your fill of free whiskey during this episode. (Just don’t consume it all at once!)

    Highlights:

Marty tells us the about the Dublin Whiskey Fire, which claimed over a dozen lives without ever touching them. Highlights include:

    • A brief history of Ireland’s manufacturing of whiskey and beer
    • Irish pub culture and how alcohol is a given part of social life for many Irish people
    • Why stereotypes about Irish drunkenness spread, despite alcohol consumption being less than or equal to the rest of Europe for centuries
    • Why city-dwellers feared fire above all else
    • The Dublin Fire Brigade’s heroic and inventive method for containing the unwieldy blaze
    • Why some people were not running from the fiery whiskey river, but rather to it
    • William Smith’s sad story of a nighttime stroll turned catastrophic over intoxication
    • The aftermath of the Whiskey Fire: causalities, damages, and public perceptions.
