Question: Since Jesus is God, why did He need to pray?

The Trinity can be said to be one in essence and three in persons.

Essence means “very nature.” Whatever qualities it takes to be God—the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit have this essence.

The essence includes all the attributes we know about God.

The word “person” should not be confused with “people.”

Hypostasis (person) = A unique communication/presentation of the divine essence

God communicates/presents the divine nature in three unique ways—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. So, we say the Trinity means there is One God revealed in three persons (unique communications of the Divine Essence).

The person of the Son:

“The one divine person [Son], who possessed a divine nature from eternity, assumed a human nature, and now has both.”

The Chalcedonian Creed (or Definition) of 451 AD

The deity cannot share in human weaknesses; neither can man participate in any of the essential perfections [divine essence] of the Godhead. (Berkhof)

Question: Since Jesus is God why did He need to pray?
