Good morning, church. Welcome. When you preach the Bible, the whole Bible and nothing about the Bible. So help me, God, you You cover all sorts of parts of the Bible you’ve never heard of. Today is one of those parts. Very obscure moment in your Bible on obscured passage. You’ve never heard of the story of David and Goliath. You’ve never heard of this story before, but that’s fine. I will try to unpack and talk you through that section of the Bible with you, if that’s all right. But just all seriously, um, today will be good. I am, uh I’m looking forward to this, but let’s let’s pray. Well, let’s get in. This should be It should be encouraging to me, at least. Let’s pray. Lord, I thank you for today. I thank you for thank you, Jesus for your church and what you’re doing in your church and how you’re leading and growing and building your church. Ask that you just really give us wisdom as we look at your word. Today I prayed. You just really instruct us as a congregation, I prayed You just really help our collective spirits to being printed by this Chapter 17. The first Samuel, I ask that you were just really instruct our soul. Um, in all these topics we’re looking at today, I thank you that whatever is worthwhile, you will redeem and you’ll drive it home to the heart, to your church. Whatever is worthless. Separate. Just help it toe run off their mind. And they would not focus on Lord, we commit this time to you in Jesus name. Amen. All right, so this matters. This matters in all seriousness to our lives. This story does matter of David and life if you’re Christian or not, if you’ve been around Christianity a long time or this is like a nostalgic, you know, felt bored Sunday school memory. We’re going thio as a young boy, young girl, or if this is, uh, some completely foreign story to you. Um, if some of you might think it’s a legend, a myth tale, a fable. But for most. But this story happened, you could go to this place and go to this valley and see where the armies were in camps on either side of this valley one. But regardless of before we get to the story, I familiarity sets you up for disadvantage. You tend to overlook things. You’ve heard it before. Like I know where he’s going. Jesus, manger. No room in the end, you just kind of you go on autopilot. So I’m gonna try toe, not summarize the way I normally would do It passes before we jump into it. I’m gonna just try toe share this story with you this morning with some fresh eyes, and I’m gonna attempt to make it add some color to it and make it fun for you. Aziz, we learn what God is teaching the church. But I know it’s a familiar to many of you, but I think we can We can work through that. I’m going to get this summer because it can kind of take the tension that the story builds. It takes the wonder and the shocking on the story. It just kind of e think it’ll be good. I so first Samuel 17 as we look at this, eso won. This is setting in a place you can go to your YouTube it and look at videos with this valley that we’re talking about. In the first three verses of first Samuel, 17 but on one hill about as tall as those oak trees. Branches is, uh, one part of this mountain little little Foothill range, and the other side of the valley is another as tall as those oak trees that you drive out of when you leave the parking lot. There’s these two mountain ravine mountain ravine foothill things where the Army’s encamped and there’s a strategic location that they’re on. It’s a very fertile valley in a very agricultural based economy that just there’s a lot of water flowing in this area with that creek, and they’re just natural water rainfall they had. But geography wise, there’s a very strategic location because it was like a choke point for trade. Trade would go in and out of this v…

morning and Happy Valentine’s Day. So we get some of these sound issues worked out. You know, it is so cold. I’m glad that we have the opportunity to offer this live stream to you all. So that way you can stay warm and cozy and safe and not have to venture out in the snow and cold and that kind of thing. It’s so great that you know the past, we probably would have just canceled. But now we have the opportunity to still continue on in God’s word together here today in First Samuel, Chapter 16. So what I want you to do because I want you to grab your Bible. If you’re at home there and you’re watching, grab your Bible because we need Thio. Be going through first name of Chapter 16 this morning, and so make sure to turn to that as I do the introduction here. So it is Valentine’s Day, and with Valentine’s Day comes all kinds of imagery, right? You have lots of imagery about flowers and hearts. I’m wearing a red shirt today because it’s Valentine’s Day, right, and you have a lot of things centered on the heart, you know, hearts, air everywhere there’s there’s pink and there’s red and and, uh, and hearts are everywhere. And there’s this concept that people talk about giving their hearts away, uh, giving their hearts to the the loved one. Be my valentine. I give you my