Every passionate music fan dreads the moment when it inevitably becomes clear that things can’t go on like this. The last corner of the room is filled with a record shelf and the crammed cellar forces an answer to the question of what is worth keeping and what should be sorted out at some point. For the Cologne music fan Matthias Schumacher, this time also came one day. The solution was found one evening over a beer: I’m founding a music archive!
This idea and the private collection became the “Musikarchiv NRW”. Matthias now guards almost one million mementos from the fascinating musical history of North Rhine-Westphalia as head of the archive. On a voluntary basis, in his spare time and with an uncanny love of music.
In our new episode of “sound of urbanana: Talks!” Matthias talks about growing up as a theater kid, his wild rock’n’roll years, and how the Music Archive came to be…

For some, a well prepared meal is a piece of art itself. Other people mainly go to vernissages because of the culinary offerings. Art and food have already entered into many liaisons with each other. Julius Vapiano from Cologne appreciates a good dish as well. But he is not an „Eat Artist“ nor a caterer for exhibition opening folks. It's rather the sweet spot between cooking, food critique and literature where he feels comfortable. In 2016, he founded the platform „it tastes like ashes“, which turned from a Facebook page to a printed book and returned to Digitalia again in form of a PDF zine. Since 2022, he reinvented himself with preparing snacks and drinks for art and music related events in urbanana.
Friedemann Dupelius met Julius Vapiano in his private kitchen in Cologne Südstadt, where he prepared a very classic Italian dish for them: Spaghetti aglio e olio. While cutting parsley in an intentionally dilettant way, and letting the garlic slices have a little bath, they were talking about food critique, gastro literature, authenticity in kitchen and serving food in an artsy context.

For almost 30 years, the Donots from Ibbenbüren have succeeded in doing what many bands wish for: they are among Germany's most successful bands, are played on the radio, sell out large halls and their albums reach high places in the charts. At the same time, however, they have remained a self-determined, authentic and credible punk band that refuses to be bent. Over the course of their career, they have built a large fan base worldwide, toured with superstars like Green Day and Billy Talent, and recorded Frank Turner. After their extensively celebrated 25th anniversary in 2019, the Donots went on a well-deserved break. Now they return after almost five years with one of the best albums of their career: "Today is a good day".
In our new episode of "sound of urbanana: Talks!", singer Ingo and drummer Eike talk about the band's beginnings in Münsterland, burning passion for music in rural areas, how the street art of Ehrenfeld influenced the new album. And about their irrepressible love for subculture.

Brüsseler Platz in the heart of the Belgian Quarter in Cologne - This is where our author Ole met the musician Brenda Blitz. Her music sounds - as her website puts it - like a shaken bottle of fizzy water that is close to bubble over. With her unadjusted New Wave Pop, she is considered the upcoming star from North Rhine-Westphalia.
In our new episode of "sound of urbanana: Talks!", Brenda Blitz talks about growing up in Gelsenkirchen, founding her band in Berlin and why she has learned to love Cologne as a pop city.

More and more churches in Germany are standing empty. What happens to them? Church rooms have a very special atmosphere. And so a lot is happening here: musicians and sound artists are discovering church spaces for themselves and filling them with new sounds. With ambient concerts and sound installations, for example. But electronic music and experiments with the organ are also popular, e.g. in the churches of St. Gertrud or St. Peter in Cologne.
You can find out more about this in our new podcast by our author Friedemann. Find out more on spotify or our website urbanana.de. Or follow the link in the bio to our urbanana mag.

Immer mehr Kirchen in Deutschland stehen leer. Was passiert damit?
