Romans—Paul’s Magnum Opus—is a dense letter. It is theologically rich. Some parts are not easily interpreted.

Question: So, exactly what is Paul’s argument? What’s the main idea? What’s the heart of the matter?

Romans Review: Six propositional, eternal, non-changing statements.

Mankind has an insurmountable problem—none are righteous and 100% of us will experience God’s wrath at sin!

Romans 3:9–18

God has provided the only possible solution to our otherwise insurmountable problem in the person and work of Jesus.

Romans 3:21–26

We lay hold of the person and work of Jesus by faith.

Romans 3:23–25a

Our new status as “righteous ones” is chock-full, replete, teeming, and abounding with blessings from God.

God’s sovereign choice is just that—He does not answer to us.

Romans 9:10–16

Our response to God’s grace is spiritual worship!

#2 Seek to show hospitality

“to show hospitality” is a compound word made up of two very significant words.

(1) Philo: “friend” 29 times and as “love” 26 times.

(2) Xenos: stranger, foreigner, or a guest.

Seek: Used over 50 times and most often it is translated as “persecute.”

What’s the command?

Tribulation= trouble brought about by outward circumstances that inflict distress

Main Point: We are told here to be patient during tribulation.

How God has Equipped us to Abide in Tribulation:

(1) Constantly Pray

Life is war. That’s not all it is. But it is always that. Our weakness in prayer is owing largely to our neglect of this truth. Prayer is primarily a wartime walkie-talkie for the mission of the church as it advances against the powers of darkness and unbelief. It is not surprising that prayer malfunctions when we try to make it a domestic intercom to call upstairs for more comforts in the den. God has given us prayer as a wartime walkie-talkie so that we can call headquarters for everything we need as the kingdom of Christ advances in the world. Prayer gives us the significance of frontline forces and gives God the glory of a limitless Provider. The one who gives the power gets the glory.

Law and Gospel: We must always distinguish between law and gospel.

The law:

-Mirror

-Curb

-Guide

A paraphrase: “Regarding your love for your church family—let your love for each member be as affectionate as or more so than your love for your blood relatives. As for honoring one another—be the best at putting others first.”

Sermon Idea: Like Christ, we will love our brothers deeply and put them first.

Philadelphia= “brotherly affection”

In the New Testament, it’s used either of actually blood brothers or Christian brothers/sisters. So we can paraphrase it as “love for the church family.”

To outdo one another in showing honor means just that!

One paraphrase says “Practice playing second fiddle.”

Love and Honor in Our Church: A Mission Trip Kind of Culture

Ways love and honor are evident on mission trips

1. Unity driven by the Gospel and sense of purpose

2. Deep longing to be together…especially around the Word

4. True fellowship

5. Criticism—driven by love and mission—is expected and desired

6. Grow close as a family

Sermon Idea: You know you’re being transformed when love is genuine

Love is genuine

Agape= God’s kind of love

Genuine love= anti-hypocritical

Two actions genuine love takes:

1. Genuine love abhors what is evil.

Critics cry: “What about adultery? The church doesn’t get all hot and bothered about adultery.”

2. Genuine love holds fast to what is good

“The Good” as it relates to our cultural sexual ethic is that:

1) God created two sexes—male and female

“Homosexual orientation, a 19th century Freudian invention (Sigmund Freud, 1856-1939), is an unbiblical category of personhood and an antagonist to the creation ordinance because it redefines sinful desire as something that

defines who you are rather than how you feel.” Rosaria Butterfield, Five Lies of Our Anti-Christian Age, page 12

2) God’s created order for human flourishing is a complementarian relationship between a man and woman—marriage—until death.

“Children raised apart from the care of both natural parents consistently experience lower developmental outcomes. Traditional, religious marriage norms—a lifelong, exclusive sexual union between man and woman—benefit children by establishing strong conditions that promote such care. More than any other family arrangement, marriage assures to children the care of their own mom and dad.” The Linacre Quarterly, National Institutes of Health, March 2021

3) God’s Word is the authoritative ultimate source of truth.

“See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.”

Colossians 2:8

What about same-sex attraction?

How do we respond to loved ones who pressure us into acceptance? Empathy –vs- Sympathy

“Jesus, I want to do some real thinking about what it looks like for me to cling to you, to know you, to love you and to build my theology on you and not on the Scriptures.”

The diverse members of Christ’s Body (the church) must function as one. Why? It’s how God has designed His church to flourish. (6-8)

My position: It is my conviction that the miraculous sign gifts—normally—have ceased. {I would never put God in a box and say He can’t gift gifts to a believer for His purposes.}

Comments

-It’s easy to see how a healthy church requires all these various graces of God in order to flourish.

-Just because you may not be gifted does not necessarily exclude/excuse you from doing that activity.

-It’s good to pray for more spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 12:31)

The goal is a mature, healthy body. Why? Healthy bodies flourish. Healthy bodies reproduce! Paul expounds on this in Ephesians 4:

Ephesians 4:11–16

“We are Christ’s body on the earth—one though many members—with diverse gifts that are endowed to us by the grace of God. God has given talents to all people but He has given us grace gifts. He has equipped us to flourish in completing the task He’s assigned to us. Therefore, as we are living our lives, make disciples of all the people groups around the world, baptizing them in the name of our triune God, teaching them how to live God’s way—and God will supply His presence with us until Jesus returns for His church.”

In light of those truths, here’s the question I promised:
