The football season is most definitely back. The rollercoaster ride that is following Saints is here, and we experienced it all this week. Our emotions followed the team up and down as Saints lost to Arsenal in disappointing fashion, keeping the home form intact, and then went on the road to HAND Watford a defeat and take all three points back to St. Mary’s.

Saints now sit on 40 points. Closer to 7th than 17th (though other teams have games to come later this week), and we can be relatively confident in how the team responded to the performance against Arsenal.

This week I am joined by two guests, Chris Hutchings spoke with me on Friday morning to relive Arsenal and talk about the experience of being in the ground when then doors are closed and seeing Premier League football without a crowd. We also discuss the match, which wasn’t that great. Luckily, Chris is. You can follow him on Twitter @HutchFM.

I then caught up with Jay Grant who runs the partner page of the show, the Southampton Page, on Twitter and Instagram. We had the pleasure of reliving the win at Watford, the performance of some of the rotated players, and we also discussed what we expect to see against City. We recorded on the final whistle and were, understandably, excited. At least we finished on a high!

A three-month layoff might have been just what Danny Ings and company needed as Saints began Project Restart with an emphatic 0-3 win at Carrow Road. Southampton began slowly but grew into the game, and from the first hydration break on it was all Saints.

We made it, mostly. Only a few more days until Saints return to action, albeit in an empty stadium and in different circumstances than normal. So, since we recorded this week’s show a lot has happened. Ralph’s due to sign a new contract extension and project restart is inching ever closer to bringing football back to us. In larger news, We saw demonstrations by players in the Bundesliga, and protests have gone on for days around the US, with things turning violent in several instances. 

Steve Forbes, matchday presenter at Southampton FC, joins me this week. We discuss, among other things, his journey to the job, what it looks like, how he went from selling mobile phones and working in call centers to quarreling with Sammy and taking charge of the halftime relay, while still making time to cook, present the news, and entertain us all while he’s doing it.

It’s not very often that most of us get to speak to former professionals. Some are public figures in broadcasting or coaching, some move on to other careers, and some slip away from the crowds and make a life for themselves with their families. Those that are public often seem, at least to me, unreachable. You can see them, you may even say hello, but to actually sit down and have a chat is not something most of us will get the chance to do.

John, of the Saints FC Podcast, has managed to track down several former pros for the podcast, and I truly enjoy those episodes because I learn so much about the team and the players of the time, a time before I began following the red and white stripes, before I began singing “Oh When the Saints” at 4:00am most Saturdays before I began calling it football. For that reason, I feel especially honored to have had the chance to speak with former Saints and Finland goalkeeper Antti Niemi. If you have been a fan of Saints since the early 2000s then you will know Antti. The blonde-haired shot-stopper is a fan favorite remembered for his cat-like reflexes and acrobatic saves in goal. 

But, prior to doing this interview with him, I didn’t really know him at all. So, in the very short time between learning about the opportunity and actually speaking with him, I enjoyed learning about him and his career, watching highlight videos, and reading up on other interviews he had done. My hope is that the interview is slightly different than what he would have been asked elsewhere. I didn’t want to do the same old interview, but I hope the interview I did is enjoyed by whoever listens. There are so many other people out there probably better suited to do this interview, but I am grateful for the chance to speak to such a thoughtful, talented, kind and hardworking person.

Antti is still active in football. In addition to coaching for Finland he likes to spend time fishing and with his family.

For the last few weeks, it’s been a mixture of confusion and uncertainty, and even with the PL’s announcement of potentially resuming on June 1st, it’s still largely that way. Until we know more, we’ll just stay alert.

This week we’re avoiding most of that and diving into trips to the Dell, Ferry rides, keeping up with Saints from abroad before the internet was a thing, cup finals won and lost, and more with Graham Copp. Graham is a lifelong Saints fan from the Isle of Wight and who now lives near Washington DC. He’s written for the Ugly Inside and seen Saints up and down England and in the US. It was a real pleasure to be able to chat with him about his memories of the team, and just reflect and reminisce on some of the moments he’s enjoyed (and some of those he didn’t) for a while.

This week the Coronavirus took one of our SaintsFC family members. Mark Channon lost his life to the disease just days ago. Our thoughts go out to his partner, child and the rest of his family and loved ones. Additionally, his family has asked that any donations you wish to make go to the NHS.  

Tom Mason spent a lot of this year covering Bristol Rovers while at University. With in-person sessions at school being called off, and football not taking place, he was able to come on the show this week and chat about everything from League 1 finances to the 4-0 pasting Saints lead on the team down the road.
