Listen Later

Sacramento International Airport is building a new parking garage. CHHS Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly is stepping down. Finally, California Humanities holds a voter turnout panel discussion in Sacramento.

SMForward Garage Breaks Ground
Travelers to Sacramento International Airport are going to see a lot more construction - and find some alternative parking places - in the near future. The airport is breaking ground on the newest component of its $1.3 billion SMForward modernization plan - a new parking garage near Terminal B. Sacramento  County Director of Airports Cindy Nichol joins Insight to talk about why this expansion is needed, what options are available for passengers, and what other projects will be taking place at SMF.

CHHS Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly Steps Down

Dr. Mark Ghaly is the Secretary of California’s Health and Human Services Agency, and was a driving force behind California's response to COVID-19. Earlier this month he announced he would be stepping down after leading the agency since 2019. Gov. Gavin Newsom appointed Kim Johnson as the incoming Health and Human Services Secretary, and she begins her new post on Oct. 1. Although Dr. Ghaly’s five years in Gov. Newsom’s cabinet is largely marked by the pandemic, his agency touches a wide range of how the state shapes the wellbeing of Californians. Insight host Vicki Gonzalez sat down with Dr. Ghaly in his final days leading CHHS.

California Humanities Voter Turnout Discussion
California’s voting system has undergone major reforms to encourage voting - even going as far as mailing ballots to every registered voter during the 2020 presidential election. But voter turnout still remains low. This week, the nonprofit California Humanities is taking a look at why turnout is slumping, and what can be done to improve participation. Rick Noguchi, President and CEO of California Humanities talks about his organization’s work, and the free public panel being held at the Sacramento Public Library Galleria on Oct. 3.
