We know from watching sports, everyone loves a big comeback. Somebody's way down, one team's way down, and somehow or other, they pull it out in the last inning, in the last few minutes, or something like that. How do you, where do you get the strength to do that? Make a comeback? And all of us need to know the science of making a comeback, because one way or another, in this world, there are slips and falls. There are ways in which we're up one day and down the next, because of the power of the mind and the way in which this world fluctuates. There are going to be ups and downs and difficulties. So first, in this presentation called How to Make a Comeback, we talk about what's a good stance to take to begin with, and that is to follow this regulative principle. The regulative principle is that one should not fall from his exalted position. This is one of Prabhupāda's very profound statements that he makes in the Seventh Canto of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam: "One should not fall from his exalted position." So whatever exalted position you're in as a mother, a father, a son or daughter in good standing, a teacher, spiritual master, or president of some organization—whatever situation you have now, whatever exalted position you've been elevated to—it's a regulative principle that you should not fall down. So how does one avoid falling down from one's exalted position?

Every other sound in the material world is an annoyance except for the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahāmantra. And Caitanya Mahāprabhu's clarion call to the world, taking the harinām out into the street was a way of waking everybody up and saying no matter how pious you think you are, you're just in a pit in this mature world. Come out! The saṅkīrtana movement started here at ground zero, Śrīvāsa Aṅgana. There's so much spiritual power in this place because of the event that took place here, which is an eternal event that is still going on because it's a nitya-līlā of Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu. If you fall on the ground here in a daṇḍavat, put your heart to the floor; you can feel the pulsation of that first harinām saṅkīrtana or of the nocturnal kīrtana that went on here. And you can pray: please let that vibration go into my heart and stay there and inspire me to take the Holy Name to every town and village, both through nagara-kīrtana and through literary kīrtana, as Prabhupāda said that there is a bṛhat mṛdaṅga.

You can chant in the nagara-kīrtana and you can be heard for a few blocks, and nowadays a lot longer because everyone is watching it on YouTube. But when you write down the kīrtana and put it in a book and send it out like a message in a bottle to the world, then it can go everywhere. In fact, he noted that some devotees had given books to the son and daughter of one of the American presidents, and they carried them right into the White House. He said we would not have been able to take the nagara-kīrtana inside the White House, at least not at this point in history, but the books went in. So all this preparation for spreading the Holy Name of the Lord started here at Śrīvāsa Aṅgana.

So coming to the Yogapīṭha and recognizing, through understanding the philosophy of Bhagavad Gītā and Śrīmad Bhāgavatam, that a perfect relationship is available with the perfect person. It makes the heart jump to think that this could be possible. In fact, we've been disappointed so many times. Krishna says, "Vita Raghava, you have to give up this disappointment and recognize that you do have the possibility of having a relationship with me." So here at Yogapīṭha, you can make a sankalpa, "Krishna, I'm going to bring my attention to you," and that can be done.

"Yāḥ śrutvā tat-paro bhavet (SB 10.33.36)," by hearing about Krishna, if you hear Śrīmad Bhāgavatam, you become inoculated from all of the foolish ways of interacting with the world, like Purūravā and Urvaśī. If you read those two chapters, then you see what you look like when you become enamored by a temporary relationship in this world where you're writing poetry that goes like this: "I love you. I love you so." And Purūravā looks foolish to us, and so as I've said over consistently during the Yatra, don't fool around. What's the name of the artist? As Elvin Bishop wrote in his song, "I Fooled Around and Fell in Love." Don't fool around.

This coming to Yogapīṭha means no more fooling around. I'm going to fall in love with Lord Caitanya. I'm not going to fool around and fall in love here in this material world yet again and take rebirth, because I'm enamored of a temporary form. Get enamored of the eternal form. Carry a picture of Krishna around with you. Go to the temple, see Krishna. Take brahminical initiation. Worship Krishna on the altar. Dress him, bathe him, chant His name, take caraṇāmṛta, and think of His lotus feet. Go out and teach Krishna consciousness to others and see that everyone's just fooling around.

