Government officials have always been too concerned about pandering to a base, a special interest, or re-election rather than servicing the needs of the most vulnerable among us. As a result the most vulnerable among us suffer needlessly in the absence of an effective social safety net that can service the needs of those among us with nothing or very little. No one seeking help at a minimum level should be turned away from receiving basic things like housing, food, health care, utility services, transportation, education, or job training. The current system places the burden of meeting all of these needs entirely on individuals who oftentimes lack the capacity to do so because of existing social and economic policies that place them at an unfair or impossible disadvantage. How can you allow wage stagnation for instance when inflation is pricing families out of communities they lived in for decades due to a false/corrupt perception of the appraised value of the homes in that community? The government raises the taxes on your home because they want more money, not because the home’s value has changed. The result is that they make you pay more for something you likely will not benefit from at all. If they are going to raise taxes it should be on the rich, but instead the tax the poor right off their land and out of their homes while the rich escape taxation altogether. This is a perfect example of what I am talking about. People then become vulnerable to precisely the kinds of exploitation and abuse I am trying to stop. We need a government that establishes a true social safety net and ensures the needs of the most vulnerable among us are always met unconditionally. That is the only Godly, moral, or right way to proceed.

How do you get people to care? In this podcast I talk about some of the pathologies that emerge for victims and survivors of child sex abuse and exploitation. People want victims and survivors to just suck it up. They do not want to acknowledge what it does to a person’s mind, body, and spirit. In a society where many simply take and consent is an afterthought, we are bursting at the seams with people suffering the secondary mental and emotional consequences of sexual trauma. These people go on to have pathological mental health challenges in most cases. Their illnesses often cause great harm to them and those around them. Society seeks to hold survivors and victims of severe sexual abuse accountable for their actions, sometimes against their abusers, without any compassion or empathy towards the origin of their thinking or their resulting decisions. The criminal justice and social welfare systems need to have allowances and compassionate understanding towards a person’s status as a victim and survivor. Instead they often apply arbitrary judgements when the victim commits a crime born out of their circumstances. We need to establish research to treat and cure the neurodevelopments that afflict the brain and give rise to pathologies such as sociopathy and psychopathy, stemming in part from being a survivor. Brain chemistry is altered as the structure of the brain changes due to abusive upbringing, neglect, and insufficiency. Specific conditioning results in specific neurological outcomes in victims and results in specific behavioral challenges and deficits.

I helped a woman working as a prostitute who became homeless after she came out to her family as transgender when she was young teenager. She entered into a child marriage because of homelessness and spent all the years since as a transient looking for one person to rely on while experiencing intermittent homelessness, suffering drug addiction, and turning to prostitution when desperate for money. She had been outside for four days in temperatures over 100 without food, water, or a place to stay.

Victims, Survivors, and their Families seeking Legal aid from The Legal Service Corporation should never be arbitrarily turned down on the basis of income, visible appearance, sex, gender, housing status, or any other factor. Sexual abuse and human trafficking victims, whether adult or child, should qualify unconditionally for legal assistance and full Civil and Criminal Representation. A special victim requires special representation and so do their families. When a provider who was a victim dies it leaves their family without income and places them at risk of financial devastation. We must establish legal protections for families of victims and survivors so they can get the legal aid they need when they come forward. No one should arbitrarily be turned down when applying for help as a survivor or dependent of a deceased victim who died as a secondary result of their human trafficking or sexual abuse victimization, I.e. addiction born out of being sexually abused and sex trafficked. This refusal of legal aid is happening to survivors, victims, and their families. The results are devastating. I could say so much more about this and I will in the future.
