  • Building a Guitar Speaker Power Reduction Box

My vast collection of rheostats (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-66e-kxP4iM) will finally come in handy! Using a low-ohm one to make a power attenuator box, which is plugged in between a guitar amp and a cabinet, so that you can crank the amp up all the way to "The Spinal Tap" 11 (if it supports this!) and get that nice overdriven sound while not pumping all those decibels into your neighbors' ears. The design balances the power between the speaker and dummy load, letting more or less steam off.

  • Keritech Stream - USA Tech Appreciation Edition

Living in a post-communist country in central Europe, we don't get that much American tech here - and with USD/EUR to PLN exchange rates, getting Western tech internationally is expensive. I'm mainly limited to getting secondhand (or thirdhand) things from online auctions and classifieds, or old gear clearances. That's why I don't have too much real deal American stuff, but appreciate what I've got - from a Zippo lighter to a Tektronix scope. It's show, tell and teardown time again at Keritech. You Ass Ay!

  • Questionable Ethics: Reverse-Engineering a Skinner Box Shock Generator

Long time, no see - it's been a while... Hard to make videos when caught up in the daily grind and life's problems.

An ethically questionable device here is the IBD (Institute of Experimental Biology) TGS-1 electromechanical shock generator. It's an artifact of behavioral science used with the infamous Skinner box, and it applied AC current to an electrified floor of the box, delivering an electric shock to the animal inside, used for negative reinforcement in operational conditioning experiments. The device has controls for shock duration and intensity (current) and features a motorized distribution switch identical to the one I used in my Electro-Mechanix art installation (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvpzoxPvWHw) and very similar to what @FranLab once got from her local university, leading me to suspect that hers was also used in a similar setup.

I got three or four of these shock generators from my friend from medical university, together with lots of other scientific and medical tech. After disassembling one of them, I decided to restore another one to a working order, get a grip on the controls, reverse-engineer the thing and make a video of it. The rest is in the Vault for the time being.

No living creature, neither me nor Mr Rattman the lab assistant, was shocked through making this video. I'm not @ElectroBOOM, LOL.

@CuriousMarc briefly featured a DEC PDP computer controlled experimental setup for Skinner boxes in https://youtu.be/PcNekvIxjTo?t=507 - the orchestration system used with my generator was probably a lot simpler.

    0:00 Intro

    1:42 Front Panel Controls
    3:40 Looks Familiar
    4:35 Manual and Auto Control
    6:44 Give'em A Jolt!
    7:10 Mr Rattmann?
    8:50 Indefinite Shock
    11:00 Auto/Manual Control
    12:45 Post-Shock Pulse
15:37 The Inner Life of the Shock Generator
    17:40 Back Panel Connectors
    18:24 PCBs
    22:12 Distribution Switch
25:00 The Skinner Box Experimental Setup
    28:40 Shock Generator Block Diagram
    34:30 Timer Circuit Schematic
    37:15 Rag Chewing

Also showing some new stuff and improvements to the lab and filming setup in the further part of the video, if you're interested. It's more of a sneak peek, not a fully fledged "Keri's Studio Behind the Scenes" kind of video. Not talking your ears off about NDI here... yet.

    39:30 OK, Zoomer...

    40:35 Test Gear Cam
    42:12 C930e Temporary Mobile Cam
44:00 New Things In The Lab
    44:30 Synths Fixed
    47:30 Bye!

Now I noticed that the C930e loses its white balance when my hand is in view, and the Kiyo Pro tries to focus but often can't - just like me! ADHD shenanigans, haha.

  • Inside the ZOPAN PFL-22 Frequency Counter... and what Keri found there

It's been a while... and it's new gear at Keritech time - with Nixies! This ZOPAN PFL-22 frequency counter / timer is of 1982 vintage, uses eight Z573M tubes as display devices, and all kinds of other indicators: neon lamps, incandescent bulbs and a LED. Yes, that's right: there's a single LED in a whole device. All its logic is based on TTL gates and counters, some of them higher speed (74Sxx series) and it normally goes up to 100MHz, which I'd like to upgrade to be able to use it for checking local oscillators in FM radios.

I decided to go full-on @atkelar on this frequency counter, taking it apart, cleaning the front and back, all the controls and parts... Total discombobulation - and later on, recombobulation! Maybe IC upgrade too, if I get 74Fxx fast gates. Shoving a few nanoseconds off propagation time might do the trick extending the max frequency, but I'll only try it after I get the counter working again.

Some weird A/V desync happened on the main scene, it seems - still, no critical footage lost.