Everyone can become a great devotee, being freed from the offenses simply by one's determination and effort. Determination has the word terminus in it, which means to finish something. Finish what you started. So finish the mantra. Listen to it from beginning to end. That's really the practical definition of it. Determination and effort mean you have to fight for it. To make an effort means you can't just give in to the obstacles and say it's not possible, but you have to fight.

Māyā responds to our ideas about the material world, and then starts giving us: "You want this, you want that. How about this? How about what if I put this and that together and both of them, and know a little more, like that?" She tries to come up with the perfect package for us. Māyā can sneak into our life. Māyā means "that which is not." And for those who are awake, somebody who's in māyā, they notice that they've been captured.But for those who are captured, it's very hard to even see what's happening.

So, the first—can you go back? One or two? Yeah, how māyā sneaks in. This is how māyā sneaks in, and she's looking to get in. The first way that māyā can come in is when we become prideful. That opens the door: "Come on in." Next, laxity. We become lax in our sādhanā, in our practice, we let our guard down. We're not vigilant. Then it's an invitation for māyā: "Yeah, it's no big deal. Come on in." The third one is justification, which welcomes māyā as a permanent resident. When you justify your condition, make excuses for the way you are: "Oh, it has to be like that. It's not my fault. The dog ate my homework. The sun got in my eyes."

There are risky attitudes that open us to this peril, and here's one of them: "I'm advanced." When one thinks like that, we're opening ourselves. This is pride, and it invites māyā in. Another one is: "I am liberated. I can cut corners." This is entitlement, this idea that, "Well, I've done this long enough, therefore it's not important for me to do it. Everybody else can do it, all the neophytes or whatever. I've been here six months, so it's not so important. I'm independent. I shouldn't follow all those Maṅgala Ārati-going; they're just sheep. I'll do my own thing and be independent."

So, here's how to lock the door on māyā. Would you like to do that? All right? 'An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.' This one did come from Benjamin Franklin. I found it was rightly attributed, and incidentally, he started the volunteer fire department. So, the two things kind of go together, don't they? Anticipate there's going to be a fire, and make sure you're prepared.

So, if you change your attitude, and Prabhupāda writes in the Nectar of Instruction, that the quality of your attitude will determine the quality of your devotional service. So, the old saying, "attitude is everything," that applies in devotional service. Śrīla Prabhupāda said: "Advancement in Krishna consciousness depends on the attitude of the follower." Does anybody here have an attitude? How do you know? What does attitude mean?

Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura had this vision that everyone in the world could align with Lord Caitanya. Mahāprabhu's mission.Prabhupāda writes, "If one takes Lord Chaitanya Mahāprabhu as the universal guru and Lord Jagannāth as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, then one's path in life is complete."

So Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura saw this opportunity, and he also saw that people around the world, everywhere they're attracted to music and song. The most famous people and leaders of ideological movements in the world, even de facto, are musicians and poets. In the 1960s, it was Peter, Paul, and Mary, Joan Baez, and Bob Dylan, and others like that who would sing about their ideology. People would listen to the music, and even when they didn't intend to sing about something, people would say, "Oh, yeah, I know what that means," and they would become enlivened by it.

So the Vaiṣṇavas come to town singing a song that resonates with the desire for us to go back home, back to Godhead through their songs and lyrics, which are perfect because they're informed by Kṛṣṇa within the heart of the Vaiṣṇava, and the haunting tunes that they compose, they urge us to wake up, just like the song "Jīve Jāgo."

When we heard it the second time in that melancholy tune that Prabhupāda sings, it brings a sense of longing for a time when I can become free from the lower modes of nature and follow along with the Vaiṣṇavas, even if it says their dog, I'll just go with you guys.

How did the Jālangī look? How did it feel just to be in the atmosphere of the dhāma and with no other concern? These people coming by, they're going to the temple, and that's real life. And then that's the great benefit we take with us, always keep in our hearts. Śrīla Prabhupāda gave us this great benediction. And Kṛṣṇa is always there, available for us, just like with Vidura. He went here, there, and everywhere, and if you spent three months—I'm also not recommending this in case anybody asks—if you just spent three months and you went from top to bottom of India, you just stay in the spiritual environment without any other concern. Take a little māhaprasādam, take some Caraṇāmṛta, a few tulasī leaves, chant, hear, see The Lord, and you'll be completely happy.

