If Mars were colonized, several billion people could live there. The risk of humankind becoming extinct would be halved. Elon Musk is convinced of this. Having Mars as a backup planet in case something goes wrong on Earth is said to be the main motivation for his space program. The Swiss energy company BKW took up Musk's fantasy and spread it further: "Mars – one day we may live there – but until then, Earth is our home, where we must ensure that humans and nature can live in harmony," reads a BKW commercial. As a biologist specializing in ecology, I can only shake my head at this naive idea. Perhaps a manned flight to Mars, including a successful return to Earth, is technically feasible. But permanent colonization of this planet and life there that would be independent of Earth and its inhabitants is unrealistic. The conditions on Mars are hostile to life. The thin atmosphere consists largely of carbon dioxide. Oxygen is in short supply. Outside temperatures drop to minus 85°C at night. Water exists only as ice. Sandstorms sweep across the dusty plains. Humans could only survive on Mars in protective suits and in space stations. But where would the food come from in the Mars colony? And where would the oxygen come from to breathe? To do this, a community of plants, animals, bacteria, and fungi would have to be built up in the space station to supply the settlers with food and oxygen. But that's not all. These organisms would have to decompose feces, urine, and dead organisms and return the organic material to the cycle of life. The volcanic isla
