The Personified Vedas say in their prayers to the Lord that this is your greatest pastime, the way you extend yourself to the living beings in this world. And so the attitude and the order. If we pick up an order from the Lord and take it seriously and apply it, especially the order of how to assist him in saving conditioned souls, then Haridas Thakur said, we just want to alleviate your anxiety. And Prabhupada comments there that this is the best kind of service, is to alleviate the anxiety of the Lord.

Some souls are lost here in the material energy, and we give them an opportunity to come out. And when we apply these two things, attitude, what's the first thing? Yeah, do anybody here have an attitude. Say, Yes, do your senses have an attitude? Mine do. I describe it as entitlement.I feel entitled to that. It's like no. I really think I should have that. And like no, we can't have it now, or ever.

The second is order. If you just take these two principles, two ingredients, and you put them together, then you have a perfect life following the footsteps of Lord Nityananda. And magic happens wherever you go. You turn a boring drudgery of the material world into a festival wherever you go. And it's hilarious fun as Lord Nityananda, he's also funny, and his name Nityananda means he's always having fun. There's never a time when he doesn't have fun. And the only reason I don't have fun, at a certain point I get bored is because of two things, one is attitude and second one is order. And if I just come back to attitude and order, and I adjust them according to Lord Nityananda, then fun, fun, fun - Nitya, ananda!

Nityananda is just fun from beginning to end. There's nothing to impede our fun. And the greatest fun of all is to go out as a representative, follow the order and in the attitude of Lord Nityananda, of bringing souls back to Krishna. And how much can you do that? Śamyāprāsa is smiling. How much can you do it Śamyāprāsa? Birds fly as high as they can in the sky. You can do it always. You can do it always and everywhere. That's why Lord Caitanya said 'yāre dekha, tāre kaha ‘kṛṣṇa’-upadeśa, āmāra ājñāya guru hañā tāra’ ei deśa' (CC Madhya 7.128). That means world's open for business if you have the right attitude and you have the order, and if you follow the order.

Here in Jagannātha Purī, the chief of the devotees, Haridāsa Ṭhākura —in general society, which was concerned with caste, creed, rules, and regulations, Haridāsa Ṭhākura was not well considered within the Hindu culture. And even with Advaita Ācārya back in Navadvīpa, when performing a śrāddha ceremony at the end, you're supposed to offer the prasāda to the most qualified Vaiṣṇava that's available. And Advaita Ācārya would take that śrāddha-pātra, and He would give it to Haridāsa Ṭhākura. And Haridāsa Ṭhākura said, "This isn't going to look good on Facebook, social media. They're going to put out criticism that, 'Why are you giving it to a Muslim-bodied person?'" And Advaita Ācārya said, "What Caitanya Mahāprabhu said, what the Bhāgavatam says: kirāta-hūṇāndhra-pulinda-pulkaśā, ābhīra-śumbhā yavanāḥ khasādayaḥ, ye ’nye ca pāpā yad-apāśrayāśrayāḥ, śudhyanti tasmai prabhaviṣṇave namaḥ (SB 2.4.18)—the only qualification is that one is surrendered to the Lord, and by the power of the Lord's mercy, that person becomes an exalted soul, not by some birth or social position.

There's a devotee named Sudāma who dressed up as a Hare Kṛṣṇa in Hawaii for Halloween. And on a dare, his friends told him, "Why don't you jump in the van with the Hare Kṛṣṇas?" because they go out chanting on Halloween. And being a joker or a prankster, he jumped in, and then he took it a step further by getting in the van with them and going home and taking prasādam. And it was all fun and games, and it was to impress his friends. Then he found himself on the other side of the world. He was back in Boston, going to school, and he became very depressed about his life. And then he met a devotee who had a book table, and he got a book, and then he remembered his experience with the Hare Kṛṣṇas.

So, in the Caitanya-caritāmṛta, there's a description—the gopīs talk about Kṛṣṇa as being very sticky. They say, "Be careful of Him, because He's like mango sap. If you get mango sap in your hair, you just got to chop it off, because you're not going to get it out. It won't come out—mango sap!" So they said, "Kṛṣṇa is like mango sap. He gets in you and you can't get Him off." And Rūpa Gosvāmī says, yad-ābhāso 'py udyan kavalita-bhava-dhvānta-vibhavaḥ"- even if somebody is in complete abject darkness and ignorance, if they hear "Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare, Hare Rāma, Hare Rāma, Rāma Rāma, Hare Hare," then Rūpa Gosvāmī says that even that person in complete ignorance, they get a feeling for bhakti. It awakens in their heart because the holy name goes in their ears. It dances in their heart and it awakens their sense of bhakti.