heart. All those kinds of things were all centered around Valentine’s Day. You have interlocked heart necklaces. You know that companies advertised by this on Valentine’s Day. You have all kinds of things like that, right? You have this concept of loving someone with all of your heart and those air words in the English language that we use to describe loving someone with everything that we have to the very core of our being. So the heart. We often use the heart as a way to describe all of our emotions, all of our desires, all of our focus, all of our being, everything. Every part of us it rise wrapped up in saying, I give my heart to you or to this other person, and that’s, you know, all of their emotions, all of all of everything. Your heart is what really things you really value. It’s what you truly believe, and it guides your actions, okay. And what’s wild is this morning. First Samuel, Chapter 16 and the chapters before is really, um, it’s It’s like talking about the heart, and that’s kind of the central theme. And so we see through this life of Saul in the life of David, what God really is looking for and what he is looking for is men and women whose hearts are completely yielded to God. You have Saul, who outwardly looks like a king who’s tall and strong and handsome. You have David, who is this young man, but the key difference between the two men and we see it very clearly as you read through the story. It resides in their heart, and that’s what God chooses to highlight and identify Through these passages is the heart, and we will see that. So let’s pray, and we will begin to read. Will read this chapter together. Well, I do pray that you would help us this morning to understand your word. Help us Thio. Focus on this topic of the heart and that we would be men and women who are completely and totally surrendered to you to be your servants, to be fierce servants. Lord, who do your bidding in your will whose hearts are completely yours in Jesus name. Amen. Okay, so turn with me to first statement, Chapter 16. We don’t know how much time had passed from when Samuel had informed saw that God had rejected him and had thorn the kingdom from him right before this, at the end of chapter 15, there’s this scene that happens, and Saul disobeys God, God lets him know. Hey, we are I’m taking this kingdom away from you. And he grabs onto sandals, robe and his robe tears. And Samuel says, just as this Rob is torn. So God is tearing away this kingdom from you. So Saul knows it. He…

  • Rise & Fall
Good morning. Welcome. Thanks for coming. Thanks for brazen the snow. It sure seems like we get our winter snow face game faces on As winter progresses our threshold for inclement weather driving seems toe get lower as the year goes on So if the first snow of the year, just everything shuts down. But as the year goes on, we just kinda seem to soldier through, So welcome. Thank you for coming. Thanks for joining us on the livestream. It’s good to be a few this morning. Um, today we are we’re looking at we’re looking at a lot of things we’re looking at. Leadership is one of the main themes that air flowing through these four chapters. We’re we’re playing a little catch up, trying to catch up to what we’re supposed to be so that we can finish Samuel in light of before Easter so you can start a new Siri’s post Easter. And so I am gonna take us on a Samuel plane. We’re all gonna enter the plane. We’re gonna fly over four chapters of your Bible at a pretty decent clip if you’ve looked ahead thes air some long chapters and so we’re gonna we’re gonna book it through some of these. I’m gonna do some summary of what’s going on and pull out some Some, uh, points we can dwell on as a congregation. We’re gonna land the Samuel plane and get out. Look around. Kick the tires, get back into the plane and fly over summarizing some of these passages. These four chapters. So thank you for coming. Our our title today is rises and Falls. We see the rise of Saul King Saul. We see the fall of King Saul throughout this chapter. I know John Maxwell, a famous leadership, uh, teacher has said that everything rises and falls on leadership. That’s very true. And these four chapters as we look at these chapters. So before we dig in and keep going forward, let’s let’s pray and let zlook to the Lord redeem this time to make it worthwhile. So bow your heads with me Let’s pray Got a got a heavenly father Jesus. Thank you for what you’re doing in our life. Thank you for what you’re doing in our life is a church on the on the snowy, super cold Super Bowl. Sunday I ask that you just really redeem Samuel. This these four chapters in our lives make it worthwhile. Make it make the lessons that you want us to learn the lessons you want to teach us. As me as one of the pastors toe all of us, sort of, uh, the brothers and sisters and lords you look at your word together approach is just really pushed. Deepened our souls into the cracks of our souls, Pushing some lessons today that you want to teach us through the your word through your spirit. Thank you