Lord Śiva is described in this verse as the chief of all thinkers. Lord Śiva, of course, does not engage in useless mental speculation, but as stated in the previous verse, he is always thoughtful regarding how to deliver the demons from their fallen condition of life. It is said that during the advent of Lord Caitanya, Sadāśiva appeared as Advaita Prabhu, and Advaita Prabhu’s chief concern was to elevate the fallen conditioned souls to the platform of devotional service to Lord Kṛṣṇa. Since people were engaged in useless occupations which would continue their material existence, Lord Śiva, in the form of Lord Advaita, appealed to the Supreme Lord to appear as Lord Caitanya to deliver these illusioned souls. Actually Lord Caitanya appeared on the request of Lord Advaita. Similarly, Lord Śiva has a sampradāya, the Rudra sampradāya. He is always thinking about the deliverance of the fallen souls, as exhibited by Lord Advaita Prabhu.

In this world, you may have a complicated life. You may think yourself unqualified. Don't worry. If you follow in the footsteps of the sages, you'll be successful. "Tvat-pāda-potena mahat-kṛtena," means if you follow the process given by the greats, then you'll be boarding a boat. In this verse, it says that the ocean of complexity, which is this material world, shrinks for those who have the process. How small ? Size of the hoof print of a calf, and then one can easily step over it. And in the next verse, Brahma goes on and describes how that becomes a boat where we can cross the material ocean but when you approach the boat, the ocean shrinks.

And Prabhupāda explains in the purport how we're part of what's called the Ācārya-sampradāya. When we come to an ISKCON temple, we find that Prabhupāda is prominently seated there. That's lucky for us. If you go to see Rādhā-Govinda in Jaipur for mangala-ārti, no doubt, one of the most ecstatic experiences in the world when you go to see Rādhā-Govinda, but you won't find a prominently seated Ācārya somewhere. If you go to the temples of Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura in Māyāpur, his flagship temple, you'll find all the Ācāryas. In fact, they're situated in a circle around Gandharvikā Giridhārī, and you can go see each one where their origin is. Each one comes from a divine origin passed down to other mahats, other greats. And he emphasized that, as do all the Ācāryas, and as does Kṛṣṇa Himself, "ācāryaṁ māṁ vijānīyān navamanyeta karhicit." One should respect the Ācārya-sampradāya, Kṛṣṇa says. "Don't consider that they're ordinary people. Consider that you should sit there the sum total, better than all the demigods put together, and not ordinary."

So we have this clear object of meditation. We also have a clear path that one may follow to walk in the footsteps of the Ācāryas. It consists of what we've been given, and those who follow the simple path strictly are the most successful.

Prabhupāda used to go on morning walks, so it's an enlivening practice. Don't you think? The sun is coming up? Feel that the whole world you can see revealed is Kṛṣṇa’s energies. It's very sweet. Shall we mosey back?

I wanted to show you something along the way. There is a shop on the corner; they have a little neon sign in the window. In Toronto, I noticed when we were there during the pandemic a couple of years ago that a lot of people had these little neon purple hearts in their windows, about this big. And I traced it out and found out where they were made. It was a movement to honor the first responders during the pandemic and also to give some donations.

I found the company that makes them, so we’re working on a little design. We're looking at a few designs to make a small neon thing, and when somebody gets a Bhāgavatam set, we'll give them one of those things. It's not that expensive; they could plug it in and put it in their window. Then, wherever we go, we can look and see if they have a Bhāgavatam set.

It would be like one of those shelters during a tsunami or anything. If anybody needs to, they can knock on the door and say, “Could you just read me some Bhāgavatam?” We want to make it a movement so it goes all over the world. We will see who has Bhāgavatam, and people will catch on that they should keep a Bhāgavatam in their house. That way, we could flood the world with Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam. What do you think?

I was reading in the Yoga Sutras about mystic powers, and one of the ways that one develops this power—to say something that then becomes manifest is by always telling the truth. One who becomes avowedly truthful then, first of all, one of the mystic powers is he's believed everywhere. It almost sounds like one follows the other, but he's indicating there's a kind of a mystic power, and there's a way in which such a person then develops the power from speech to be able to manifest things and so forth.

