When I first became aware of the feature on a smartphone where you could say something and then it would translate, transcribe it. So I said the first words I said were Haribol and Siri, or whoever does it, translated it into honey bowl, H, O, N, E, Y, B, O, W, L. And I thought, yeah, I like that. Haribol means honey bowl. It's full of sweetness. So that's we, if, if we're chanting on the edge where we're actually, you know, getting taste, then it's ever I haven't heard this before. This is new. This is mysterious. It's something like fantastical, something wonderful that's happening. It's juicy. So we should endeavor for that freshness. And the way to do it Prabhupāda is saying here is do one thing, you do one thing. There was a book called don't just do something sit there. Because mom might have said, Don't just sit there, do something. But this one said, don't just do something sit there. And the idea is, do one thing, just listen. Gaur Premānande Haribol! Honey bowl.

In a very brief conclusion to today's make japa great again, here are the three instructions we've received from Śrīla Prabhupāda over the last three days. The first one goes like this, yoga system is approved, but nobody can follow the rules and regulations strictly, neither there is suitable place for executing it, and everyone is always full of anxiety. So how they can concentrate? So best thing is to chant Hare Kṛṣṇa, which is forced meditation. Everyone, please say forced meditation.Number two labeled determination and effort regarding your last question about the ecstatic symptoms of chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa, you should note that the Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra has an equal effect upon all devotees, just as the sunshine has an equal effect on everyone. But when it is covered, the sunshine has a different effect. Similarly, the influence of the Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra becomes manifest when one is no longer covered by the ten offenses to chanting, the more we become free from the ten offenses, the more the effect of chanting becomes manifested through us. Everyone can become a great devotee being freed from the offenses 100% simply by one's determination and effort, simply by one's determination and effort.

And lastly, from today, when we chant, we must concentrate our mind on the sound vibration, and in that way, everything will be revealed, one after another, the form, qualities, pastimes, etc, of the Lord. And this is the way of cultivating spiritual realization. When we chant, we must concentrate our mind on the sound vibration.

..then he says, sthāne sthitāḥ śruti-gatāṁ tanu-vāṅ-manobhir (SB 10.14.3), that from your position, hear about Kṛṣṇa and use your ears. So check and see if you have them. Did you remember you had ears when you woke up this morning? No, you didn't. Don't tell me you did. You didn't remember. And we barely ever remember what assets we have. This is like, Oh, I don't look good, you know, I don't like this shirt, but you know, remember, you're born with ears. So he's saying that's your biggest asset if you use them to submissively hear the transcendental vibration about Kṛṣṇa, then you'll come to the perfect stage. Now, my point, and I heard this from Prabhupāda, why did Caitanya Mahāprabhu say that sarva-dharmān parityajya is external? Of course, it's an important verse, and we go to it all over and over again, surrender to Kṛṣṇa. But Prabhupāda said, after Kṛṣṇa said this, nobody did it. The Bhagavad Gita was there for 1000s of years, but who said, sarva-dharmān, okay, I'll just do that, right now. That's why Caitanya Mahāprabhu came to show practically how to do it, and he's revealing it in this conversation and elsewhere, but especially here, what that means how to surrender to Kṛṣṇa. So Prabhupāda said the reason it's external is because most people can't do it from the position that we're in at the time when there are so many obligations to the world, and we feel perhaps that my practice of Kṛṣṇa consciousness is intermittent, or whatever it may be. The idea of, okay, I'll just drop everything and do this, it doesn't seem so practical. Therefore it's external. However, because you have two ears, and you can take time, as you're doing right now, to listen to the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, and anyone can do that. And this is one of the points of why it's an effective process. You can sit and listen and you can know everything. Now that's amazing, because sometimes one might think that it would require much more than that to know everything you need to know, but God has made a provision for every living entity..

The other night at Long Beach, His Holiness Indrādyumna Mahārāja was speaking to a crowd of new people, and he said he's traveled all over the world, every country, practically. And he meets all types of people, because it's that's the way he moves in the world. He meets all the kings and queens and whoever is the most special in the world, he meets them, and he says he notices that none of them are happy. Doesn't matter. They can be billionaires, kings, queens, and they're still in anxiety, but we can find satisfaction in The Holy Name, and that's the greatest victory. It's better than any other asset in the material world.

But if somebody is actually successful in Kṛṣṇa consciousness, they come to this position where they have no more impetus, or they have no more urge at all to criticize others, to drag them down, such is the character of Śrīla Rādhānatha Māharaja. And I'll give you a rather obscure example, although I'm sure you have many more from your own experience. But I was surprised one day when I was in Māyāpur and I went to one of his classes. It was a smaller, smallish type class, if you can imagine Māharaja giving a class to a small group of devotees.

