  • 015: Can a Traditional Corporate Career Be a Soul Career?

When you envision a Soul Career, you probably think of a life away from the corporate grind. But, it’s possible to find fulfilment in traditional jobs and make a corporate career a Soul Career.

In this month’s episode of the Soul Career podcast, we interview Attorney-at-Law, and Partner at Hart Muirhead Fatta, Sanya Goffe.

Sanya has what many would consider a traditional Law career. She climbed the ladder in her law firm to Partner, sits on multiple prestigious boards and recently became an Eisenhower Fellow. Amazingly, she has achieved all this while being a wife, a mother, and having a passion for philanthropy. So how has she achieved this success while still making time for herself?  And, what keeps her motivated when so many lawyers complain of stress and burnout. We discuss all this and more.

    Here’s what we cover:

    1. Sanya’s decision to live in Jamaica; even though she is a dual citizen of Jamaica and the United States.

    2. Her decision to become a lawyer and what that journey looked like

    3. Her passion for pension reform in Jamaica

    4. Her passion for philanthropy and volunteerism

    5. Her advice for other lawyers who feel miserable in their careers

  • 010: How Nike Athlete, David Smith, Stayed Resilient through Tumors, Surgeries, and Partial Paralysis

Paralympic athlete David Smith has faced tremendous odds. He was born with  talipes equinovarus (“clubfoot”), misdiagnosed as an epileptic in childhood and, on the cusp of a successful athletic career, was diagnosed with a life-threatening spinal tumor. He had four surgeries - one of which left him partially paralyzed - and had to learn to walk four times. Yet through it all he maintained his passion for athletics and has developed a new life philosophy.

We recorded this episode in January 2020, but it’s relevant now more than ever. As we face the COVID-19 pandemic, we may feel overwhelmed by the difficult messages and imagery we’re confronted with every day. It can be easy to lose our commitment to our goals, give up on our dreams and go into a negative space. But David’s story shows us how to reframe any challenge into something that motivates us to move forward with a renewed sense of purpose. Join us as David shares how he remained persistent through tremendous odds and how he went from what he calls a ‘human-doing’ to a human being.

Here’s how we’ve structured the episode:

    - David’s battles with tumors and ill health over the past decade

    - When he knew becoming an athlete was his Soul Career and how he continued pursuing his dream in the face of so many medical challenges

    - The impact of his background and childhood, and how his early experiences helped him to develop a ‘can-do’ mindset

    - How remaining open and keeping a sense of gratitude helped him to accept and adjust his life in the face of challenges

    - How confronting his own mortality revealed the importance of living in the present moment and finding happiness from internal rather than external validation

    - His current life philosophy and how he finds joy in his life.

  • 008: How Angella Rainford built the Largest Solar Farm in Jamaica at 38 Years Old

“Life is not about living a blue chip path. Life is about living your own story, and the more interesting stories tend to be the ones that are off that beaten path. ”

Many people  think that if you go to Harvard Business School and work at Goldman Sachs, then your life is set. You make a high salary, get rich and comfortable, and that’s it for the rest of your life. But for the people who come off that “blue chip” path, life is not that clear. Even though you have the privilege of an amazing education and an amazing network, you may still experience failure, loss, and being broke, all on your way to putting your vision out in the world.

Angella Rainford went through a painful divorce, lost a major project bid, lost her home, and had to cope with the death of her father - all while working to develop Jamaica’s largest solar farm. She pulled it off through grit, determination, and a touch of madness, and built a 150-acre solar farm on the western end of the island. Now she’s launched a new venture - Soleco Energy - a solar leasing company.  Here's her story.
