Question: Why is that arrogance? It’s not wrong to set life goals is it? Isn’t that a well-thought-out life plan? Jesus also exhorts us to “count the cost,” right?

Key point #1: You do not know tomorrow.

Key point #2: What is your life? How certain are you that you will be here tomorrow?

Planning without arrogance (15)

The Will of God:

Deuteronomy 29:29

Hidden (secret) Will: These are God’s ways/intentions that are meant to be hidden from us and it is impossible for us to know this aspect of God’s will.

Revealed Will: What He clearly wants us to know in order to do what He desires.

Decretive Will: “Let there be light!” There’s zero pushback from the creature.

Preceptive Will: God’s commands of what to do and what not to do. Obviously the creature is constantly pushing back against these.

The sin of arrogance (16-17)

Bottom Line: To plan and make assumptions without consulting the sovereign God is arrogant, sinful, and just plain not wise.

(1) You do not know tomorrow. Are you foolishly putting off what needs to be done today and banking on the fact you’ll be here tomorrow?

(2) What is your life? If you died right now what will have been your major accomplishment in life?

Major premise: Is a person saved merely by his profession of faith or is there something more robust?

(1) Have you come to the place in your life you know for sure that when you die you’ll spend eternity with God in heaven?

(2) Suppose you were to die today and stand before God and He asked you, “Why should I let you into my heaven?” What would you say?

What’s the difference between trials and temptations? What are their purposes?

James 1:2

Trials: To try in order to learn the character or nature of someone or something by submitting such to thorough and extensive testing.

James 1:3-4

Testing = To test, to try, in order to determine the genuineness of an object.

Summary: Trials are tests meant by God to build our faith and prove that we are genuine.

James 1:12

Temptation has to do with EVIL and is meant to end in sin and death.

So we can say that trials originate with God, temptations don’t.

There is a central theme in Jonah and an underlying one worthy of our consideration.

Central Theme: God alone is sovereign and the sovereign dispenser of mercy.

God alone is sovereign= “God reigns, is in control, and is not bounded or limited by the dictates of His creatures or by the circumstances of time.”

God is the sovereign dispenser of mercy= “Mercy (grace) is not earned OR deserved.”
