With Christ as our perfect example, we are to live selflessly, knowing that harmony in the church greatly glorifies God.

Question: What does selflessness look like? Let’s follow Paul’s reasoning and take note of the four timeless truths about selflessness that are revealed in our text.

First, wine was not simply grape juice.

Second, the Bible consistently forbids being drunk. But at the same time it sees wine as a gift from God. For instance:

Third, Jesus almost certainly drank wine and did not discourage drinking it.

Luke 7:33-34

The overwhelming consideration is love and peace and unity in the church. So those at liberty to drink wine should choose not to undo in any way the weaker brother.

Three aspects to consider about neighborly love.

1. Neighborly love is action, not feelings. (8b)

Agape love means we are compelled (the “debt” we owe our neighbor) to do for others what is absolutely best for them—regardless of the cost to us.

2. To love our neighbor is the essence of the Law. (8c-10)

Resisting civil authorities means resisting God and will incur judgment (2)

We can be motivated to obey for two reasons (5)

Our consciences—being in union with Christ—spur us on to be the BEST citizens in the kingdom of the governor (6-7)

The church should not assume the role God has given to the state

The state should not assume the role of the church

There are times when believers have no choice but to disobey civil authorities

We should do all possible to be at peace with the governor

Submissiveness does not mean silence

Mankind has an insurmountable problem—none are righteous and 100% of us will experience God’s wrath at sin.

Syllogism: All unrighteous people encounter God’s wrath. All people are unrighteous. All people will encounter God’s wrath.

Clarification: There are two ways to experience God’s wrath.

I. Pray for God to bestow your enemy with divine favor (14)

II. Respond with goodness not vengeance towards your enemy (17, 19-20)

III. Do your best to live peaceably with your enemy (18)
