  • Saving Keilah 2 Samuel 23:1-13
    David was the kind of man who couldn’t, who wouldn’t ignore a people in need. And so David enquired of the Lord whether he should go smite the Philistines and rescue Keilah.
    David saved Keilah,

    DESPITE HIS OWN TROUBLES

    1 Samuel 23:1-2 (KJV)

    Then they told David, saying, Behold, the Philistines fight against Keilah, and they rob the threshingfloors.

    Therefore David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go and smite these Philistines? And the LORD said unto David, Go, and smite the Philistines, and save Keilah.
    David saved Keilah,

    DESPITE ITS DANGEROUS TERRITORY

    1 Samuel 23:1 (KJV)

    Then they told David, saying, Behold, the Philistines fight against Keilah, and they rob the threshingfloors.
    David saved Keilah,

    DESPITE THE OPPOSITION OF HIS MEN

    1 Samuel 23:3-5 (KJV)

    And David’s men said unto him, Behold, we be afraid here in Judah: how much more then if we come to Keilah against the armies of the Philistines?

    Then David enquired of the LORD yet again. And the LORD answered him and said, Arise, go down to Keilah; for I will deliver the Philistines into thine hand.

    So David and his men went to Keilah, and fought with the Philistines, and brought away their cattle, and smote them with a great slaughter. So David saved the inhabitants of Keilah.
    David saved Keilah,

    DESPITE THE EMINENT ATTACK OF SAUL

    1 Samuel 23:7-9a (KJV)

    And it was told Saul that David was come to Keilah. And Saul said, God hath delivered him into mine hand; for he is shut in, by entering into a town that hath gates and bars.

    And Saul called all the people together to war, to go down to Keilah, to besiege David and his men.

    And David knew that Saul secretly practised mischief against him; ….
    Finally David saved Keilah,

    DESPITE THE WICKENESS OF THE MEN OF KEILAH

    1 Samuel 23:10-12 (KJV)

    Then said David, O LORD God of Israel, thy servant hath certainly heard that Saul seeketh to come to Keilah, to destroy the city for my sake.

    Will the men of Keilah deliver me up into his hand? will Saul come down, as thy servant hath heard? O LORD God of Israel, I beseech thee, tell thy servant. And the LORD said, He will come down.

    Then said David, Will the men of Keilah deliver me and my men into the hand of Saul? And the LORD said, They will deliver thee up.

  • THE CALL TO THE MINISTRY AND CAN WE TELL WHEN OTHERS HAVE IT?
    Charles Spurgeon said that there are three components to a call from God:

    * A burden for the work
    * An obvious, observable gift from God
    * An opportunity for ministry

    Every Christian ought to have some sort of burden for the work of the ministry.
    But the burden alone is not evidence of a call into the work of pastoring or planting a church.

    The problem with planting a church is that the need is so great that
    a person, if not disciplined by his church, can find a place without a Gospel witness. But a town without a church is not evidence of a call to ministry

    Therefore the deciding factor has to be that other Christians SEE the gifts of the ministry in the candidate –
    Not only that they are doctrinally sound and talented enough to deliver it but that they are stable enough spiritually, emotionally and with health to do the work without creating a excessive burden upon their marriage, their children or those they minister among.

  • The Difference Between Influence and Power
    A conviction is something from God and cannot be altered. God never changes. Those things that come from Him could therefore never change.
    I am convicted, for instance, that the King James Version of the Bible is without error.

    * Academic proofs won’t change that.
    * More popular versions won’t change that.
    * Pressure from others won’t change that.

    I am also, for instance, convicted that the church Jesus built is a Baptist church.
    I could therefore never go to any other sort. It’s not about convenience, programs, proximity, popularity. It’s not about the personality of the pastor or the friendliness of the congregation. It is about doctrine and authority. I am so convicted of this that I could only attend a Baptist church that is equally convicted.
    My convictions come not from what a man has taught me. That would be mere convincing. My convictions come from personal study of the Word of God, an understanding of church history and the work of the Holy Spirit upon my conscience.

  • 2 Samuel 5:1-16 He Took The Strongholds
    So long as you do as the Word says you will find that, though you still have struggles, you have answers and help through those struggles.
    If, whether it is through rebellion, stubbornness or, as in the case of David and those kings who followed him, pride what you will discover is that those struggles that are natural in this world, become calamities with supernatural consequences; mostly for your children.
    THE CONQUEST OF JERUSALEM

    2 Samuel 5:6-9 (KJV)

    And the king and his men went to Jerusalem unto the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land: which spake unto David, saying, Except thou take away the blind and the lame, thou shalt not come in hither: thinking, David cannot come in hither.

    Nevertheless David took the strong hold of Zion: the same is the city of David.

    And David said on that day, Whosoever getteth up to the gutter, and smiteth the Jebusites, and the lame and the blind,that are hated of David’s soul, he shall be chief and captain. Wherefore they said, The blind and the lame shall not come into the house.

    So David dwelt in the fort, and called it the city of David. And David built round about from Millo and inward.

    One of the first actions of David, once he was king of the whole of Israel, was to take the city of Jerusalem from the Jebusites.

    THE CREATION OF A FRIENDSHIP

    2 Samuel 5:11 (KJV)

    And Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar trees, and carpenters, and masons: and they built David an house

    THE CONCEPTION OF GOD’S BLESSING

    2 Samuel 5:10 (KJV)

    And David went on, and grew great, and the LORD God of hosts was with him.
    2 Samuel 5:12 (KJV)

    And David perceived that the LORD had established him king over Israel, and that he had exalted his kingdom for his people Israel’s sake.
    THE CONCUBINES AND CHILDREN

    2 Samuel 5:13-16 (KJV)

    And David took him more concubines and wives out of Jerusalem, after he was come from Hebron: and there were yet sons and daughters born to David.

