About the guest speaker:

Rose Croshier is a non-resident fellow at the Center for Global Development and an international relations specialist within the Office of Space Commerce (OSC), US Department of Commerce, in Washington, DC. In her work with CGD, Rose focuses on enabling low- and middle-income countries’ adoption of space-based technology. Before joining CGD and the OSC, Croshier was an accomplished program and operations manager with the US Air Force, specializing in areas such as Space Operations, Security Cooperation and Development, Peacekeeping, Disaster Management, and Military Intelligence.  

Croshier has held various positions in the intersection between security, diplomacy, and development, serving as a staff officer in the US Task Force in Djibouti, as a “blue helmet” in the UN mission to the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO), as the Chief of US Security Cooperation for Ghana, Togo, and Benin, and as the US Liaison to the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre in Ghana. Highlights include working with ECOWAS and West African countries to counter Ebola, armed groups, and maritime insecurity in the Gulf of Guinea. Concerning space and technology innovation, Croshier held leadership positions at the National Air and Space Intelligence Center and Air Force Materiel Command, where she contributed to the development of new US systems and capabilities. Lastly, Croshier greatly values her early career, and hands-on experience as a space operator at the U.S. Combined Space Operations Center in California, tracking the ever-growing global constellation of man-made satellites and space debris. 

The opinions expressed in Croshier’s CGD publications and engagements are her own and do not reflect the view of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the US Department of Commerce, or the United States government. Croshier received a Master’s in Diplomacy and International Commerce from Norwich University, Northfield, Vermont.

She holds a Ph.D. in Intelligence and National Security („Carol I” National Defense University, Bucharest, Romania), a Ph.D. in Near and Middle Eastern Studies (Humanities Faculty, Basel University, Switzerland), an M.A. degree in Political Sciences, Security and Diplomacy specialization (National University of Political Studies and Public Administration / NUPSPA, Bucharest, Romania)., and various certifications in propaganda, terrorism, social media, nuclear terrorist threats, etc.

Yehor Brailian is an international journalist with a scholarly background in modern and contemporary world history, colonialism, and British history specialization.

Yehor graduated from the Faculty of History, Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University (2014), where he defended a thesis on the colonial and postcolonial policy of Great Britain in the Caribbean (1930s to 1983) in 2021. He studied under the Erasmus + academic exchange program at the University of Constance (2016-2017).

He is a winner of the Bohdan Solchanyk Travel Grant and a participant in a workshop on global history in Oxford (2018). Yehor was the editor of the Toynbee Prize Foundation blog (2018-2020). Yehor has publications on world politics in a number of media, including Ukrinform, European pravda, lb.ua, Detector.media, 24 channel, Kyiv Post, and The Institute of War and Peace Reporting.

Since October 2021, Yehor covers the international defense and security cooperation of Ukraine as a special correspondent of the Information Agency of Ukrainian MoD, ArmyInform.

In this episode, we take a deeper look at Japan's new defense strategy, the country's role in Indo-Pacific security, as well as its rising importance in the international security domain with Dr. Satoru Nagao.

Dr. Satoru Nagao is a fellow (non-resident) at Hudson Institute, based in Tokyo, Japan. From December 2017 through November 2020, he was a visiting fellow at Hudson Institute, based in Washington, DC.

Dr. Nagao's primary research area is US-Japan-India security cooperation. He was awarded his PhD by Gakushuin University in 2011 for his thesis, "India's Military Strategy," the first such research thesis on this topic in Japan. Gakushuin University is a premier institution from which members of the Japanese Imperial Family have also graduated.

Dr. Nagao holds numerous other research positions, including director at the International Security Industry Council, senior research fellow at the Japan Forum for Strategic Studies, specially-appointed research fellow at the Japan Forum on International Relations, research fellow at the Institute for Future Engineering (strategy, defense policy), lecturer at Gakushuin University, an associate at the Society of Security and Diplomatic Policy Studies, research fellow at the Security and Strategy Research Institute for Japan, senior fellow at the Institute of National Security Studies Sri Lanka, senior research fellow of the Indian Military Review, and visiting fellow (Indo-Pacific) and honorary convenor at the Japan of Tillotoma Foundation in India.

Dr. Nagao was a visiting scholar at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), in Washington DC. He worked previously as a research fellow at the Tokyo Foundation and the Ocean Policy Research Foundation in Tokyo, as a post-doctoral fellow at the Research Institute for Oriental Cultures at Gakushuin University, and as a lecturer at Gakushuin University, Aoyama-Gakuin University and Komazawa University. He was also a security analyst at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) and a first lieutenant of the Japan Ground Self Defense Forces (Japanese Army).

Dr. Nagao has authored numerous books and articles on security issues, and he also contributes to the column, "Age of Japan-India 'Alliance'" at Nikkei Business, the journal of one of Japan’s leading newspapers. He can be reached on: Hudson Institute and LinkedIn.
