SoonerNation: Oklahoma Sooners

Is it time for Oklahoma to make a change at quarterback?

Brent Venables has made it clear: John Mateer is still his guy. But after six turnovers over the last three games, an offense averaging just over 12 points per game during that stretch, and No. 1 Texas waiting on the other side of the bye week, the pressure is mounting.

In this episode, we debate the biggest question facing the Sooners: Does Oklahoma stick with Mateer's high ceiling and hope he finds his game, or is Whitt Newbauer worth the gamble?

This isn't about whether Newbauer is better. It's about whether Oklahoma can afford to keep putting the football in harm's way against a Texas defense that will make the Sooners pay for every mistake.

Oklahoma walked into Athens and left with a 41-13 loss — but the final score doesn’t tell the entire story.
Let's break down three things that tell us what this Oklahoma team really is right now: the catastrophic second-quarter meltdown, a running game that never got off the ground, and a defensive performance that was actually far better than the 41 points allowed suggest.
The offense has some serious questions to answer.

Oklahoma is 2-1.
But if we're being honest… Saturday night didn't exactly feel like a win.
The Sooners escaped New Mexico 14-6, but there were three major warning signs that Oklahoma can't afford to ignore — because those same problems are coming with them to Athens.
- The passing game
- The red-zone struggles
- The growing frustration surrounding the offense
The natural reaction is to say, “It's a win. Turn the page.”
But you can't just throw the page away.
Georgia is next.
And if Oklahoma doesn't fix these problems quickly, the Bulldogs could expose every one of them.
Let's break down the three reasons the New Mexico win felt like a loss.

Oklahoma’s offense struggled to find answers against Michigan.

But there was one part of John Mateer’s game that showed some real promise:

His legs.

Mateer ran for 45 yards against the Wolverines, and now the question is…

How can Ben Arbuckle turn that into a bigger weapon?

Let's break down three ways Oklahoma can unlock Mateer’s legs against New Mexico—and why doing so could have a much bigger impact on the Sooners’ offense moving forward.

- Read Option

- Designed QB Runs

- Getting the Running Backs Involved

The goal isn't just to run Mateer more.

It’s to make the defense defend everything.