    And these be the names of those that were born unto him in Jerusalem; Shammua, and Shobab, and Nathan, and Solomon,

    Ibhar also, and Elishua, and Nepheg, and Japhia,

    And Elishama, and Eliada, and Eliphalet.

  • 2 Samuel 1:1-4 How Went the Matter
    Don’t you sometimes wish life could be linear? Don’t you sometimes wish you could just deal with one thing and then another and after that the next, perhaps with some breaks in between?
    Life isn’t that way. Every one of us live in multiple layers of responsibility and interest.
    With God’s help and direction you can do this.

    * Be confident
    * Be decisive and

    Don’t become bitter or mean spirited.
    That’s a heart after God’s

    Please note with me first of all,

    THE HEART OF DAVID
    2 Samuel 1:4 (KJV)

    And David said unto him, How went the matter? I pray thee, tell me. And he answered, That the people are fled from the battle, and many of the people also are fallen and dead; and Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also.
    THE HARDNESS OF DAVID
    2 Samuel 1:13-17 (KJV)

    And David said unto the young man that told him, Whence art thou? And he answered, I am the son of a stranger, an Amalekite.

    And David said unto him, How wast thou not afraid to stretch forth thine hand to destroy the LORD’S anointed?

    And David called one of the young men, and said, Go near, and fall upon him. And he smote him that he died.

    And David said unto him, Thy blood be upon thy head; for thy mouth hath testified against thee, saying, I have slain the LORD’S anointed.

    And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son:
    THE HEAD OF DAVID
    2 Samuel 2:1-4 (KJV)

    And it came to pass after this, that David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And the LORD said unto him, Go up. And David said, Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto Hebron.

    So David went up thither, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail Nabal’s wife the Carmelite.

    And his men that were with him did David bring up, every man with his household: and they dwelt in the cities of Hebron.

    And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, saying, That the men of Jabeshgilead were they that buried Saul.

  • John 8:36 For Real? Free Indeed

    What constitutes disciples indeed
    John 8:31 (KJV)

    Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
    This world is filled with people who profess to be Christians but who fall short of the Biblical definition of the disciple of Jesus Christ.
    Real freedom is

    A FREEDOM BASED ON TRUTH AND NOT RELIGION
    People:

    * Join churches
    * Do religious deeds
    * Sacrifice time and resources and
    * Keep the Ten Commandments

    All in hopes that doing these things will get them a place in eternal life with the Lord.

    Real freedom is

    A FREEDOM THAT CHANGES SERVICE
    No Christian has to serve sin.

    Real freedom is

    A FREEDOM THAT LASTS FOREVER
    If you belong to Jesus Christ – if He has made you free – you will never perish.
    Not ever.
    For no reason.

  • Proverbs 31:10 A Virtuous Christian - Sound Thoughts with Pastor Marvin McKenzie
    The virtuous woman is both rare and valuable. I would go so far as to say she is essential:

    * To a happy home
    * To an productive family and
    * To a honorable nation

    * THE POWER OF THE VIRTUOUS WOMAN
    * THE PURPOSE OF THE VIRTUOUS WOMAN
    * III. THE PRAISE OF THE VIRTUOUS WOMAN

    Your purpose, man woman boy or girl is to grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
    Do that and you will be a virtuous Christian.

  • 2 Samuel 6:1-23 Bring Back The Ark - Sound Thoughts with Pastor Marvin McKenzie
    Perhaps little demonstrates David’s heart after God’s more than his desire to bring the Ark of God back to the center place of Israel.
    A SINCERE HEART FOR GOD CAN MAKE MISTAKES

    * The value of studying the scriptures
    * The value of obeying the Word of God
    * David was not the one who was injured because of this breach.

    A SINCERE HEART FOR GOD CAN BE MISUNDERSTOOD

    * The thing about dancing
    * Michal misunderstood and despised David in her heart

    A SINCERE HEART FOR GOD WILL KEEP AFTER GOD

    * You will be displeased sometimes
    * You will see people hurt sometimes
    * You might even get hurt sometimes

    Don’t give up.

  • Acts 13:22 After God's Heart - Sound Thoughts with Pastor Marvin McKenzie
    Our subject will be King David. What an anomaly he is.

    * Such a key figure in the Bible
    * Such sin coming from a believer and yet
    * Such a desire for God

    Let’s consider each of those:
    I. SUCH A KEY FIGURE IN THE BIBLE
    Acts 13:22-23 (KJV)

    And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will.

    Of this man’s seed hath God according to his promise raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus:
    David is mentioned 59 times in the New Testament:

    * 39 times in the Gospels
    * 11 times in the book of Acts
    * 6 times in the Epistles and
    * 3 times in the book of the Revelation
    *

    II. SUCH SIN FROM A BELIEVER
    2 Samuel 12:7-9 (KJV)

    And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul;

    And I gave thee thy master’s house, and thy master’s wives into thy bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah; andif that had been too little, I would moreover have given unto thee such and such things.

    Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the LORD, to do evil in his sight? thou hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon.
    David

    * Took multiple wives
    * Refused to discipline his children and
    * Became bitter toward some of his children, refusing to speak with them

    As great a man as David was, he was not a good father and, in the end, it hurt him to his core[1].

    III. SUCH A DESIRE FOR GOD
    One of the most beautiful passages of Bible anyone has ever know isPsalms 23:1-6 (KJV)

    The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

    He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

    He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

    Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

    Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

    Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
    “I’ll tell you one thing. If revival comes it’s going to have to be from God. We’re not going to organize it down, preach it down or maybe even pray it down. It’s just going to have to be God’s choosing.”