for your work. Today I prayed. You just redeem it. Anything that’s just worthless, helping to just roll off our backs and not stick, but anything that is worth While I prayed to just really helping to stick in our minds, we commit this time to you. God in Jesus name. Amen. Okay, so today’s passage pick up in first Samuel, Chapter 12th. It starts off of Ah, farewell address. I worked in corporate America before working here with solar church. I had some men who and women who spent 40 some years of their life 50 years of their life working in corporate America. And you know this sheet cake people are eating a piece of cake and I worked in supply chain. So there’s some brash speak it like it is kind of people on. There’ll be some colorful comments made upper management or management or their peers, and they’re about to leave. You know, no one could do anything. They roast a few people, eat their cake and go retire. And so we pick up in first Samuel, Chapter 12, with, uh, with a little bit of that, Saul is clear. In his mind. Samuel is clearing his mind talking to the elders of Israel. It’s a farewell retirement speech. He talked about what I did wrong. Where did I fail? He asked them that question. It’s kind of like an employe…

  • Terrible Trade
Good morning. Thanks for coming. It’s good to see you all. Coffee will be good churches good the last few months, but it’s even better of coffee. So thank you for grinding through this without some just to give you a little heads up. High level we are. This is a workbook that’s in the resource library. Terrorist named, which is wonderful. That is out there in the library. Um, if you need one of these, grab one of these. We’re gonna play a little catch up this week and next week. We had a guest preacher a few weeks ago and we told him, brother, share whatever on your heart. Just share the word of whatever is on your heart. And he did great, but I’m playing catch up a little bit. And so we’re gonna cover an extra chapter this week and next week. But the high level strategy is that come Easter because all your neighborhood in your networks, your friends, your family, they’re gonna get invited by you to come to church. And they’re likely to come around Easter season usually. Um, come Easter, we will be concluding this before Easter. Samuel will be starting a new Siri’s first Peter following Easter. And I love first Peter. I’ve preached that before. Other times it’s been excellent. And so we’re excited about Easter. Excited about today, Excited about everything. We’re looking at what God has been doing. Um, but just I’m gonna play a little catch up this week and next week, and that will be fine. So let’s pray, Val, your heads. Shut your eyes. Let’s pray. God, thank you for today. Thank you for what we’re looking at. In your word. I thank you for your word is powerful asset people would hear from you and your your scripture. I set your spirit convict hearts I set your word would instruct hearts pray to kick people in the But I need a butt kicking approach. You encourage and support people that need encouragement that need a hug from you, Lord Heavenly encouragement. Lord, I ask that you just really give us what we need. Three a word today I pray people would hear from you and your scripture in the book of First Samuel, we just love you and commit today to you in Jesus name. Amen. Okay. So when you when you preach, there’s There’s parts of the Bible. You you gotta preach in parts of the Bible you wanna preach and there’s preference preaching. And I’m a rehabilitated preference preacher who who, uh, check the wrong thing there. I’m a rehabilitated preference preacher who doesn’t always prefer to preach certain sections of the Bible. There’s parts I prefer, but today is lucky for me. Ah, part of the Bible I do enjoy was looking at. I do enjoy this subject we’re looking at today. We’re looking at transitions, um, transitioning of leadership. There’s usually stereotypically at a church. When you talk about it, this kind of theme of a sermon, it’s because someone’s getting fired. Someone’s taking a job somewhere else. Someone’s going out on church, plant someone’s feel called emissions or something. And then we’re breaking some very unfortunate or fortunate news to you guys because one of us pastors is leaving or something that’s stereotypically when people covered this topic of transition plan, succession planning and all that stuff, to my knowledge, into the first service fasters knowledge. We don’t know if anything big that’s happening like that in our church, but it’s okay to preemptively preach through a passage that is usually steeped with excitement. Um, if that’s okay, so first annual 89 10, 11. We’re covering a lot today. The nation of Israel is transitioning from, uh, theocracy to a monarchy king leading a kingdom. The Nation of Israel is looking around at all the other nations around them, the Philippines, Emirates, and they They want to be like the other nations around them. And they approach Samuel and they and they lay out, lay…

  • God is not a Tesseract
