Election: God’s election of people to salvation is His eternal and sovereign choice of them to be His adopted children, not because of any foreseen merit or obedience on their part. Rather, the faith and obedience by which they, in time, enter into salvation through Christ are the result of election, not the cause of it.

Two Objections to Election:

1. Election is not fair

2. Election is not rational

Effectual call: Those whom God has predestinated unto life, He is pleased in His appointed, and accepted time, effectually to call, by His Word and Spirit, out of that state of sin and death in which they are by nature, to grace and salvation by Jesus Christ; enlightening their minds spiritually and savingly to understand the things of God; taking away their heart of stone, and giving to them a heart of flesh; renewing their wills, and by His almighty power determining them to that which is good, and effectually drawing them to Jesus Christ; yet so as they come most freely, being made willing by His grace.

1. Psalm 25 is a poem.

2. The Psalms served as the songbook of the worshipping people of God.

3. About half of the Psalms were written by David.

Context: This is the lament—the heartfelt cry—of a desperate soul that is surrounded and pressed down by his enemies.

1. The Desperate Soul’s Posture: Humble Submission

2. The Desperate Soul’s Cry: Affliction, distress, and heartache

3. The Desperate Soul’s Pleas: Lead, guard, and deliver

4. The Balm for the Desperate Soul: God’s unchanging nature

Application

1. Our sorrow reminds us of our sin. Our sin drives us to the feet of Jesus.