Kṛṣṇa says in the Bhagavad-gītā, a practical matter, that by studying this dialogue, the Bhagavad-gītā, which is the Vedic intelligence we just heard, He said that you worship Me by your intelligence. And if you read Bhagavad-gītā every day, then your intelligence can be purged of the lower modes of material nature. And obviously, by hearing Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, then you come to "tadā rajas-tamo-bhāvāḥ kāma-lobhādayaś ca ye ceta etair anāviddhaṁ sthitaṁ sattve prasīdati." (SB 1.2.19).This also indicates the diminishment of the lower modes of material nature in the mind and the intellect by hearing.

So, it is an instrument. You're accompanied by that when you leave the present physical body. You have a present physical body. But it's just like if you're standing on a bridge looking at your smartphone, and you drop it off the bridge into the ravine, you know, really, you're not that upset because you backed it all up. And all you have to do is just go get new hardware. Just buy a new one, and it's already there in the cloud. So, the manas, the buddhi, and ahaṅkāra—these are the three elements of what Patañjali Muni calls the cetaḥ. We say ceto-darpana-mārjanam. It's actually three instruments in one, which is what sometimes we just say, the mind. Western science doesn't really distinguish that much between the mind and the intellect, but there is a difference. According to Sāṅkhya philosophy, each one has a different function, as described. You can read about it in the Third Canto of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, Kapila-deva teaching Devahūti. And therefore Kṛṣṇa says, "Purify it, fortify it." He's saying it again. It's a military statement, almost: "evaṁ buddheḥ paraṁ buddhvā, saṁstabhyātmānam ātmanā, jahi śatruṁ mahā-bāho." (BG 3.43) "Stand up and fight, Arjuna!" Make your intelligence strong. Don't get faked out by all the misinformation that comes into the senses from information affected by the lower modes of nature." And you can do that by reading Bhagavad-gītā every day.

Śrī Īśopaniṣad, everyone knows the verse, 'vāyur anilam amṛtam, athedaṁ bhasmāntaṁ śarīram, oṁ krato smara kṛtaṁ smara, krato smara kṛtaṁ smara (mantra 17).' Let this temporary body be burned to ashes. Let the air of life be merged with the totality of air. Now, my Lord, please remember all my sacrifices, and because You are the ultimate beneficiary, please remember all that I have done for You.

And in his purport, Prabhupāda says you don't have to remind the Lord; He knows what you've done for Him. And one of the things you can do for Him is come to His hometown. There are verses in the Bṛhat-bhāgavatāmṛta—they're so touching,about coming to the Dhāma. Those who come to the region of the district of Mathurā and just visit there, Kṛṣṇa takes it personally. "He came to My hometown!" After all, how does it feel if somebody went to your hometown?

If somebody hears I'm from Coimbatore, and they say, "Coimbatore!" And they go, "Coimbatore!" Who said Coimbatore? I'm from Coimbatore! So Kṛṣṇa appreciates. In fact, there's a verse that Prabhupāda quotes in the next devotion, that Rūpa Gosvāmī obviously quotes, saying somebody comes to the district of Mathurā during Kārtika, even if they're not very serious. But if they're serious enough, or lucky enough, to get on the train and get there for Kārtika, and they just hang around, maybe offer a lamp, He said, then Kṛṣṇa takes that personally.

After Hiraṇyakaśipu was killed, the Lord continued to be very angry, and the demigods, headed by Lord Brahmā, could not pacify Him. Even mother Lakṣmī, the goddess of fortune, the constant companion of Nārāyaṇa, could not dare come before Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva. Then Lord Brahmā asked Prahlāda Mahārāja to go forward and pacify the Lord’s anger. Prahlāda Mahārāja, being confident of the affection of his master, Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva, was not afraid at all. He very gravely appeared before the Lord’s lotus feet and offered Him respectful obeisances. Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva, being very much affectionate toward Prahlāda Mahārāja, put His hand on Prahlāda’s head, and because of being personally touched by the Lord, Prahlāda Mahārāja immediately achieved brahma-jñāna, spiritual knowledge. Thus he offered his prayers to the Lord in full spiritual knowledge and full devotional ecstasy. The instructions given by Prahlāda Mahārāja in the form of his prayers are as follows.

So, in the teachings of Caitanya Mahāprabhu, He said that in the Śikṣāṣṭakam, we should take to chanting and we should purify the heart. And He said also that it avails us to all good fortune—who would like the white lotus of good fortune to appear in his or her heart or life? And this is something Prabhupāda mentions in the story of the Guṇḍīcā-mārjana. And that is that not only does one have to chant Hare Kṛṣṇa, but one also has to be careful to avoid the ten offenses.

And he says that when the heart becomes clean, then it becomes a proper altar on which one can install the Deity of Kṛṣṇa. So you can imagine that our bodies are sacred, they're a tabernacle, and in that tabernacle—a tabernacle is a place where the essence, God's essence, is installed, and it's also portable—if one can cleanse one's heart and then install the Lord on the altar of one's heart, because it's clean enough and it's properly anointed, then, Prabhupāda says, you can hold a festival and invite everybody and have a prasādam feast, that you've purified the heart and you're you've installed The Lord within your heart.