Okay. Well, good morning. Welcome to show our church. My name is Ben Lin and, er, privileged to be one of the pastors here. Like to welcome those of you who are online as well. Thanks for checking us out or participating in the service here today. Um, just so you all know just a heads up. We’re gonna be going through First Samuel, Chapter four through chapter seven today. So you’re gonna need to grab your bible or grab your phone app because there’s there’s so many verses we can’t get him on the screen on. And I don’t know about you, but I I love digging into four verses when I teach. And so four chapters is, ah, a little bit of a challenge for me, but it’s great. It’s good to have the opportunity to go through more of a narrative. The story aunt to teach from the Bible through the narrative. Uh, because a lot of times we used to, you know, the New Testament. There’s a few verses were pulling apart, disseminating truth, all that kind of stuff. So it’s good. It’s good for me on I think it’ll be good for all of us. but get your Bibles ready and turn to First Samuel. Chapter four. We’re gonna go through four through seven, and next week again, it’ll be another bigger chunk. So we’ll be bringing your Bibles, uh, to church. If you’re at home, grab your Bible and get ready for for this passage. I don’t know if you’ve seen any of the Marvel movies, the Avenger movies, but there’s a There’s this thing in there that’s called a tesseract, and what it is is it’s this object of power, this cube of power, and it holds these things called the six or stones or whatever. I don’t even know, but it’s. But it’s this thing where it’s like if you have it, you have this unlimited source of power. And so there’s these fights and battles to try to get this Tesseract, and whereas the Tesseract and they’ve got the power because they’ve got this, this thing, this object okay, and in this story that we’re going through, it’s called the Ark Narrative. That’s a common name for this section of first Samuel. What had happened? Waas is really gotten to a point in their history where they really didn’t know God personally anymore. They had had a number of years go by from when they were called out of Egypt. And they had that, You know, all those things that God did for them. They knew the stories of old. They knew what God had done to the Egyptians and the others. And so they had heard those stories. And they had this arc of the covenant’s in the midst of their camp and the ark. Just a little bit about the Ark. The ark is when it was formed and crafted. God gave them instructions to essentially re create to create a copy off the throne of God that exist today. Right now, this very moment that exists today in heaven. So there’s this ark and there’s these chair, Um um and this seat and it’s the throne of God. And so he had them create this and put it in the temp, the Tabernacle. And then when God’s presence would come down, he would sit on this throne. And, you know, the cloud would cover the tent of meeting by day, the pillar of fire by night. This is this is God being on the throne. But there’s this arc. Okay. And what had happened was they basically got to the point where they were treating the arc as a tesseract, as a talisman, as an object to power as an idol, just like the other nations around them had these gods that were made out of wood and, you know, and stone a law and silver and golden all this stuff, the Israel lights have gotten to the point where they were viewing this ark of the covenant as their object of power. Um And so that’s kind of where this this story is at, um just to remind you again, um, about about where we’re at, um, in Samuel here, there’s the it’s to these judges and there’s a transition going on. But Israel had gotten to this point w…

  • Jesus is Everything
it is good to be with you today. I I’m gonna be teaching today from Second Corinthians 5, 14 and 15. So if you have a Bible turn there, we’re gonna read that in just a minute. Um, yeah. So most important things you need to know about me is, uh, I’m married. Um, my wife, Debbie. She’s, um, can’t be with us today. We live in Papillion, Nebraska. Um, she is remarkable. We have five kids, and they are mostly amazing. Um, they’re, like, 1 to 13. And so it just depends on the day. Probably like me on dso Um it’s really good to be with you this morning. Um and so if you would stand with me, this is kind of my tradition. Um stand with me and reverence of God’s word. As I read it this morning, eso were again second, Corinthians 5, 14 and 15 reads for the love of Christ controls us because we have concluded this that one has died for all. Therefore, all have died and he died For all that, those who live might no longer live for themselves, but for him who for their sake died and was raised. Father would you Would you teach us this morning from your word Lord, we believe your word is true. Um, that lord, your your word forms us into your image. And so, Lord, would you today, um, dive us deeper into that who you would have us to be. And, Lord bless this