After 24 years, I finally got to be reunited with my cousin Mansfield at a powwow in Grand Rapids! It was absolutely surreal and so many things happened that were affirming to me not only as a Multi-Racial person, but also as a Choctaw and Cherokee woman. Despite everything else going on, I'm so happy with how far I've come with my identity and reconnecting in just under a year. It's been a beautiful ride and one I hope to continue forever.  Thank you to all of you who've been incredibly supportive and have helped buoy me through the rough patches. I am so incredibly grateful for each and one of you in our Some Kind of Brown family! After our month long journey through "When They See Us," we're going to be switching gears! Between all of the maternal feelings stirred up from watching the series, comments from a family member, and writing my children's book, I've been thinking a lot about interracial relationships. We have reached an end of an era! This is the last part of the beautiful work of art that is "When They See Us" directed by Ava DuVernay. Because most of this part focuses on Korey and what he went though as a teen in the adult prison system, it's probably the hardest episode to watch. However, his story serves as a metaphor for everyone's journey as one of the five teens persecuted because of other people's pride, prejudices, and unwillingness to challenge their own world views. Like the other Central Park 5, Korey Wise was innocent of both the crime and of the dark sides of the justice system. He goes from that innocence to the extremes of torture, but he remained strong and came out the other side as an amazing man who has more than proved that sometimes we're stronger than we think. The last 15 or so minutes of this part are so inspiring and beautiful and I hope you got to go on this journey with me so that you could see.  I would love to hear your thoughts on this miniseries if you watched it! We're over halfway through "When They See Us" and I'm still surprised by how things are unfolding. I think that I'm moving through the stages of grief with these parts. Part one was denial and anger, part two was acceptance and just being disappointed at the corruption I already knew was there, and part three has made me angry. I'm pretty sure that's not the correct order, but what can you do? This part skips forward in time again through very clever cinematography to when Yusef, Ray, Antron, and Kevin are set free and discover what life is like as a convicted felon and sex offender. I talk a little bit about our justice system and my problems with prison, but nothing gets the point across like the documentary "13th" by the same director of this miniseries. I highly recommend that you check this out whether you're in the US or not.  If you missed last Friday's episode, we now have a newsletter that will give you easier access to the show notes and any information I link in them. I learned my lesson with the first episode and I seriously appreciate those of you who let me cry on your shoulder, or rather in your ears, last week. I knew the story of The Central Park 5, but I didn't think how hard this would hit me. I have no regrets, but I'm going to be covering this series one episode at a time. I'll be posting an episode a week, so you're welcome to watch along with me or watch at whatever pace works for you.
