In this episode, I dive into many insights and ideas from Jamil Zaki and his book The War for Kindness: Building Empathy in a Fractured World.
I also give my own thoughts on ideal empathy, how we can cultivate it along with kindness in ourselves and in our culture.
In this episode, I discuss why I believe hope is such a powerful quality, skill, and state to build and reinforce. I share some analogies and anecdotes, and finish up with simple strategies to create more hope and optimism in our lives.
Here's what this is all about:
👉🏻 Honest, deep conversations are valuable and important. They develop greater connection and trust within, and between, yourself and the people in your life.
👉🏻 Tune into your own energy and intuition, what you feel. And TRUST it. You, and your system know more than you can rationalize or explain.
⠀
👉🏻 Let it out. Don’t hold yourself back because you’re afraid of taking up space, annoying people, or prying too much. Be you.
⠀
This is an ongoing process. Something I’ve worked at, and continue to work at, because I want to show up as best I can for people in my life.
⠀
As I’ve spoken on before, I have aversions to taking up space. Issues around consistently sharing my thoughts, questions, and feelings (especially in person) because I don’t want to annoy people or overstep perceived boundaries.
⠀
I often sense things in people, and I’m uncomfortable asking the questions that pop into my mind.
⠀
I often want to share something I’m feeling, but I’m uncomfortable jumping into communal space.
⠀
A part of me goes back over many interactions I’ve had, both recent and very old, and worries that I didn’t listen well enough, I didn’t ask enough questions, didn’t tune in enough to the other person/people, and that I spoke too much (especially about myself).
⠀
I simultaneously worry I should’ve said something I didn’t. That one always feels crappy, doesn’t it?
⠀
All that being said, I LOVE talking with people. I love getting deep, and just being present around others, connecting with them.
⠀
I’m introverted, independent, AND social. But it has to be the right kind of social for me.
⠀
I’m lightyears ahead of where I was even a couple years ago, and in some ways unrecognizable from 8-10 years back. I keep digging, and keep finding more opportunities for growth.
⠀
I am extremely perceptive (that makes me uncomfortable to even write). It’s time I own it fully instead of dismissing what I feel and think.
⠀
I believe most of us are more perceptive than we give ourselves credit for. I’m trying to choose more often than not to listen to myself…so I can better use my voice.
⠀
NOTES:
⠀
I’ve uploaded this audio as a podcast episode in case you’d rather listen than watch. Also on YouTube.

I’ll be planning to do a Little Chair Chat at least 1x per week.

In this episode Amir (@beardthebestyoucanbe) and I have some light and heavy conversations on mental health and mindset: overcoming injuries and negative mental states.
We also talk at length about mobility and aerobic training, and the disconnect between what humans need, and how we typically behave.
This is a story about a (poorly managed) concussion I got, and how it gifted me greater gratitude. I share a strategy I use for lifting my mindset and promoting gratitude in your daily life.
In this episode, I talk about Entropy, a gradual decline into disorder.
I discuss my Hourglass Analogy as a way to visualize how our consistent habits can elevate our baseline, combat entropy, and help us maintain progress and success with our training.