Well, another way to look at it is that although they're dealing with Brahma Tejas, it's kind of in a superficial way, because in this context, they're destroying things. And it's always easier to blow stuff up than it is to create something. Through the chanting of Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra, there are people who are dead spiritually, and then they come alive. I mean, if you wanted to argue it the other way, you could say like it is manifesting, because Prabhupāda came to the park, he chanted the mantra, and then all of a sudden, now there are tens of thousands of temples all over the world. Where did that come from? That's kind of hard to do. Even Brahma Tejās can't do that.

We do have to move in this life. Which direction will we move? We have to find a venerable Vaiṣṇava, somebody who has been through life and through all the tribulations, trials, and has continued to serve Kṛṣṇa. Such a person can give us that advice. Prabhupāda had lived his whole life, gone through all the stages, all the way to Paramahaṁsa, and then came to the West to teach us and gave us a process. And at every step, he knew how to navigate the world, not only telling us how to chant Hare Kṛṣṇa, but how to live a balanced life. So, we are very fortunate to have a venerable Vaiṣṇava to follow in the footsteps of.

In Govardhana Hill, we go on parikramā during Kārtika. Some days are either cold or too hot, and you are tired from the day before. And I always found that if I found a devotee going around fast and just got behind him and followed, every step, he moved to the left, I would move to the left. He'd speed up, I'd speed up. Sometimes he'd turn around and say, "Who is following me?" But without even looking up, I didn't even look where I was going. I just watched where the footprints were and kept going. And in the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam, it is recommended to find a Vaiṣṇava to chase behind. It makes life very easy, and the ocean of the material world shrinks.

Śrīla Prabhupāda kī jai! Vaiṣṇava ācāryas kī jai! Assembled devotees ki jai ! And now we have one more song glorifying not only the Vaiṣṇavas, but all the holy dhāmas. And I actually heard this song one day when I was going around Govardhana Hill in the dark. I heard a Vaiṣṇava somewhere up ahead of me singing this song. I didn't know what the song was, so I got close. I didn't have a recording instrument, but I listened as carefully as I could, so I could catch at least a few lines and try to look it up. And then I found it was a song by Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākur where he glorifies the devotees, the dhāmas, and devotional service.

What you are really asking is, how do you know if it's Krishna's plan or if you are doing something wrong? So that you may not know immediately. As Radhika Raman pointed out in his class about prayers, he said that when Hiraṇyakaśipu was trying to kill Prahlāda, one of the ways he tried to do that was to throw him over a cliff. He said, “Kṛṣṇa caught him at the bottom, not at the top.” And in a similar way, as we go through various situations in our life, we wonder whether they are providential, they are an intervention by God, or because I messed up somehow. At first, we may not know.

We may have to have faith that Kṛṣṇa will catch us at the bottom. But that’s why we have 'tat te ’nukampāṁ su-samīkṣamāṇo,' when one is able to position oneself in such a way as to accept whatever comes. This is a categorical statement: 'tat te ’nukampāṁ su-samīkṣamāṇo bhuñjāna evātma-kṛtaṁ vipākam.' Just accept categorically that whatever is happening is by Kṛṣṇa’s arrangement. And then you may come to know, as Prabhupāda in his lecture on Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākur’s disappearance day, he did several, but in one of them, he’s talking about the various setbacks he had in trying to follow his spiritual master, and then he’s pointing out, “But look, this is what it brought me to.” And he had a series of statements prefaced by, “Who knew? Who knew that my coming to America would result in this? Who knew?” And Prabhupāda had pointed out in his lecture that he had reversals. He lost his business, he was gored by a cow, he was kicked out of his league of devotees, and so forth. He was thinking back, “Who knew? Who knew? Who knew what? This was Kṛṣṇa’s plan.” So it’s difficult when these things come up, and we have to fortify ourselves by hearing śāstra and also take the shelter of godbrothers.I was once in managing a project..