But it was at the Gurukula, and I had gone there, and it was a section of the Bhāgavatam that I had been also reading. It was about the Pracetās , and you might remember when the Pracetās came out of their deep meditation, deep in the water, and they noticed that the whole planet had been covered with trees,they were angry, and they were endowed with mystic power, and that, plus their anger, they were, they would manifest fire from their eyes. And they started burning all the trees because they said, What did you do? You took over the whole planet. And I had already always come to that section and thought, oh, that's odd that they've done so many austerities. And they got the blessings of the Lord and Lord Śiva blessed them, and then they came out angry. But when I heard Māharaja's class, he didn't say anything like that. He said they saw they had so much service to do, and because of that they were clearing some space, and he honestly didn't touch on it, that the idea that I had caught on that, like, why are they so angry that fire is coming into their eyes? And I marked that, and I've marked it other times when he's given other examples. Ways in which I've had a conundrum and thought, why is that happening?

And then his interpretation is the one that includes the appreciation of that personality from the point of view of their service, and doesn't touch on some conundrum that, why were they angry. He takes the route of no criticism. It comes out in subtle ways, and you can't fake that. It's something that arises in the heart of someone who's actually attached to Kṛṣṇa and actually feels kinship with all souls and feels happy and fulfilled. It's a rare opportunity to find such a person and those who dedicate themselves by educating themselves about what is a bona fide spiritual master, what is Kṛṣṇa's instruction about how to serve a spiritual master, and then those who are in that category, who take up that service, are great souls. All of you are great souls because you have a bona fide spiritual master. And in the most heartfelt and enthusiastic way you've taken up service to him. Prabhupāda said, "You have to engage in Kṛṣṇa Consciousness seriously." And he said, "You also have to be careful and not assume that I'm over the disease completely, to be attracted to the sense objects. One should not tempt fate or think one's entitled or think I'm liberated. We should always think, 'I'm not liberated, therefore I can't cut corners.' If you stay on the safe side and remain humble and think that at any moment I can be overcome by the powerful waves of sense gratification and you cultivate the higher taste for Kṛṣṇa Consciousness, it becomes possible to stay in that position even up to the time when we leave this material body and be attracted to the form of Kṛṣṇa, to the name of Kṛṣṇa, and not to anything in the material world.

That's important because we are given a certain amount of time in this life. We have an āyu (time span), and when it runs out and there's some excuse why the body gets vanquished, when it's over, then one has to be ready for the test, the final test - 'ante nārāyaṇa-smṛtiḥ', which is the beginning admonition of Śukadeva Gosvāmī for everyone that "You should be ready at the time of death to remember God." So you have to practice it throughout your lifetime in all circumstances—to remain conscious of Kṛṣṇa while navigating the material world. One should try to have that superior taste for Kṛṣṇa, be attracted to the Deities, and not to the forms of the material world, which are so prevalent. (excerpt from the talk)

..every institution has its unique set of irrational and difficult constraints. Yet, some make a leap while others, facing the same environmental challenges, do not. This is perhaps the single most important point in all of Good to Great: greatness is not a function of circumstance. Greatness, it turns out, is largely a matter of conscious choice and discipline. This is from someone who's empirically studying the various organizations in the profit and non-profit sections, and this is the conclusion of his book—that it comes down to conscious choice and discipline.

So, we have to develop this sense of "I have to overcome my obstacles, and the only resort is Krishna." Krishna is present in his name, and when we're fully focused, we can move to the level of greatness even amidst all kinds of obstacles. He said we can find—do you remember the phrase?—pockets of greatness. Our lives may be a maelstrom of problems, but if we focus on our japa, we can find pockets of greatness, or a pocket of greatness, in our day. From that, all the other forms of success will expand. Paraṁ vijayate śrī-kṛṣṇa-saṅkīrtanam !

..but we have to have some aesthetic beauty. And the Bhāgavatam describes (SB 1.5.11):

tad-vāg-visargo janatāgha-viplavo

yasmin prati-ślokam abaddhavaty api

nāmāny anantasya yaśo ’ṅkitāni yat

śṛṇvanti gāyanti gṛṇanti sādhavaḥ

It's a presentation that comes from the spiritual world and talks about the unlimited varieties of names, qualities, and forms of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Ultimately, that's the only kind of variety that satisfies us. What we're looking at in the Bhāgavatam now is the Lord's external creation. If you look at it just as the external creation and you try to enjoy it—for instance, when I was a kid, one of my dreams was to go to every beach in the world and surf. Not that I was a surfer, but I just admired the idea. And in fact, there was a movie that I saw that inspired me. It was called The Endless Summer, and it was this group of surfers, and they just went around the Earth. They'd go wherever it was summertime, and they'd be there with their surfboards, surfing. And I thought, now that's a good idea—to go to every beach.