time, Lord, use me in any way you see fit. I ask in Jesus name. Amen. I mean, you may be seated. So, um, as we as we look at this passage this morning, maybe do a little bit of context into the passage that we’re dealing with eso Here’s some rules of engagement with me. Um, I know that, um, if you’re at home, you can do this to just It’ll be weird because they’ll be doing it to the TV. But, um, I love for people just to give me a little bit feedback when I’m preaching, so you can say amen. You could say right on. You could say I could get down with that. You can say Shut up. You can say whatever you wanted you like, just a little bit if you’re falling with me. All right. So, um so So as we think about this text. Maybe just quick. Do a big overview of where we find this text in the whole of Scripture. And so if you go all the way back to the Old Testament at the very beginning on this is sort of my argument that Jesus is everything and Jesus is the true and full threat of all of Scripture. Um And so when you look at the Book of Genesis, what happens is that God made us, created us in his very image and making us in his very image. He created us in such a way that we lived at peace. Adam and Eve lived at peace with God. And this was like perfect piece, right? Like the kind of peace that you don’t wake up in the morning and wonder what you look like And what people are going to think about you kind of piece, right? Like there’s no, there’s no, there’s no discord. There’s no harmony with you or with others. Adam and Eve rebelled against God, and in their rebellion against God, sin entered into this world. And when sin entered into this world, what happened to separation became between God, man but instantly. God says like humanity. I love you and I’m going to send one to pay the penalty for your sin. He says that I’m going to crush the serpent’s head, right? He’s gonna crush The serpent’s said that his heel would be bruised, that he would crush the serpent’s head. And what I argue is that all throughout the rest of the Old Testament, what we’re going to see is the Brokenness of humanity and the promised healthy anticipation that there is one coming who is going to take away the sins of the world. And it’s kind of like a drumbeat all through the book, right? It’s a drumbeat all the way through the Old Testament that there’s one coming now, the Brokenness we see. And it’s pretty profound. Reno Brothers Killing Brothers, parents favoring a child over another child, causing nations to split and prett…

  • Attributes of a Godly Leader
All right. Good morning. It’s good to see you. Good to be with you if you’re joining us online. Thanks for joining us. Also today. We’re gonna continue with our Siris on first Samuel. And like Cindy said, we do have workbooks out in the lobby. Their $5 you can throw five bucks and the tide box. We have a ton of these. We would really like, you know, have them. They’re great to use for notes, uh, discussing in your community group if you don’t have five bucks. Still take one. No one will know anyways, but we want you to have one. They are a good resource. So, uh, today we’re actually gonna be on part three? Yep. We’re skipping part to Ben’s gonna pick that up next week because it goes great with what he is going to be speaking to us about. So we are on part three in your workbook, which is first Samuel, Chapter three in your Bibles. So if you turn there with us this’ll morning. So even before we get started, the titles called Searching for a Leader. And so what? I want to give us some backdrop here where we kind of have to different plotlines going. We have two different, um, veins here. That one is Samuel Samuel. Eli. The other one is the nation Israel. Right. So, Samuel, we see from last week his mom, Hannah, was unable to have kids, and so she lived in this world of sorrow and despair. She was she was, uh, really tormented by this even by the second wife that her husband took, who was able to have kids and really tormented her and rubbed that in her face. And then, to say the least, her husband was insensitive. That’s probably a pretty nice way to put it in the way that he responded there. But Hannah he was this faithful woman, and she and she went to God and she just pleaded to God for a child. And she said, Lord, if you give me a if you give me this son, I’ll give him back to you all the days of his life and what happens that happens. God gives her a son, and early on she gives him back to the Lord to serve in the temple all the days of his life under the high priest Eli Now, the other story line that we have going on is Israel. Israel at this time is really in a dark spiritual state, both physically and spiritually, right there, really living in darkness on. We’ll see that they just kept going through this cycle right there, just in the cyclical pattern where they would sin, they would be taken into captivity right under bondage. And then eventually they would repent and they would be restored, and then they’d sin, and then they would go into bondage. Then it’s a