A godbrother and friend asked me, as we sat down together for lunch one day at Govardhan Ashram. "Yes, please," I replied. He leaned toward me, placing his left hand on the floor. "Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead," he continued, 'is not only all-powerful, but he's also all-merciful." He went on, 'If he were all-powerful but not all-merciful, we'd be in trouble. And if he were all-merciful but not all-powerful, then what could he do for us?' His point was that Krishna is all-good. He wants to help us in every way, and he is the one person who can help us. "Then why isn't my life better than it is?" people often ask. Srila Prabhupada explains, 'The sun is equal toward all, and one simply has to take advantage of it. The sunshine is available, but if we close our doors and want to keep ourselves in darkness, that is our decision. Similarly, Krishna is everywhere. Krishna is for everyone, and Krishna is ready to accept us as soon as we surrender," Prabhupada wrote, 'But how can I surrender? How may I take advantage of the sunshine, and exactly what's in it for me?' are often the next questions. The answer is that chanting your daily 16 rounds of japa places you directly in the sunshine of Krishna's grace. A man becomes the greatest soul by accepting the goodness of others' qualities. It's a quotation from Voltaire that I often think of in relationship to that: when you appreciate the good qualities of others, they become your own. On the opposite side, when you don't have an appreciation for people's qualities and you become envious of them, it blocks your ability to take their association and take on their good qualities. It closes the heart. This reminds me also of 'gṛṇanti' (SB 1.8.36). Kuntī Devī in her prayers, uses the word 'gṛṇanti' which means, in that context of her prayers, that just by appreciating the devotional service of others, one can make advancement. So if you have great appreciation for others practicing devotional service, even if yours is very basic, you can make advancement by appreciating their excellent devotional service.

In the context of bhakti, we see in the Sixth Canto of the Bhagavatam and elsewhere, as one of the ācāryas has mentioned, this principle of accumulation of bhakti sukṛti in circumstances where one is not fully aware of what one is doing. For instance, one may hear the chanting of The Hare Krishna mahāmantra. Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī very clearly says, "yad-ābhāso ‘py udyan kavalita-bhava-dhvānta-vibhavo dṛśaḿ tattvāndhānām api diśati bhakti-praṇayinīm" (Nāmāṣṭakam, verse 3). And that is, if you hear, even those who are in ignorance of what the Holy Name is, or why people are chanting The Holy Name. Did you see anybody like that last night? How many, as a percentage, had no idea what was going on? In other words, they knew something was happening. They just didn't know what it was. So what percentage? 95%?

So those people are called by Rūpa Gosvāmī --"tattvāndhānām." They don't know tattva. They have no idea of what that is. But Hare Krishna is directly the Lord, and therefore there is a dawning of bhakti in their heart that comes from the ābhāsa—just the indirect rays of The Holy Name. And such people then can see or experience for themselves in their hearts the truth of bhakti, an amazing statement in and of itself.

As is mentioned in the Sixth Canto of the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam in the section of Ajāmila, in Prabhupāda's purport, he said, "Such encounters are recorded and counted." And so there's a little book, and it goes in the book. And Prabhupāda puts it and gives a different metaphor. He said, "Every living being has a bank account in his or her heart, and every time you come in contact with Krishna, the devotees, then there's a deposit."

Of course, we have to be careful, because we may think that it means it doesn't matter how we disseminate Krishna consciousness; it's some sort of inoculation by force. Because there is a way in which, if we are artful and gentle in the ways that we present Krishna consciousness and teach according to people's cultural and psycho-physiological natures, then their hearts will be more open to hearing and taking in, and they'll gain more sukṛti.

This worship of the spiritual master, anything we do here, we can do every day and then think, “Okay, I'm done. Now I go to the next thing—when's prasādam?” But if we can enter into it with, first of all siddhanta, siddhānta baliyā citte nā kara alasa ihā ha-ite kṛṣṇe lāge sudṛḍha mānasa' (CC Adi 2.117)—means that we should understand precisely why we are doing it, especially we're worshiping the guru here, there, and everywhere so we should understand what guru-tattva means. It's not sentimentality. It is Kṛṣṇa’s way of interacting with us—one of the many ways that He reaches out to us. And if we understand that, then our minds become very fixed in that process. Otherwise, our minds have to take dictation from somewhere else. That is: “I will compromise. I will maybe do halfway devotional service. Why get so fanatical? I should just be a little in touch.” But that doesn't last long, because gradually we become more on the side of the senses, the material world, and so forth.

So we have a few opportunities in this lifetime—for Guru Pūjā, for celebrating Janmāṣṭamī, Rādhāṣṭamī—very few. If you count them up on a clicker, you'll see there's a finite number we get a chance. So if we take advantage while we're there—to be in full knowledge while we're doing these things, and be focused on what it means to us—and also follow the guru-paramparā, what we are getting through our guru-varga… Be careful. Follow it strictly. Otherwise, it becomes some boring ritual for anyone, and we can forget how fortunate we are. And also what a precarious situation we are in too. We can lose the opportunity at any moment. So we should be attentive. (13:07)
