March 23, 2023 Kharkanas read along announcement
We've been teasing this for about as long as there has been a Smiley's Podcast. And, through thick and thin, exams, Covid, two different series by Esslemont, three separate author interviews, AND the Witness trilogy (Gods, we did every series except for Kharkanas, didn't we?), we're finally tackling the beast known as the Kharkanas Trilogy.
The format is relatively simple: Each week (under ideal conditions), we'll be releasing two episodes concurrently. One is a summary and spoilerless discussion of the book thus far, as well as anything that stood out to us, while the second episode is a full spoiler (for both Kharkanas books & every other book in the Malazan mythos) discussion.
Our next episode is on the prelude of Forge of Darkness, and is unique in that we did not do full spoilers for the rest of Kharkanas insofar as that's possible.

[Mild spoilers MBOTF and NOTME] This is our end of book discussion of the third instalment of the Malazan prequel series, Path to Ascendancy by Ian C. Esslemont.
Lee sounds like a god damned broken record at this point. Our central duo in the books is starting to take more of a back seat in the story, but they're still hilarious. New blood takes the forefront, and old names arise once more to fill the gaps. Fun times are had by all... mostly.
Help yourself to reading PtA. These books are both hilarious & an excellent entry to the Malazan world.

January 22, 2023 A Sojourn at our Humble Tavern for a conversation on the Novels with Ian C. Esslemont!

Well, friends, this is it. We got the man himself. Ian Esslemont agreed to lend us some of his time to have a chat about all sorts of things. From the Novels, to writing styles, to influences on writing - the man is wicked smart & it shows.
We did face a couple technical problems that we have fixed by now, & so if some questions or parts of the audio are repeated, we humbly apologise.
Regardless, after twenty-five episodes, this marks the end of the first season of Smiley's. We'll be back soon - with a vengeance - to tackle some further books in the extended Malazan mythos. We'll probably be back for another chat with Ian by the time Forge of the High Mage comes out. The sky's the limit!