So when you know that's your inheritance, you're never worried because you know that's—that's my default. I keep that in my heart, and at any time I can expand my service.Dear Śrīla Prabhupāda. Dear Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, Śrī Śrī Pañcatattva, if You so desire, please let us always stay in the dhāma in our heart and mind, no matter where we are in the world. Thank You for considering our request.

An analogy related to bhakti being the microscope through which we can look into the topic of God that has struck me in the past is on a personal level. If you meet somebody that you don't know and they try to observe who you are from the outside, for instance, they might drive around your house and maybe use a telescope to try to look in the window. But how much can they find out? They might even approach you in a very logical way and interview you and ask you questions, and you may give reserved answers because you're not really sure who that person is, if they care about you.

But if a person came to your birthday party or remembered something about you through a friend, a friend of a friend of a friend, and then they expressed appreciation for you and showed some goodwill, they did some service. Then you might start opening your mind, your heart, and thinking, well, maybe this person is a well-wisher, and after some time, other people recommend the person and say, no, they're a really good person. You should get to know him. And then once there's a friendship, you might just tell him, yeah, well, you know, I was born in Louisiana, nobody knows that, and I was estranged from my parents at birth, and then I moved to another little village somewhere, and I have all these friends there that not many people know about. And my life is, you know, I play a flute, and I like butter, you know, you might tell details, but you wouldn't tell it to somebody who just walks up to your door and says, 'Who are you?' Anyway, we're doing an interview.

At every moment, personal desires interfere without our realizing it. By taking shelter of the holy name, all these obstacles are removed, and we can obtain the fulfillment of our true desire, which is to dwell in the realm of pure love of Kṛṣṇa. In this world, no one is the special object of my affection, nor do I have the slightest hostility towards anyone. Whatever arrangements we make in this world are temporary. There is no need to waste time thinking about gain or loss here. The only thing anyone should strive for is the one supreme goal of life that is the treasure of love for Kṛṣṇa's lotus feet. So join together, all of you, and strive for this goal. Work together harmoniously with a single thing in mind and a single understanding.

Working together with the same purpose, we will become qualified for the service of Rādhārāṇī, the original reservoir of love for Kṛṣṇa. May the stream of ideas promoted by Rūpa Gosvāmī and his followers ever flow. We must never try to be independent of his doctrine. May we never become indifferent or disinterested in the sacrifice of the holy name with its fire of seven flames. In the performance of saṅkīrtana if your single-minded devotion goes on increasing, then all your desires will be fulfilled and all your goals achieved. Take hold of the feet of the followers of Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī and follow them with exclusive commitment.

Preach the message of Śrī Rūpa and Raghunātha fearlessly and with great enthusiasm. Through this preaching, you will attain all perfection. Through this preaching, you will attain all perfection. Through this preaching, you will attain all perfection from His Divine Grace Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura. We are here on earth not to work as artisans for making big buildings with wood and stone, but to work only as messengers of the Divine Śrī Caitanya Deva. Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura Ki Jai!

When we chant the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra in japa, this is a very personal matter because we all are part and parcel of Kṛṣṇa. We have our unique relationship with Him, and this is a time for self-tuning, just as you tune a radio, if you've ever done that. I don't know if there are radios anymore. It used to be in the old days, kids. There were machines called radios, and they had a dial on them, and there were frequencies along the dial that you could tune into and listen to a specific program. Are you listening?

There's a cat. Cats can join too. Kitty, kitty is doing service like kitty just sleep. Let her hang out. When we chant japa, it's a time of self-examination, where we look and see where we are tuned. So we can be tuned to, even as we're chanting, we can be tuned to another frequency. Like there's a frequency of, 'When are we going to eat?' There's a frequency of, 'I have a problem I have to solve.' The frequency of, 'My foot hurts.' There are a lot of different frequencies.
