Born in Japan and based in Pittsburgh since 1976, Tadao trained in product design before spending a year with Japanese carpenters learning to use traditional hand tools — a foundation that still shapes his functional, sculptural pieces today.

Tadao reflects on nearly a decade teaching woodworking at Manchester Bidwell, his decades-long relationship with Contemporary Craft, and the mentors and friendships that shaped his path, including fellow woodworker Thad Mosley.

The conversation closes with Tadao's current project creating modern benches and bridges for a park revival near UPMC Shadyside, and the artistic philosophy that's guided his life's work: look at nature, and get out of the box.
