Perinatal loss is the loss of a baby during pregnancy or delivery. It is a common experience, with as many as 10 to 15% of pregnancies ending in loss. Families who suffer a perinatal loss may experience a range of grief reactions, including shock, anger, and depression. Remaining connected with your support system, finding ways to honor the deceased child, and speaking with a professional can help you cope with a pregnancy loss.

Simon Ndaula is a trained Clinical Psychologist with experience working in trauma management. Listen in as he shares how his past experience has transformed to offering support to bereaved parents and couples dealing with infertility. He shades light on the impact culture and religion has on dealing grief, especially when dealing with perinatal loss. 

 Perinatal Bereavement Care is the experience of parents that begins immediately following the loss of an infant through death by miscarriage, stillbirth, neonatal loss, or elective termination for fetal anomalies. It is characterized by a complex emotional response, most commonly manifested as grief in both the mother and father, but often expressed differently between males and females, both in intensity and duration” (Fenstermacher and Hupcey 2013 p. 2394).

 In this episode, I am joined by my dearest Sister, Dora O. She has been and continues to be my beacon of hope. During this journey of grief & Loss, she stood firm beside me, making decisions on my behalf since she gathered that i wasn't in the right state of mind.

In this episode, she shares how she helped me cope with grief and mourn, honor both James and Keitangaza's memories.  I can't stress enough the importance of having a kind caregiver on this journey. To say that I was not functioning would be understatement, so having someone who knew what i liked or disliked and who to let into my space and not to let into my space is vital to one's healing process.

Join Denise Kekimuri aka Kecho, the host of this podcast shares her who, what, where, why, when and how of this show. She started this podcast after publishing a book under the same title, So, What Next?  It details her healing journey after experiencing two neonatal deaths, she experienced a lot of "silence" around her, she decided to turn her journals into a book.  Thus, birthing a charity organization called Vessel Is Me Project. They offer psychosocial support to women and couples dealing with pregnancy loss and baby loss in Uganda &  Africa at large.
