  • DJ SEB ONE @ SOUL OF SYDNEY PICNIC Sydney Festival 2016 | Funk Soul Jazz Hip Hop | SOS246
We love this summer warm up mix our brother DJ SEB ONE put together as a warm up for SOUL OF SYDNEY PICNIC at SYDNEY FESTIVAL back in 2016.
It features 30 minutes of original SOUL & RHYTHM & BLUES joints & some personal favourites including the likes of Nina Simone, George McRae, Kool & The Gang, Quince Jones & more.
Nothing but love for the Sydney Festival jams we were lucky to host for a few years over summer in Hyde Park, they were some of the nicest afternoons of music, it was so nice to be able to see generations of the same family just getting down and soaking up the Sydney Sunshine & some of the great music we were given a platform to play. This mix right here is a small taste of some of that music we used to play very early on just as people were having lunch on the grass.
Here's a 30-minute mix tracklist formatted for SoundCloud, YouTube, and RSS feeds with timestamps. I've spaced the tracks evenly based on a 30-minute mix and your note that the second track starts at 1:00.

    About DJ Seb One.
In the winter of 2011, he was pulled away from the bar in a downtown Sydney watering hole. The following phrase, spoken urgently, would set the next three years in motion.
“Hey, I’ve got to go rehearse for a dance showcase, cover the booth for the next hour and a half.”
Things have come a long way for Seb One since that night of frantic under the booth googling on an iPhone 3GS, “Scratch Live Instruction Manual."
Since then he has opened for the prestigious Dancekool Volume annual hiphop festival/competition alongside such notaries as DJ Matt Fernandez and DJ Naiki and has proven himself capable of supplying the backbone for dance battles of all styles in Sydney. Among those Seb One has had the honour of playing for include notable hiphop personalities Buddha Stretch and Loose Joint (Elite Force, NYC), B-Boy Y-not (Rock Steady Crew, NYC) B-Boy Physicx (Rivers Crew, Korea), Kumari Suraj (The Waackers) and Mamson (Wanted Posse, France). Bridging his love of music and food he further supplied the beats section of the Good Food Month "Bagels, Beer and Beats,” at Helm Bar, an event jointly held by Helm Bar and Brooklyn Boy Bagels. More recently Seb One partnered with Red Bull to provide the VIP foyer pre-show entertainment for the Sydney leg of the Rihanna tour.
Among his other pursuits he is a semi-active photojournalist and acts as Dancekool Studio’s Systems Technician. Acknowledging the need for a strong foundation in today’s budding talent and in order to give back to the community he grew from, he also assists DJ Naiki in a DJ course/workshop held at Dancekool premises.
Seb One currently reps the 319 as well as his personal philosophy, >1 (greater than).

    ABOUT MK-1 /
Born John Khilla in Sydney 1979, MK-1 aka Mista Killa began DJing at the age of 15 with the aid of mentor and friend, New York’s legendary DJ Steve Dee (founder of the X-men and inventor of the funk a.k.a beat juggling).
By the age of 18 MK-1 had developed his own distinct style of DJing, shunning the many cultural clichés of the Hip-Hop scene.
With sets geared more towards a showcase celebrating music past to present, Mista Killa is certainly a rare breed of current DJ's who prides himself in rocking good music - PERIOD.
From rocking plenty of the world's most famous venues, to being one of the exclusive DJ's for the 2000 Olympics, to releasing a myriad of mind-blowing mixtapes and singles with the music industry's finest.

We are totally digging on THIS amazing warm up set from HEAVEN courtesy of the mighty DJ JOHNNY BONES (Feat. Johnny Bones' Afro).
We knew from way back this cat understood the kind of vibe that worked at the picnics.
There is a special spot in our hearts for JOHNNY BONES, as an old friend & one of a handful of local DJ's who generously donated their time, support and musical knowledge from day to to help out at the early PARK JAMS back in 2011.

From Neo-Soul, Rare Groove, Funk, Dub, Reggae and a touch of Australian Hip Hop goodness thrown in for good measure, he certainly covers some serous ground with this mix put together with LOVE from one of Soul of Sydney's favorite sons.

  • Larry Levan Dedication Mix - DJ Spinna (NYC) | SOUL OF SYDNEY 232
LARRY LEVAN Dedication tribute mix by DJ SPINNA (NYC) - Part I
DJ Spinna Larry Levan dedication mix pt 1
DJ Spinna, one of the most influential DJ’s who really mastered the art of seamlessly combining hip hop and house music sounds has created a delightful dedication mix to the one and only DJ legend, Larry Levan.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with Mr. Levan - he was a pioneer in New York’s club scene in the late 80’s early 90’s with a huge hand in the legendary Paradise Garage which has been referred to as the “prototype to the modern club” - a club that was entirely focused on DANCING.
Check out what DJ SPINNA had to say about LARRY LEVAN and the PARADISE GARAGE below //
Here's a mix of some of my personal favorite Larry Levan remixes and productions. Many people in the dance community already understand the role that Larry had on shaping the New York club culture via the legendary Paradise Garage which lasted a little over a decade. I was fortunate enough to experience Larry's magic in the G the year the club came to an end in 1987. You could only get in as a member and luckily one of the older members on my block was able to make it happen for me. I was in my teens and it literally changed my life forever. I caught that bug...It's something that's embedded in your soul for an eternity. I sometimes hear from older members that I should have been around when he was really on fire in the earlier days, but 1987 was good enough for me. The sound system alone was something that I have yet to see duplicated. You could feel the bass in your chest. I remember riding home on the train feeling like I had gone deaf. My ears never rang again like it did that Sunday afternoon.
I grew up listening to his music mainly on WBLS via Frankie Crocker and Tony Humphries in the early 80s' and I have memories of going to my local record store in the neighborhood to buy jams like 'Let's Go Dancin'' by Sparque and I got 'My Mind Made Up' by Instant Funk, both included in this session. As a New Yorker and anyone living in New York in the 80's you couldn't really avoid Larry's work. Some of his work even infiltrated the hip hop world via samples with records like 'Heartbeat' by Taana Gardner, '7th Heaven' used in Biggie's 'Friend of Mine' and Central Line's 'Walking Into Sunshine' used in the classic LL Cool J/Marley Marl remix of 'Jingling Baby.'
Some call it Boogie, some say Disco, and some Garage but at the end of the day it's straight up good music that you can dance to and enjoy, period! This is part one, more to come shortly.
    Uno,
    Spinna
