*English panel discussion!* (Episode presented in both English (main) and Tamil) 🤓🤓🎤🎤🌊📖
It was only last year that Singapore celebrated its bicentennial milestone, which marked the 200th year of Stamford Raffles' founding of the nation. However, Singapore's history is intertwined with that of the larger region and is almost 700 years-long. The nation's literature in the mother tongues, Mandarin, Malay, and Tamil, have had similar historical trajectories that go further back in time; even before the advent of colonialism. As such, where do these trajectories diverge and converge? “Bilingualism” is popularly associated with a proficiency in English paired with that in our mother tongues. But did you know Singapore has had bilingual poets in the past who dabbled in word-play in Malay and Mandarin? Can we still create such bilingual literature, or even multilingual literature in today’s context? Where do Singapore's mother tongue literatures stand within their diasporas, and what’s their future forward? Join us in this special episode featuring an English panel discussion with our two guests, Dr. Tan Chee Lay and Dr. Azhar Ibrahim, organising committee members of Poetry Festival Singapore. Hosts Ayilisha and Ashwinii gain insights from them about the Singapore Mandarin and Malay literary scenes and discuss how works in their languages, together with Tamil, can synergise to encapsulate local experiences in literature.

Literature and its identity are inseparable, just like how literature and its historical trajectory can't be viewed in isolation. How has Tamil Literature been intertwined with Singapore’s history? Can we locate the "Singapore" identity in our local Tamil literature? In this episode, hosts Ayilisha and Ashwinii analyse and discuss what Singapore Tamil literature signifies and comprises, tracing its roots and evolution and also the future that it holds. Listen till the end for a reading of local poet Latha's poem, "September 11", as they also muse about the universal ideas that transcend national boundaries in our writings. 🤓🤓🎤🎤🇸🇬🌊📖

“Peoples settled here,
Brought to this island
The bounty of these seas,
Built towers topless as Ilium's.
They make, they serve,
They buy, they sell.
Despite unequal ways,
Together they mutate,
Explore the edges of harmony,
Search for a centre”
- Edwin Thumboo, Ulysses by the Merlion
In this seminal poem, Edwin Thumboo speaks about the genesis of Singapore, a city born out of an amalgamation of immigrants, the confluence of their cultures, lifestyles, and imaginations. How have Singapore Tamil writers imagined Singapore in their writings? How have these imaginations evolved over the years? Do we need Singapore in our writing to hold the “Singlit” passport? Join Ayilisha and Ashwinii as they interrogate these questions and more in our third episode of Solliladanga.
Coming to you on 13th December 09:10:11 on all major streaming platforms! Don’t forget to listen. 🤓🤓🎤🎤🌊📖

🤓🤓🎤🎤👻🌊📖 Supernatural and horror themes are commonplace in films, but how about in Singapore Literature? Many would have heard about local books like the "True Singapore Ghost Stories", and characters like Hantu and Pontianak that ‘ghost around’ in them, but do these stories also have a place in our local Tamil literature? Says yes, the writer of the Tamil short story anthology "Aah! Singapoor Amaanushya Kathaigal" ("Aa! Supernatural Stories of Singapore"), Suriya Rethnna, in our very first interview of the Solliladanga series. Are popular themes like horror to be treated seriously in our literature? We find out this and more, as we explore with our guest the 'binary' between popular and 'serious' fiction in this episode. Off to a spooky start!
Listen to 3 short stories from the 'Aah!' collection in our writer's own voice here: https://soundcloud.com/aah-supernatural-stories/sets/aah-by-suriya-rethnna-aah-by . You can borrow and read this book from Singapore's public libraries.