But ultimately, it's just an interaction with the elements. When the surfers are doing that, there's a way in which, we just read this morning, Kṛṣṇa said, "ye hi saṁsparśa-jā bhogā

duḥkha-yonaya eva te

ādy-antavantaḥ kaunteya

na teṣu ramate budhaḥ"

This sparśa, I jump in the water, I feel good, and then I surf, and I feel some exhilaration going down the wave. And people look at me and say, "Wow, you're a surfer." And then I feel some sense of false ego. In this way, I'm sort of touching the material energy but with my own idea, my own agenda on My Endless Summer.

Ultimately, like everything else, it has a beginning and an end, and therefore it's not pleasurable. But, if we take the same principle in devotional service, as Śukadeva Gosvāmī was going into here and saying, you look at the world in a different way—you see it as the body of the Lord. Everything on it is an aspect of His magnificence, His design sense, and artistry, and you see how it all fits together and how it's all part of Him. Then there's a permanent sense of happiness, then it becomes devotional service. The universal form is an imaginary form, yes, it's the external energy of the Lord, but we connect it by seeing it as the body of the Lord, as Śukadeva Gosvāmī is pointing out. It's like an external feature, but even that is amazing. And that can be seen in relation to The Supreme Personality of Godhead, then it becomes unlimitedly satisfying to the heart when we connect it.

..and if you can learn to appreciate where you are right now and all the assets that you've been given, you get a spring in your step. It's less likely that you'll be overcome by this high expectation you have on yourself, or you think other people have on you.

I personally like to make expectations in any of the saṅgas I'm working with, any of the teams, any of the projects, that are more natural. For instance, as you know well, in one of the teams you're on, I say the purpose for this team is for association and service. Do I not say that regularly? And how do you feel when you find out that's what it's about? It's just an opportunity, an excuse if you like, to have more association and more service. I find it helpful.

As far as book distribution goes, I'm just giving this as an example. Devotees think, "I don't want to go out." Well, if I analyze why they don't want to go out, it's because they think they have to perform some magic, and "What's everybody going to think of me if I don't perform magic?" So we just say, "Don't worry about it. Don't even go out to distribute books. Just go out because it's fun to go out with others, or it's a nice feeling, exhilarating feeling to walk out into the great unknown. Don't put any expectation on yourself—just go out there and stand around and see how it feels to be out there." And I find that mostly then devotees say, "Really? That's not true. We do have to do a circus trick, right?" Like, "No, I'm not going to. I'm just going out. I don't even know what's going to happen. I'm just here. I just feel lucky to be part of this." And then when everyone goes out in that spirit with no expectation, then they overperform and feel fine.

I think we can help ourselves by redefining what our expectation is every day. And if you have a coach, a significant other, or you have association with devotees that are confidential, you could say, "I need some encouragement. How am I looking? How am I doing?" And they can say, "You? You're fantastic." It's helpful for somebody to remind us of what we've done and how we're doing. So it's a common experience, and Kṛṣṇa warns us not to become overwhelmed by it in the verse : SB 11.20.27-28

jāta-śraddho mat-kathāsu

nirviṇṇaḥ sarva-karmasu

veda duḥkhātmakān kāmān

parityāge ’py anīśvaraḥ

tato bhajeta māṁ prītaḥ

śraddhālur dṛḍha-niścayaḥ

juṣamāṇaś ca tān kāmān

duḥkhodarkāṁś ca garhayan

There He recognizes there's this stage in which most people are in. Because they've started devotional service, it seems really exciting, and then they say, "Oh, I have to swim across the ocean of anartha-nivṛtti," and that swimming across an ocean takes a while. And then He says, "But don't worry, just keep swimming. Even if you don't have the power to do what you think you should be doing, keep swimming."

There sure are a lot of complexities in life, don't you think? Two people do. When all else fails and everything else will, chant Hare Kṛṣṇa. So, what if you have the worst job in the universe? Or what if you're not sure if you should stay in one place or move to another place? And how about if you got really bad advice and then, worse still, you acted upon it? Any of those things ever cross your path? One or more? More? More than one? Worst job ever? Got bad advice and you acted upon it? Or you're not sure if you should stay or go?

The solution: Chant Hare Kṛṣṇa. The worst job in the universe:the prostitute who was deployed to dissuade Haridāsa Ṭhākura from chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa—she had the worst job ever. And then when she realized that she did, what was the advice that Haridāsa gave her? Correct, ten. How about Kūrma brāhmaṇa? He wasn't sure—should I stay here or should I go with the sannyāsī? And what did Caitanya Mahāprabhu tell him? Stay on, chant Hare Kṛṣṇa, and teach everybody else to chant Hare Kṛṣṇa.

And what about Mṛgāri? Did he get bad advice? What was the advice his father gave him? Half kill animals—don't kill them all the way, just half kill them and let them writhe in pain. Is that the worst advice that any father has ever given a son? Say yes. When Nārada Muni met him, what did he tell him to do? Chant Hare Kṛṣṇa.

So, if you've got any complexities in life because of bad association, bad advice, just bad karma—everything can be overcome by chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa. Gaur premānande! Haribol!
