Sound Matters episode #082 features my conversation with legendary Cheap Trick drummer, Bun E. Carlos. Tom's had the good fortune to connect with drummer, Bun E. Carlos from the rock and roll hall of fame band, Cheap Trick multiple times through the years, beginning when I was in high school back in the mid 1980’s. Bun E. has played on several the greatest songs and albums in rock and roll history, and has successfully carved out a place for himself in the pantheon of the most original and identifiable drummers of all time. Bun E. has always been very gracious with his time, giving me drumsticks from his collection, as well as from other well-known drummers, to supporting my Musician’s Corner® book when it was released back in 2002, being a guest on my previous television show, to coming on the Sound Matters show currently. Bun E. is full of great stories and insights from his legendary career, and continues to play and create music to this day.

Through my writings and stories from the world's of rock & roll and recovery, I shiFt the conversation by calling out careless and complacent communication, bad behavior, and poisonous pop culture psychology. Sound Matters episode 081 features Tom's conversation with King's X drummer, singer, and songwriter, Jerry Gaskill. As one of my favorite bands of all time, the criminally underrated, King’s X, getting the opportunity to speak with drummer Jerry Gaskill, was a big thrill for me. I have every album the band has released, and have seen them in concert and photographed them multiple times. I was able to delve into several subjects with Jerry including the band’s book, "King’s X: An Oral History," forthcoming King's X music, Jerry’s solo albums, songwriting vs. drumming, Jerry’s heart attacks, death, and perspectives on health today, and much more. I think Jerry enjoyed this in-depth conversation with me, I know I did, even if I did seemingly stump him a few times toward the end. You be the judge...

The final episode of the "Recovery Collective" series features Terry "Double T" Turen, a longtime rock radio personality (and co-host of "Music Talk Tuesday") who shares his compelling story about navigating the alcohol fueled twists and turns of a lifelong music fan and professional broadcaster… and what it’s like today doing it all alcohol-free.
“Tom is very knowledgeable when it comes to recovery. He’s relatable because he’s lived it. When others are stubborn about the process of getting sober, Tom understands that everyone is different, so he’s open-minded to alternative methods. He has the passion to help people. I really enjoyed our conversation on Recovery Collective. Moments like that help me to keep my mind on the right path.”

Sound Matters episode #079 features Tom's conversation with Phil Lewis from L.A. Guns, an American hard rock band from Los Angeles, California, formed in 1983. Lewis along with founding guitarist Tracii Guns, who were previously estranged and performed in separate versions of the band for several years, have reformed L.A. Guns, and are once again writing, recording and releasing new music together. I caught up with Phil Lewis to discuss the band’s latest album, The Devil You Know, as well as The Missing Peace from 2017, the reconciliation with Tracii Guns, some drama with past members, Phil’s former bandmate, Def Leppard’s Phil Collen, and more. Phil shared plenty of insights and more than a few stories in this conversation.

Sound Matters episode #078 features Tom's conversation with Jeff Pilson from Foreigner, Dokken, & The End Machine. Jeff is an American musician and accomplished producer who is currently the bass guitarist for the rock and roll institution known as Foreigner. Pilson, along with guitarist George Lynch and drummer Mick Brown are probably best known as the classic line-up of the melodic hard rock band, Dokken. Jeff has also performed with Dio, and many other bands, and recently completed the debut, self-titled album for The End Machine along with Lynch, Brown, and Warrant vocalist Robert Mason. As an actor, Pilson played fictional heavy metal bassist Jörgen, in the 2001 film Rock Star. Jeff's energy and enthusiasm for music, decades on into his very successful career, is infectious and refreshing. And it was an absolute pleasure to speak with him.