cycle over and over and over again. And what would happen is during that cycle, right, they would they would turn to other gods, idolatry, polytheistic beliefs they would bring in these other gods. And clearly the Lord God had forbidden that well, there would be repercussions to that, and they would be taken over by our oppressors. And then God would raise up these judges, these leaders. So if you look at the Book of Samuel 1st and 2nd Samuel right before that is the book of judges in the book of Judges really goes through these leaders that continue to get raised up in the whole cycle, where they would sin. They’d go into bondage and then raise up these leaders, these judges, and then they would repent over and over again, the whole book really being about that. And now we come to first Samuel, where Eli And now Samuel Samuel is the final judge. So he’s the transition here, the final judge between the Book of Kings right, which which, which is right after second Samuel. So this is the transition from judges to a monarch. They’re gonna have kings from here on out. And then you see the story of the Kings. But they’re in a dark place right now, and God raises up Samuel. So on a high level, we can step back. And we look at this cyclical nature and there’s a lot of thin…

Amen. Good morning, Happy New Year. Merry Christmas. Good to see you all today. We’re excited about this new Siri’s looking for a leader. First Samuel, it’s It’s one of those unique times in the nation visuals history where they’re moving on between transitioning between the wild, Wild West judges season of their leadership structure to the first monarch. There’s a lot of fun wild stories in this in this book, so I’m looking forward to that before that. Welcome again in person. Welcome online. Thank you for joining us. It’s been very encouraging. And it feels like the wild wild west of the first book of Samuel. The time of judges like the Internet so wild and will be place. And it’s been some amazing how some amazing stories have come out of our livestream. There’s live people in our live stream and there and God’s. Using this church is small efforts of communicating the gospel in the Bible and some amazing ways, and it z always. It’s kind of ironic and weird and new and exciting, but I’ll meet some of the lobby at the first or second service, and in my mind, I mean them for the first time in their mind, they’ve been watching and following along for a great deal of time. And so it’s been a blessing. It’s been amazing how God is using technology like he always has to reach people. So thank you for joining us online. Thank you for coming in person. I’m excited about this subject this morning. Let me pray before we jump into it. Is that okay? God, I just bow your heads with me. Let’s pray. God, I thank you for the word of God. I pray that your word would instruct the people who’ve got, uh, combined. If the spirit of God you encourage us, you convict us, you challenge us. Lord, I ask that you would just use your word in a powerful way like you always dio I prayed people would hear from you. Take Bob. I don’t care if they hear from me. I prayed they would hear from you and your word this morning. Convict Encourage challenge. Correct. Lord, use your word the way you dio in the people’s lives. Jesus name. We pray this. Amen. Alright, so back story first Samuel, Um it is ah transition period for the people of God the nation of Israel. It starts off with, ah, unique birth story of Of Samuel, his back story of how he came about the story of his his mother’s faith. Hannah. We follow that narrative of Samuel to Elijah to solve to King David all those kings that you probably knew about and heard about in ST school you probably didn’t know about and hear about the story we’re going to cover today. Two weeks from now, there’s some unique fun. Stories will be coming, but it’s a different style of writing. It’s not gospel writing accounts. It’s not short epistle letter accounts from Leader to leader of churches, its’s narrative writing, its narrative historical preaching. So there’s a variety of stuff, and I will summarize, and we’ll improve our summary ization skills as pastors. But we’re going to summarize the chapter to you a supposed to reading two chapters to start our sermon, and then I’ll go back and I’ll cherry pick and highlight and pull forward lessons that have stood out in my preparation for this passage. So I am. I’m excited. So searching for a leader, um, it seems like the number one indicating factor of what we can or can’t do as a church is that ratio of leadership, how many leaders we have, a leaders capacity, their availability, the leadership pipeline we have or don’t have for certain ministry or certain work? It seems like the biggest pain point for what we can or can’t dio is the capacity we have of available leadership. And I’m excited about what God is doing when the leadership team of our church, how God’s and raising up a variety of young men and women who love the Lord and God is leading them individually as individuals.…
