SOUL OF SYDNEY Feel-Good FUNK RADIO

A classic recording from Sydney radio archives. The legendary NORMAN JAY on air with STEPHEN FERRIS on THE RHYTHM METHOD in 1989 on JJJ 195.7 FM when he was in town for the legendary FUNK INC party.

About the Mix /

Saturday nights were mine at Triple J from 1988 to 1993 from 10pm to 2am, primarily club sounds, but of course with my love of Soul/Disco flavouring the selection. I interviewed a few heroes, such as Frankie Knuckles (a very generous, sweet man), Chaka Khan (difficult) and of course this man Norman Jay MBE on his first trip to Australian around 1991.

NY Disco & House Power | Phil Toke at Larry Levan Birthday Tribute | July 2014 | Soul of Sydney 212

Phil Toke recorded live at the Soul of Sydney Larry Levan Birthday Special — Sunday July 20, 2014 — on a secret inner-city basement dancefloor, Sydney. Part of a landmark afternoon of Feel-Good Funk, New York Disco, Roller Boogie and Paradise Garage era sounds, this set captures Phil in peak form paying deep respect to one of the greatest DJs who ever lived.

Larry Levan — the legendary resident of New York's Paradise Garage — shaped the very DNA of disco, garage and house music. This tribute set channels that spirit: raw, soulful, and rooted in the New York sound that changed dancefloors forever.

Phil Toke is one of Sydney's most respected selectors and a founding pillar of the Soul of Sydney collective — a grassroots movement dedicated to keeping real funk, soul, disco and house music alive in Australia.

The event also featured Sydney disco godfather Stephen Allkins (Love Tattoo), Gian Arpino (Tan Crackers Soul Club), MEEM (Back to Funk, 2ser), Danny De Sousa, Michael Zac, Eadie Ramia and more Soul of Sydney family.

▔▔▔▔▔▔▔

Created in November 2009, Soul of Sydney is an independent, artist run collective who are bonded by a love of ‘funk’ based music. Our people include DJ’s, Musicians, Producers, Dancers & Designers who have come together to promote and support the music we love in this city, and the street culture around it.

Soul of Sydney Block Party is our regular monthly Sunday musical afternoon feast. Focused on a family orientated get together, DJ’s, Record Collectors, B-boys & B-Girls, and musicians come down to share & enjoy some of the music they love in a completely different environment, outside of bars or clubs.

We have an ‘open decks, open mic & open dance floor’ policy just to keep it personal and give everyone a chance to do their thing where locals can come down as our guests outside of a usual club set.

Music styles generally sit at a safe middle ground of Soul, Funk, Disco and a fair bit of Jazz & golden era hip hop stuff too with artists James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Bob Marley, De La Soul, J Dilla, Stevie Wonder, Run DMC, Grandmaster Flash, Larry Levan amongst the playlist.
