There are many collocations with the word “heavy”. For example, if one team is very likely to win the football World Cup, you could say “Brazil is the heavy favorite to win tomorrow’s match.”

Let’s practice:

1) After walking for three hours my backpack began to feel very heavy.

2) My grandson is getting too heavy to pick up.

3) That box doesn’t look very heavy.

4) The gold bars in my pockets made my jacket even heavier

5) My uncle didn’t find the refrigerator too heavy to move.

6) Drive carefully. The rain is getting really heavy.

7) The traffic on the highway is always heavy during rush hour.

The word “heavy” is commonly used with dozens of nouns. Here are a few examples:

8) She’s a heavy drinker.

9) After a heavy meal, he always takes a nap.

10) We had a heavy frost last night and all my tomato plants died.

11) My uncle is a heavy smoker. It’s going to kill him.

12) The recent earthquakes in Turkey caused heavy damage.

13) He has a heavy duty truck for transporting heavy loads.

14) It was cold yesterday so I wore a heavy sweater.

15) It was an important election and the voter turnout was heavy

16) Visibility was poor because of the heavy fog, so we had to drive slowly.
