SOUL OF SYDNEY Feel-Good FUNK RADIO

A classic mixtape from Sydney crate digger, DJ & producer MK-1, pulled from the SOUL OF SYDNEY archives, circa 2013.

A sonic story told through music, from one of our favourite local selectors — DJ MK-1.

MK-1 Presents Malika (2013) is a deep, layered journey through hip hop, funk, soul and deep grooves, put together by a seasoned Sydney selector who has been doing his thing since the early '90s.

One of the first DJs we went out and listened to back in the day, MK-1 was already playing bars, clubs and block parties around Sydney — and he's still doing it today.

We've caught him everywhere from Caterpillar Club and Dean & Nancy's to the many Sydney spots where good music and serious selectors have found a home.

A proper crate digger with a knack for finding gems and connecting sounds from all over the place. You never quite know where MK-1 is going to take you, but there's always something good waiting around the corner.

A snapshot of Sydney's underground music scene from back in the day, preserved in the SOUL OF SYDNEY archives.

Soul of Sydney Radio 💛 Show 445 – El Chino | All Vinyl Brazilian Funk, Lovers Rock & Deep Roots

El Chino steps up for a warm-up set at Soul of Sydney's 14th Birthday open-air jam — and this one is something special. Pure selector vibes: all vinyl, no laptop, no shortcuts. A carefully curated journey through Brazilian funk, lovers rock reggae, and deep roots music, flowing from the heat of São Paulo boogie through to cosmic soul and inner-city Sydney.

This is the kind of set that reminds you why real music played on real wax hits different. From Mato's silky reggae re-readings of soul classics to Marcos Valle's sunbaked Brazilian disco, Roy Ayers in full African-funk spirit mode, and the ultra-rare Garfield Fleming doing his thing.

Recorded live at Soul of Sydney's 14th Birthday, November 2025 — open air, real vibes, proper music.

El Chino is one of Sydney's true musical treasures — a selector who has been schooling us for years through his weekly show Departure Lounge, every Saturday afternoon on 2SER FM. He's put us onto so much amazing music over the years, so it was only fitting he kicked things off for our birthday. An all-vinyl set played outdoors, wind and dust storms and all, while people grooved in the courtyard.
