SOUL OF SYDNEY Podcast #153 (2012): DJ CARATGOLD – J DILLA Birthday Tribute Mini-Mix

Back in 2012, our good friend and Sydney local CARATGOLD put together this special 18-minute J Dilla birthday tribute, blending some of his favourite Hip Hop joints, Dilla instrumentals, and interview excerpts with Black Thought (The Roots).

The result is a heartfelt homage to one of the greatest beat-makers of all time – a short but powerful reminder of Dilla’s genius, groove, and influence on Hip Hop culture worldwide.

Whether you’re a diehard Dilla head or new to his catalogue, this mix is a perfect slice of his soulful sound, laced with the love of a local DJ who has carried the torch for real Hip Hop in Sydney.

✨ **Run Time:** 18 Minutes

✨ **Mixed by:** DJ Caratgold

✨ **Style:** Soulful Hip Hop, Beats & Interviews

About DJ CARATGOLD

Caratgold first cut his teeth as an MC in the early 2000s with Canberra crew **ALIKEMINDS**, sharing stages with heavyweights like **Jungle Brothers, Braintax & Mystro, Bliss N Eso, Lyrical Commission**, and more. Alongside talented MCs like Anton, Audible, and Maggot Mouf, plus Canberra’s own **DJ Buick (3x DMC Champ)**, the crew made noise in the local battle circuit and built a strong underground rep, even if an official release never dropped.

Caratgold carried that same hunger into beat-making and DJing, eventually relocating to Sydney, where he carved a lane as a passionate **Soul/Funk/Hip Hop DJ and producer**. His mixes, edits, and original productions continue to channel the raw energy of those early days while paying tribute to the golden sounds that inspired him.

💚 Much love to DJ Caratgold for putting this together for the Soul of Sydney fam, and eternal respect to **J DILLA (1974–2006)** – one of the most important producers to ever bless Hip Hop.
