  • Sojourner Truth Radio: April 4, 2017 – 50 Years Later, Martin Luther King's "Beyond Vietnam" Speech
On the 49th anniversary of the assassination of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, we're reminded that this is also the 50th anniversary of his famous "Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence" speech," given April 4, 1967 at Riverside Church in New York City. Dr. King was roundly criticized for making the speech for not solely focusing on civil rights. According to the Washington Post, Martin Luther King "[had] done a grave injury to those who are his natural allies and a graver injury to himself." The New York Times referred to the speech as "Dr. King's error." Today, we mark these two important anniversaries. Our guests are Frank Joyce, from the National Council of Elders Leadership Team; Aljosie Aldrich Harding, Leadership Team member and widow of King's speechwriter, Vincent Harding; and Ash-Lee Henderson of the Highlander Institute, the Movement for Black Lives and Project South.
