Difficulties and trials would not normally be considered an occasion for joy, but James and Paul exhort us to look beyond the immediate pain and discomforts of trials to the lasting effect they have on the character of the Christian. It is the expectation of results, the development of our character, that should cause us to rejoice in adversity.

Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails (Proverbs 19:21). It is important that we seek to align our plan with God’s purpose. James tells us here that when it comes to making plans, we have three choices.

"Enduring for the Sake of the Kingdom"

"Dark Night Great Light"

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.