And in the process of chanting, the white lotus of good fortune opens within one's heart. Puṇya-śravaṇa-kīrtana means that everyone's looking for some fortune in this world, but it's fickle. It just comes and goes. But the good fortune that we get from association with The Holy Name is eternal and ever-increasing, and one can experience that...

Pray for Lord Nityānanda to break any of your anarthas, attachments to unnecessary things—that's a pretty bold prayer. "Please break them, throw them in the river," and then say, "I don't know what happened!"

Lord Nityānanda, is adoṣa-darśī. He's one that we can approach because He doesn't see anybody's faults. This is mentioned by Viśvanātha Cakravarti Ṭhākura in the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam. He gives an elaborate commentary about the qualities of various levels of people. And some people, they are very expert at finding faults. Even when there is no fault, they can find a fault. And then there are some people on the highest level—even when there is no good quality, they find something, they elevate it, and they say... And that's part of the declaration by Uddhava, when he says, "Who would take shelter of anybody else except Kṛṣṇa, because of what He did for Pūtanā?" He said, "Why would you go to anybody else?" Because Kṛṣṇa somehow, He found a good quality in Pūtanā.

And Nityānanda Prabhu—it's called adoṣa-darśī. He just doesn't see any faults. And He's also the epitome of audārya . In Vṛndāvana, there's mādhurya—it's just sweetness, sweet and sweet and sweet. madhuram madhuram, madhuram madhuram madhuram—there are lots of songs talking about the sweetness of Vṛndāvana, the sweetness of Kṛṣṇa. But then when you get into the pastimes of Lord Caitanya and Lord Nityānanda, it's the same mādhurya, only you have the container that's filled up so high, and it overflows and it goes out to everybody. And you see that in the saṅkīrtana—that's people just absorbed in their worldly activities, and you hear the Hari-nāma, and then they just get into ecstasy and they get carried away. So we can ask Lord Nityānanda to overlook our faults and just sweep us away in that inundation. That's kind of nice because, as it's a declaration also in the Caitanya-caritāmṛta, 'pātra vā apātra nahe'—they didn't consider where was a good place or where wasn't a good place.

Those who take shelter of Lord Nityānanda Prabhu, who is merciful to all, He is called adoṣa-darśī. He doesn't see the faults in anyone. Adoṣa-darśī means anyone who approaches Him with some eagerness in his or her heart to serve, He empowers them and gives them pure devotional service, which is impossible to get otherwise. So the process of devotional service comes through eka-cakra and comes through Nityānanda and Gaura. Without approaching Lord Caitanya and Lord Nityānanda, it's impossible to enter into Vṛndāvana. Narottama dāsa Ṭhākura writes in his famous bhajan about how when one dives into the ocean of the pastimes of Lord Caitanya and Lord Nityānanda, which are the pastimes of saṅkīrtana, then one comes out on the shore of the ocean of Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa pastimes. So, by performing vaidhī bhakti over many, many lifetimes, one may attain Vaikuṇṭha, says Kavirāja Gosvāmī. But if one approaches Lord Nityānanda and Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu in service in the saṅkīrtana movement, then one can easily come to the highest position in the spiritual world, Goloka Vṛndāvana, where spontaneous love is flowing.

When we're coming on this Yātrā, we all have problems. Some of us have debts in America. Some of us have a boss who's a rotten person. Some of us have problems in our married life. Everybody has problems in this world, but when we come here for the few days that we're here, we leave those problems behind, and don't worry, they'll still be there when you go back. We're attached to them sometimes. And we come here and we have a respite and a real vacation, in the sense that we come and we're able to do kīrtan with devotees, and we understand, then, what are real problems? What are real solutions? There's a beautiful verse, vipadaḥ naiva vipadaḥ—that vipada is not really a problem. vipadaḥ naiva vipadaḥ, sampado naiva sampadaḥ—and sampada, wealth or good fortune, is not really good fortune. vipadaḥ naiva vipadaḥ, sampado naiva sampadaḥ. vipadaḥ vismaran viṣṇoḥ, sampadam nārāyaṇa smṛtiḥ—the only real problem in this world is when we forget the Lord. And the only happiness in this world is when we remember the Lord.

So, in association with devotees on a Yātrā like this, it's a journey of the heart, not just a journey of the body, or journey of the wallet, or, as Prabhu was saying last night, a journey of National Geographic or something. And those problems that we have, in a paradoxical way, they'll become our assets. Because, for a woman who has difficulty in childbirth, something so extraordinarily painful—I can't even understand—if she goes through that, then she can understand that pain, and she can speak to other ladies who've gone through that, she can empathize with them, and they can really appreciate her comments. So that those problems in our life are actually assets, both for our own personal bhakti, because when we continue in spite of those problems, then we get blessings. We get bhakti, and they're also our asset when we speak to others.
