He is the author of five books including The Fourth World War, co-authored with the Count de Marenches, long-time head of French intelligence. A Shattered Peace: Versailles 1919 and the Price We Pay Today was published with a foreword by Sir Harold Evans. He has translated from the French An Impossible Dream: Reagan, Gorbachev, and a World Without the Bomb. He is a graduate of Harvard University and Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, and a member of the Century Association, Council on Foreign Relations, Harvard Club of New York, National Press Club; president-emeritus of the Overseas Press Club of America and The Silurians.

He is a Senior Fellow at Observer Research Foundation (ORF) Mumbai. His work focuses on the intersection of technology and national security, including cybersecurity. Dr. Patil is the author of Securing India in the Cyber Era (Routledge, 2022) and has co-edited Moving Forward EU-India Relations: The Significance of the Security Dialogues (Edizioni Nuova Cultura, 2017). He has a Ph.D. and MPhil in international politics from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Dr. Patil has participated in several Track 1 and Track 1.5 dialogues, including India-US and India-UK Strategic Intelligence Dialogues, after the 2008 Mumbai attacks and India-UK Track 1.5 Cyber Dialogues. In 2019, he received the prestigious Canberra Fellowship, awarded by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Australia. In his military career, Colonel Thiele commanded troops developed concepts and capability requirements in the German Ministry of Defence; drafted policy papers and speeches for Federal Presidents, Ministers of Defence, Major NATO Commanders, and Service Chiefs. As Commander Bundeswehr Transformation Command Thiele shaped the Bundeswehr's path toward network-enabled capabilities.

In his honorary and business functions, Thiele advises governments and industry on Defence Innovation and Disruptive Technologies in times of digital transformation. He has directed and contributed to numerous European Defence and Security Studies. Cooperation partners include CSIS, Washing- ton; Hybrid Centre of Excellence, Helsinki; Keio University, Tokyo; National Defense University, Seoul; RAND, Washington. Thiele has chaired conferences and accepted speaking engagements on most continents. He has published widely, most recently the book “Hybrid Warfare.
