We are joined by author and martial artist John Vercher to discuss his book Three-Fifths, what it means to pass in a racial context, the history of the One-Drop and Three-Fifths rules, the often overlooked spectrum of white supremacy, and then we talk about John's new book which is centered around the world of MMA.

We talk with martial arts trainer Jacky about their queer self-defense project that offers free self-defense and MMA classes to the queer and trans community. We also discuss how Brazilian jiu-jitsu is similar to but also different from such activities as parkour and skateboarding. We also dive into the challenges and benefits of starting your own training collective as a novice. Lastly, we discuss the main card of UFC 250.
The queer perspective on MMA is one that is nonexistent in the discourse, which is why you need to listen to this episode. You might just find our discussion is better than most of the other ways MMA is presented.

This was Tyron Woodley's first fight back since his lopsided title loss to Kamaru Usman. A surging Gilbert Burns showed the defeat to Usman wasn't a fluke but more about a winning formula against Woodley.

As a nice break from the pandemic, storyteller and creator Sapphire Sandalo is on the show to tell us some of her favorite spooky stories, about how collecting scary stories from the Philippines made her more aware of colonization and its lasting effects on the psyche, being a YouTuber and creator, and what she's doing differently for her new show "Stories With Sapphire." We also explore the feedback loop creators can fall into, and how not to be #basic.

In this dense episode, we speak with MMA pioneer, grappling legend, and political radical Jeff 'The Snowman' Monson. Unlike what you might expect, Jeff's politics didn't come from reading theory but rather as a direct result from his accomplishments in wrestling and combat sports, as well as his years in social work. He was like many Americans, in a bubble. Through his work and especially through his travels as a competitor, he saw the suffering of marginalized people that he was previously unaware of. This broke him down emotionally and spiritually. But knowing what you know now, do you pretend nothing has changed or do you accept what you saw and the responsibility that comes with it? A lot of that depends on how much empathy you have. Radical politics is just empathy, knowledge, and responsibility.

Strawweight is a division that has no counterpart in men's MMA. This is why this has become the most competitive and iconic division in all of women's MMA. Today we discuss the instant classic that was Claudia Gadelha vs. Angela Hill and how this fight helped both of their careers.
