In this episode, you're "gonna hear some pretty great songs in a pretty ugly language". This is the (ironic, kind of) usual opening of this show, but it doesn't really fit this time. Because in this edition of Amongst The Krauts you're going to hear excerpts from songs that you probably wouldn't have guessed were from German-speaking bands. There's 80s noir electro pop by Krakow Loves Adana, there's indietronic by The Notwist and Lali Puna, and of course there's quirky 70s Bedroom-Yacht-Rock by John Moods, Mike's guest on this episode of Amongst The Krauts. They talk about their "stand-offish" relationship to German pop and the advantages and disadvantages of singing in English versus in German.

In this episode, the ghosts of William Burroughs, Jack Kerouac, Alan Ginsberg, John Giorno and Bob Cobbing make an appearance at the Bureau - as curator Steve Cleary plays us a selection of super rare recordings from the British Library Sound Archive. The Archive is one of the biggest curated resources of audio in the world and includes over 1 million discs, 185,000 tapes, and many other sound and video recordings from around the globe. Steve takes us on a wander through its unparalleled counterculture collection.

We also hear from the capital's foremost chronicler of the counterculture, Barry Miles, on Burroughs' life in London - along with a live recording of the beat writer at Manchester's Hacienda, a sampling of his cutups, some deeply strange sound poems and a wonderful recording of Kerouac jazz scatting at Neal Cassidy’s house.

In this episode, Soho Radio NYC's George Burton is joined by award-winning bassist and vocalist Meshell Ndegeocello. This is a snippet of their wonderful conversation - with music clips shortened right rights reasons - and we can't recommend enough the full-length show available on our mixcloud.

Ndegeocello’s artistic genius has been long documented. So has her expansive scope. Funk, soul, jazz, hip hop, reggae, rock, and more all have a place in her music. As one critic noted, she even helped “spark the neo-soul movement.” Her wide range is evident in not just her music but also her conversation with George as it incorporates everyone from Stevie Wonder to Joni Mitchell to Ben Webster to Jason Moran. The dialogue also advances Ndegocello’s role as a philosopher. Time, in particular, takes on a central role in the discussion, whether Ndegeocello’s ability to use technology in otherwise idle time to create art or how now is the moment to change society for the better.
