  • Inside the Lell PSR Drum Synthesizer, Part 1

A returning customer of mine found a vintage Soviet drum machine and asked me if I was willing to recombobulate it. I took the challenge... and this is the first part of a little series of insights on this interesting device. It's a microprocessor system with RAM, ROM, VFD, keyboard, DACs, whatnot... Given the political & economic situation, it's interesting to go through it. It's pretty typical Soviet electronic engineering with all the ICs using Soviet rather than Western markings, so I had to do some research to find the equivalents and determine their purpose.

A lot of work has been done off the camera, and it was a great learning opportunity too. Who would have expected that I'd not only have to program EEPROMs, but also deal with programming voltage level mismatch and make a level shifter to get it to program at all? That's engineering, that's what I do for a living... Sorta.

  • Fixing a Retekess TR110 Multiband Receiver

This portable receiver is a true multitool among handheld radios! Versatile and universal, not a bad start into shortwave listening. The problem is, it's not exactly a brick outhouse, it could be better built to make it more reliable.

I had two of those in for repair - this one with a damaged tuning button; the other one with a display issue. Both are fixed now.

A bunch of youtubers made videos on this model, including @IMSAIGuy with a thorough walkthrough here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xs6_ZG1nXqQ

  • Chassis Punches for Tube Sockets

A glimpse at Keri's tools! This video had some technical problems and I had to remake the outro, and skip the intro altogether (it's the Rise of the Machines...), but I got to the point. Demonstrating different hole punches and testing two of them on 1.5mm thick aluminum, steel and stainless steel. Which one is the easiest? You probably know the answer.

This video was inspired by @SkunkieDesignsElectronics who made numerous chassis fabrication videos where she used chassis punches; that's why I bought mine a few months ago and they come in handy every time I build an amp.

  • Inside the Lell PSR Drum Synthesizer, Part 2 - A Deeeeeeeep Dive!

Going through the ins and outs of the Lell PSR rhythm synthesizer a.k.a. drum machine made in the last months of the USSR. After a few days of frustrating work figuring out what was wrong, I got it back up and running. Oh my goodness, this was an awesome relief! You think it's gonna be a babysitting job... nothing farther from truth.

Sharing some insights I gained from reading the info (http://www.dubrovenko.ru/ddssite/dshlelsw.htm, https://ruskeys.forum24.ru/?1-0-0-00000041-000-0-0-1344017700 and https://www.dtech.lv/techarticles_lel_psr.html) and my own reverse-engineering work. Also featuring two little mods I did on the unit.

I may be making another video on Soviet chip markings because they're pretty confusing at first but logical if you know how they're constructed.

  • Sopot Vintage Computer Fair, 2024-05-18

Almost nothing to write home about, and I went out empty-handed. Still, had some nice time. Killed a bunch of nazis in Wolfenstein 3D as if it was early 1990s... Nostalgia intensifies.

There was a bunch of people selling mainly consoles and games (Famicon, NES, N64 and modern stuff), 8-bit computers (C64, Atari), old PCs, cathode ray tube TVs, software, books, magazines, vinyl records and cassettes, some books, toys (for the nice kids rather than naughty adults), figurines, other nerdy stuff. Calculators, some devices from way back when, but no real hi-fi or anything similar... nothing to give me a total nerdout.

Hoped to buy some fun tee or electronic stuff - came out empty-handed. Met a friend nerd (the same who I fixed the ZX Spectrum +2 for) and we talked a bit. I even tried buying standard 2HD 1.44 floppies for an upcoming Thinkpad 380ED restoration project - nowhere to be found... Now I feel pretty sad and disappointed since I really enjoyed the previous fair in October.

  • Fixing an OKI MB260 Printer? (April Fools 2024 Special)

    Again... in my first lab!

Keritech Electronics is moving its base of operations indefinitely. This is a first video from the new but very familiar location, done with limited resources as far as lighting, sound, recording, post-production and tools go. No test gear and no professional workbench like the one I had up there in Gdańsk... and no cat either. We all have our setbacks.

  • Making a New C64 Power Supply, Part 1

Project time! Building (or re-building) a modern Commodore 64 power supply with a switch-mode buck converter module, more reliable than the original, with no risk of sending +12V to the C64 5V bus. I'm doing it the hard-ish way, reusing the original enclosure and cables to preserve the look and feel. The new transformer is potted in silicone and in case of anything, easier to remove than the original epoxy resin potted power supply.

  • Keri's Baby Steps with... Commodore 64!

Firing up the Commodore 64C I borrowed from my friend, and punching the code from my @FranLab T-shirt in. A good opportunity to explain what these lines do... because people kept asking Fran about it all the time, and like she said, it's pretty self-explanatory. JFGI, people...

To me, having had my first steps with computers in the '90s using an IBM PC XT (later AT), it's all pretty alien but I'm learning. On my way to code something that'll display a big "Hellorld!" on the screen as a tribute to @UsagiElectric

Keritech lab gremlins were at it again, breaking audio feed in two scenes, so making this video took some editing and the sequence of events might seem illogical.

Sharing my big bench upgrade project. I had two days of work on it, adding an installation channel with sockets and all those custom modules, and an electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection mat which also helps against losing those pesky little buggers when I do some SMD work. It's pretty good at withstanding high temperatures, I can touch it with my soldering iron's tip and it won't burn or melt.

The Commodore belongs to one of my friends in the local retro computing community, the same who had me fix and mod his ZX Spectrum +2 issue 3 here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LmriYKS9FiQ and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXwEaCsloms - check those videos out if you're interested in that particular model, I'm taking a deep dive there.
