The first thing every pilgrim learns to do on the Camino de Santiago is look for the arrows. These are the markers that signpost The Way. they are numerous and readily available but often a pilgrim will not notice the arrow and then become lost or disoriented. In our lives we have distinct arrows or markers pointing the way towards our goals, dreams and desires. We need to look for them and follow them, after all we have created them. SOE264: Ask for Help

Often we are too proud or fearful to ask for help. We view this as a weakness or a vulnerability, but nobody lives in a vacuum, and without the help others, we cannot live full, productive lives. On the Camino, you have to be willing to ask for help and to receive support. There is a saying that the Camino gives you what you need, and this was my experience every single day. Often when I thought of the help, I needed another person would pass by and offer precisely what I needed at that moment. Abundance cannot come to us if we are not willing to ask for it and receive it. Just like a car won’t drive without the ignition been turned on, abundance cannot flow without our desire for it and our willingness to receive it. READ THE BOOK – Letters from The Way

Love in the form of friendship makes the world go round. On the Camino, strangers walk into your life and walk out friends and family, changing your forever. This is a unique experience on the Camino where people connect very deeply with one another, experiencing love and compassion for their fellow pilgrims. Often in life we block ourselves from forming new friendships, scared that others will hurt and disappoint us, but every friendship in life has the capacity to help us grow, even the toxic relationships. When you walk for 900km across Spain on the Camino de Santiago, you meet a lot of people and listen to a lot of stories. Following the advice I received before leaving home, I decided to make the time and effort to stop and listen to people’s stories. Not only did I become a conduit for people to receive awareness and healing as they spoke, but I received many valuable life lessons and messages as I walked and listened. This is the power of listening, becoming a receptacle for what you need to hear, both for yourself and the speaker. You create a space in which people can be heard, understood and loved. On the 5th anniversary of setting off to walk the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage across Spain, I reflect on that first obstacle that I had to face – The Pyrenees Mountains. In life, we have mountains we climb and often feel overwhelmed by the enormity of the struggle. However, we have to keep on going and not only be prepared to reach the summit but also come down the other side. The way you descend is different from how you ascend, plan for both. In order for us to create whatever we want in life we need to be fully engaged with our desire for it. Without desire we also lose our creativity and this can lead to us living lacklustre lives. Life is all about creation and creation is all about desire. This is the holy trinity of the human experience.

This is how we create power and freedom in our lives, not by knowledge alone.

Paulo Coelho says, “You drown not by falling into the river, but by staying submerged in it.” From my real life experience with drowning, I can say this is true. I didn’t nearly drown because I was in the pool or fell into the rapids, I almost drowned because I remain submerged. There are times when you feel overwhelmed by life as if you’re drowning. You’re not drowning because you’re in that situation, you’re drowning because you’re submerged in it. Stop drowning and emerge from that overwhelming situation. It’s more likely the exit strategy needs to be radically different from how you landed in that circumstance and may even be painful, but as long as you remain submerged you will continue to drown.

Giving from a sense of obligation is one of the worst feelings in the world. The current of open-hearted free flowing giving is stunted with obligation and other emotions such as resentment, unworthiness and long-suffering. We should only give generously with an open heart. Any other form of giving can’t be classified as giving in it’s purest form. The good news is you’re not under any obligation to give and if you can’t give with an open and free heart, preferably do not give at all.
