FREEDOM

The ability to make choices

Freedom without accountability is called tyranny.

The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:  “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.

He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”

Freedom: Experiencing life as 

How do we experience the freedom that we all long for – life as it’s meant to be?

“Free to be me” sounds good in theory…

- We all have lines

Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

“But we are descendants of Abraham,” they said. “We have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean, ‘You will be set free’?”

Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave of sin.”

Missing-the-Mark

“A slave is not a permanent member of the family, but a child is part of the family forever. So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.”

Consequences are tied to choices. 

All of us submit to something.

Life without any lines is harmful

- We all have lines

A world full of different lines, naturally creates chaos, conflict, and harm in our lives.

“Free to be me” sounds good in theory… reality reveals it has terrible consequences.

Limited – we know

Who should we trust to make the lines in our lives to we don’t hurt ourselves and others?

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. – Jesus of Nazareth

I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. – Jesus of Nazareth

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. Matthew 11:28-30 NIV

Not every voice is “for you”

I cried out and no one answered

Honesty is an act of faith…

His faithful love endures forever…

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good!

Give thanks to him who alone does mighty miracles.

Give thanks to him who made the heavenly lights—

Give thanks to him who killed the firstborn of Egypt.

He acted with a strong hand and powerful arm.

Give thanks to him who parted the Red Sea.

but he hurled Pharaoh and his army into the Red Sea.

Give thanks to him who led his people through the wilderness.

He killed powerful kings—

Sihon king of the Amorites,

God gave the land of these kings as an inheritance—

and special possession to his servant Israel.

He saved us from our enemies.

He gives food to every living thing.

“The love that is available to you is not limited to the love you know or the love that conditioned you. The love available to you is limitless.” -sah d’simone

Reverence

Our God is Love

Our God is Powerful

Give thanks to him who made the heavenly lights—

Our God is Deliverer

but he hurled Pharaoh and his army into the Red Sea.

You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us

Our God is Provider

Religion: I do because I’ve been done for.

Am I laboring to earn what’s already been given?

How can I show the love of God?

COMPARISON

Comparing ourselves to others is a direct path to unhappiness.  

Our comparison with others is never accurate since we have different needs and personalities.

Comparing ourselves with others can make us focus on the wrong things and turns into an unhealthy competition.

Comparison is a game everyone plays, but nobody wins!

We are often our own worst enemy when it comes to finding contentment

Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything.

I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little.

For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.

If comparison happens naturally, how do we avoid becoming discontented and dysfunctional?

Later, Jesus appeared again to the disciples beside the Sea of Galilee.

When they got there, they found breakfast waiting for them—fish cooking over a charcoal fire, and some bread.

Peter turned around and saw behind them the disciple Jesus loved—the one who had leaned over to Jesus during supper and asked, “Lord, who will betray you?”

Peter asked Jesus, “What about him, Lord?”

Jesus replied, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? As for you, follow me.”

Contentment comes from realizing God’s grace is an undeserved gift given freely to us and others.

1. Coveting leads to chasing the things wrongly 

When comparison strikes, choosing to celebrate God’s undeserved goodness and grace in our lives and in others leads to contentment.

I want the life of Jesus…

Confusing comfort for contentment will make us miserable.

How do we let go of the unfair expectation that comfort equals contentment?

We are often our own worst enemy when it comes to finding contentment

I’ll be satisfied when my life is “filled more” with

How do we get unconfused about comfortable equaling contentment?

Jesus gave up the most comfort ever…

Your attitude should be the kind that was shown to us by Jesus Christ, who though he was God, did not demand and cling to his rights as God…

…but laid aside his mighty power and glory, taking the disguise of a slave and becoming like men. And he humbled himself even further, going so far as actually to die a criminal’s death on a cross.

Jesus gave up the comfort of:

And he said, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.”

Then he said to them all:

For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.

Contentment doesn’t come from comfort, but from connection and purpose.

He rewards those who diligently seek Him.

I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.  Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame.

Psalm 34:4-5

Who/what are you seeking after?

Fear of the Lord provides provision.

Taste and see the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.  Fear the Lord, you his holy people, for those who fear him lack nothing.

The lions may grow weak and hungry, but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.

John 16: 33- “In this world you will have trouble…”

Psalm 77: 1-9

I cried out to God for help. I cried out to God to hear me. 

When I was in distress, I sought the Lord. 

At night I stretched out untiring hands, and I would not be comforted. 

I remembered you, God, and I groaned. 

I meditated, and my spirit grew faint. 

You kept my eyes from closing, I was too troubled to speak. 

I thought about the former days, the years of long ago. 

I remembered my songs in the night. 

My heart meditated and my spirit asked: 

“Will the Lord reject forever?

Will he never show his favor again?

Has his unfailing love vanished forever?

Has his promise failed for all time?

Has God forgotten to be merciful?

Has he in anger withheld his compassion?”

Pain can make us believe the lie that God is not good.

1. Be honest with God and with others.

2. Pray and ask for help. 

3.Remember God’s deeds and promises. 

There is nothing we can do to make God love us less. 

My circumstances are not the mark of God’s goodness- the cross is.

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!

Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, 

by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. 

Even when we believe the worst of Him, He gives His best for us. 

Psalm 77: 10-16, 18-19

Then I thought, “To this I will appeal:

The years when the Most High stretched out his right hand.

I will remember the deeds of the Lord, yes, 

I will remember your miracles of long ago. 

I will consider all your works and meditate on all your mighty deeds.” 

Your ways, God, are holy. 

What god is as great as our God?

You are the God who performs miracles;

You display your power among the peoples. 

With your mighty arm you redeemed your people,

The descendants of Jacob and Joseph. 

The waters saw you, God, 

The water saw you and writhed; 

The very depths were convulsed…

The earth trembled and quaked. 

Your path led through the sea, 

Your way through the mighty waters,

Though your footprints were not seen. 

You led your people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron. 

Sometimes the healing comes in Heaven, not on earth. 

We can trust God’s character. Not our circumstances. 

Pain can make us believe the lie that God is not good. My circumstances are not the mark of God’s goodness—the cross is.

John 16:33- “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world!”

“A feeling of satisfaction”

Having peace and hope in the moment, regardless of the moment

I’ll be satisfied when my life is “filled more” with _________________

Contentment doesn’t come from consumption.

How do we get rid of the default habit of dissatisfaction that destroys our hope for contentment?

One of them, when he saw that he was healed, came back to Jesus, shouting, “Praise God!” He fell to the ground at Jesus’ feet, thanking him for what he had done. This man was a Samaritan.

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
