Join Crystal as she interviews a new friend from the new town she just moved to, August VanRynsoever. The two have some WILD stories for you!

 Do you ever get nervous that your Sobriety will be challenged if you move to a different town?   I know I was nervous. So, I just stuck my neck out, found a meeting and introduced myself. I immediately made new friends and we can connect and support each other's sober journey. I met August at a meeting and immediately I knew we were going to be friends! She is funny, outgoing and has a miracle story.  We had so much in common and I was also curious how she had been maintaining her sobriety with such a giant past. Our past is only our last direction, not our final direction.
August is so fun. She is a God fearing mother of two just like me! We even go to the same church on Sundays!

Let me tell you about August:
August is three years sober and a mother of two boys. She has overcome her addiction with Alcohol and now devotes her time with her boys, service in the recovery community and giving back to women who have been or are going through Domestic Violence victims.

About Martin: 

Martin Lockett is a writer and speaker whose words have impacted thousands of people, even before leaving prison. He served almost 18 years for manslaughter, caused by an accident one New Year’s eve where he drank excessively and drove through a stop light, colliding with a car carrying three people. Upon learning that the two people who died that night were volunteers in the drug and alcohol recovery community, Martin chose to honor them by dedicating his life to helping others through addiction counseling and drinking and driving prevention. 

Martin has made the most of his incarceration by striving to achieve an education and certifications to become a counselor. His list of educational accomplishments includes:

• Earned his high school GED
• Earned a Certificate of Human Services from Louisiana State University
• Graduated from Indiana University: Associate of Arts 
• Graduated from Colorado State University-Pueblo: Bachelor of Science in Sociology with honors 
• Graduated from California Coast University: Master of Science in Psychology with honors
• Became a member of the Delta Epsilon Tau International Honor Society
• Completed comprehensive substance abuse treatment program
• Interned and earned state certification as a substance abuse counselor (CADC I)

While in prison, he worked in the educational programs for inmates where he:

• Moderated DUI victim impact panels for three years that included offenders and victims and told his own story 
• Recorded detailed account of the night of the crash for use at various online panels during the pandemic 
• Mentored and trained inmates to become mentors for addictions recovery 
• Tutored inmates through the GED curriculum
• Counseled inmates through addictions treatment

As a writer, Martin has used his time behind bars to write in various forms, all with the intention of helping others with his story and life experiences.

• Wrote and published two books: his memoir, Prison to Purpose Pipeline and My Prison Life, his collection of essays 
• Published hundreds of blog posts on adjusting to prison life, maximizing opportunities behind bars, the impact of incarceration on families and communities, and current social justice issues
• Published articles in the Oregonian: Honoring my victims every day (2019);Time to pull back on mandatory minimum sentences (2020); Returning to Portland from prison with a commitment to make amends (2021); and Ex-offenders seeking a fresh start need help finding a home base (2021)

While serving his time, Martin Lockett modeled exemplary behavior throughout the entirety of his sentence by not receiving a single disciplinary report. He has focused on achieving his pledge to take up the work of his victims, which he intends to do for the rest of his life.

Join Crystal as she interviews Melissa. Melissa emailed her about her new book  I'm Sober ... Now What? .. and immediately Crystal was intrigued. I mean who doesn't ask that question when they get sober!!  After they met, immediately they had questions for each other and Crystal had to interview her on the Podcast! They had so much in common and share so many similar experiences about addiction and recovery. 

A little about Melissa- 

After more than two decades of substance abuse, multiple failed attempts at sobriety, numerous arrests, a revolving door of treatment facilities, and a rock bottom that resulted in near death on her basement floor, Melissa has finally achieved long-term sobriety and is eager to share with the world that addicts do recover!  Life after drinking is possible.
She is originally from a suburb north of Atlanta, Georgia, resides in Winston-Salem, North Carolina where she is raising her two youngest of four children with her husband, Derek.  Her second chance at being a present mother leaves her in a dialectical dance of gratitude and exhaustion but she wouldn’t want it any other way.
She currently works as an administrative assistant at Holy Family Catholic Church in Clemmons North Carolina. That’s right – even after all her self will run riot and messy decision making throughout her life, thanks to drinking vodka like its water and popping pills like they were breath mints, God brought her home and keeps her in His house where she can be of service to those in need.
She is an active member in the AA community, where she spends time as a guest speaker sharing her message of hope to those that are looking for a new way of life. She is a board member of Joseph-Mary Foundation, where she raises money for education and medical supplies for families in Cameroon, Africa. Her passion for reaching across the continents to those in need fuels her vision to not only lend a hand to her neighbor but help educate others about addiction through sharing her personal story.
With almost a decade in sobriety, Melissa is following her calling to love and support those whose lives have been impacted by addiction. She believes her divine intervention was meant to not only spare her own life, but to also be used as a conduit to connect the lost and broken with a higher power whom she knows as God.

About Jennifer: 

After miscarrying twice in 2015, losing her mom to lung cancer in 2016 and separating from her abusive husband in 2017 Jennifer Fox headed into 2018 knowing she needed to file for divorce, start over and create a happier life. But 2018 had something different in mind. After having a full hysterectomy in October and finalizing her divorce in November, she was sure 2019 would be better. And then she lost her baby brother Justin to a heroin overdose on December 5th, just 6 days after becoming legally divorced at 45 years old.

In 2019 Jennifer found herself in a rapid downward spiral to nowhere, drinking at least one bottle of wine a day, sometimes two, and sometimes topping that off with a "nightcap". By the fall she was quite literally drowning in grief over the loss of her brother, drinking like a raging alcoholic and had also put on 40 pounds. So she made a pact with herself. Instead of doing her annual Dry January, she was going to give up drinking for an entire year. In addition, she was going to become a runner, something she had dreamt of for many, many years, because runners embodied everything she wanted to be: dedicated, disciplined, fit and able to tackle hard things. To do this she committed to run one 5K every month until she could run the 3.1 miles without stopping to walk and feeling like she might die, her first being the Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving, 2019.  

2020 started off awesome, with the 3 day personal development conference for women created by Rachel Hollis, and at least 6 months of races on the calendar. By the time the global pandemic hit she was down 20 pounds, betting better at running each week and feeling incredibly strong in her sobriety. Though most people will find this hard to believe, Jennifer firmly states that despite COVID and the million dollar loss in her business because of it, 2020 was the best year of her adult life. Why? Tune in to hear her incredible story of loss, resilience, courage and authenticity, along with where her relationship is with alcohol today.

In December of 2017 Darcy gave up alcohol for good. It had turned into a coping mechanism for her and she no longer needed it.
